Crysis and DX10 (56k warn, but worth it)
« on: Thursday, May 24, 2007, 02:42:25 PM »
Lots of people have been wondering if Vista + DX10 card will be worth the money. Well the underworld store got me Vista Ultimate, though I intend to pay for the DX10 games. Here is what they will look like:

Some of that is just unbelievable.

Crysis:

Flight Simulator X DX10:

Alan Wake DX10

Might want to remove that Flight Sim X "screenshot", as its was just an artists concept, not a real screen.

Yeah I remember that one.

I think the Crysis character shots are on the official DirectX 10 site too. It looks pretty impressive.

I didn't know Idol. Some really sweet videos, comparing DX10 with DX9. Really worth checking!!!

I just saw the one titled, Crysis - DirectX 9 vs. DirectX 10 Hunter HD. Amazing.. I can't believe it. Check it out!

I don't know. From what I see on the video, they simply added more objects on the ground and a smoke effect thats been easily done on DX9 (example: Call of Duty 2 smoke bomb effect). They even added a lovely little build up on the DX10 version to spruce it up. It almost seems like DX9 is being displayed handicapped in order to promote DX10. I don't know, I'm sure DX10 can do a lot of things DX9 can't but I thought that was a bad example.

Yea that was a bad example Pyro, but I was actually more impressed by it overall. The Crysis engine looks sweet.

I just checked out Crysis - DirectX 9 vs. DirectX 10 Jungle Fight HD

There is a pretty major difference in lighting, but that's about it. The DX9 version looks pretty sweet as well. In the end it doesn't matter. All the new cards are DX10. And Nvidia has a line from low to high end, while ATi is about to do the same.

And dual booting Vista is easy. I am not going to go beyond my magic underworld copy though... M$ screwed me last time with 'too many activations'.

Ok, from all these screenies and whatnot I'm just about ready to take the plunge.  Can't afford the GTX or GTS just yet, but I am eyeballing the 8800 GTS KO from Evga.  Add to that their step up policy and I think we have a winner.

Funny thing is I don't even play games all that much.  Buh, I'm just greedy.

Jacks if you are into a 8800GTS look up the 2900XT. It will be the same price as the GTS, and with current drivers it is about the same. However in some cases it nears the GTX, though it never trails the GTS. I have a feeling in a few months it will be a fantastic buy... but you will have to put up with an ATi card.

Also if you are only buying for the purpose of DX10, then the 9800GTX from NVIDIA is coming in Sep-Nov. Just a thought.

Yea I'll probably sell my 8800 by then. Even if you aren't interested in the 9800GTX, the fact is that it will bring prices down. Still the 2900XT and the 8800GTS are very outstanding products, and at most will go down by $50.

Yeah, that's what I'm lookin' at -- to see how much it'll DROP the other card's prices -- like say the 8xxx series!!

So, w/ the GF 9800 coming, when's the GF 9600 coming?

The main issue I have with the 2900XT is its power consumption, at this point.  I'm still a little bit on the low end in that regards and I just don't wanna be arsed with replacing the PSU at this point in time.  My guy's clocking in at a staggering 430W, but it probably hits 350 or so max.

Yes the power consumption is insane. Plus it needs more pins and apparently produces more heat. Good call.

I hate when there are Reg. & Special Editions of games -- but, Special Edition get extra in-game content stuff. It's very freakin' annoying.

I think a Special Edition should give you extra stuff that doesn't add any content within the game. For example, I like Special Ed's contain this kinda stuff -- Making of the Game Disc, Copy of Old Games Within The Game Series (for example, Quake 4: Special Ed came w/ Quake 2 + both Q2 expansions), Game Soundtrack CD, Art Book, Figurine, etc etc. You know, that stuff is REALLY what makes a Special Ed of a game SPECIAL, to me.

Sounds like the worst CE ever. I think all publishers should seek guidance from Blizzard on CEs.

“Making of Crysis” featurette taking you inside the making of the epic game....boring.
A unique in-game vehicle*.... boring
“Meet the Developers” vignettes with the lead designers at Crytek... seriously... boring.
The initial Crysis concept video that started it all, along with key trailers... wow I really don't care enough to see that.
A show reel of original concept and production artwork from the team... again... no. While the game looks gorgeous technically, it doesn't seem to stand out in the art department.
32 page concept art book... that could be cool, but I am not sold on the art as of yet. I am not saying the art is bad, I am just saying it doesn't scream "WOW".
Official soundtrack of all original music by the award-winning composer Inon Zur (past video game credits include Baldur’s Gate II, Prince of Persia and Everquest II)... that I could be interested in.

Funny, I'm so the opposite of you.  Any background information, developer stuff... I love it.  Anything that gives me a glimpse into the industry.  Soundtrack could be cool, and I'll agree with you that the art stuff might not be super interesting just because the game seems fairly bland from an art creation standpoint, but to me any features that show the development process are great.  Though I think we can all agree that Blizzard CEs are bloody amazing.

Will Crysis be like HL2 upon release, able to run on ever much older PC's???

Looks like Crytek's Cevat Yerli claims Crysis will run on PC's that are even 4 years old.

Quote
Crysis Will Run on 4-Year Old PCs
Aug 28, 2007 at 5:22 PM - Robert "Apache" Howarth - 6 Comments
The blokes at Eurogamer interviewed Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli who is confident that Crysis will not only push today's latest hardware to its limits, but will scale well enough to play on a four-year old computer as well.

Eurogamer: There's a lot of hype about the visuals in Crysis. But what if you don't have Direct X10?

Cevat Yerli: As a PC game developer you have to make sure your game runs on two to three year old PCs. In fact, the current specification we're planning for is even four year old PCs.

If you're a gamer who bought a new gaming PC two or three years ago, you can play Crysis, and you will get visuals that will compete with visuals of that time. Of course you won't get the super Direct X10 graphics, but we are competitive.

We'll find out for sure on Sept. 25th.

I'm going to go as far as to say maybe these guys at Crytek are as genius about graphics technology as John Carmack is.  That's pretty incredible that their engine has this kind of scaling ability.

Interview on Crysis

Quote
SPOnG: How long will the single player campaign last and what will there be in terms of longevity play?

Alex Werner (of Crytek): The single player campaign runs, depending on your game style, at about 10 hours if you play it once through. If you want to see everything you could double that time easily. And if you play with stealth mainly it may take 15-20 hours, it’s really up to you! But minimum - about 10 hours.
Sounds like the usual length of shooter.

Quote
SPOnG: Will Crysis take advantage of Games for Windows Live?

Alex Werner: For Crysis we are supported by GameSpy for the multi-player matchmaking and other services. We do not support Windows Live for Crysis.
Ah, okay.

Quote
SPOnG: How involved is the mod toolset included in the game? Will players be able to set up absolutely anything within the level, or will there be limitations of some sort?

Alex Werner: We can’t promise you that, but it is likely that the editor will be shipped with the game and you will not only be able to change existing levels, but also create your own. You can create cut-scenes through to whole campaigns for both single-player and multi-player.
Cool.

Quote
SPOnG: Do you feel that Crysis is a one-off game, or that potentially a series could be made out of it like Far Cry?

Alex Werner: Nothing is decided yet, but we still have many ideas to spin the story further, far beyond Crysis (1)… (smiles). Crysis has always had a trilogy framework, so let's stay tuned for what the future will bring!

SPOnG: Thanks a lot for your time.
Seems like many games or movies are often planned to be trilogies, for some reason...

Crysis Demo Delayed [September 21, 2007, 9:30 pm ET] - 4 Comments
EA and Crytek announce that October 26 is the new release date for the single-player demo for Crysis, Crytek's upcoming first-person shooter, just scant days before the demo's planned release on September 25 (story). Here's word on the delay from Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli, who explains they didn't want to jeopardize the timely release of the full game on November 16 with their efforts at getting the demo out the door, but that the demo will include the game editor as a consolation prize:

    Hi everyone,

We have some news to announce.

First, I am sorry for the bad news - the Crysis single player demo will now be available everywhere on October 26th, 2007.

We are taking some extra time to make sure you that you have an amazing experience but also we did not want to risk the release date of Crysis at this stage. To get the game into your hands by November the 16th, we had to make this call.

Now the good news - the big surprise. The SP demo will be released with our CryEngine 2 - Sandbox 2 game editor, giving the community the opportunity to get familiar with the vast amount of tools they will have at their disposal four weeks before we ship, something we have always wanted to do.

This is an exciting time for us at the studio as the development of Crysis comes to an end and we are only a few weeks from Gold Master. We appreciate your patience and are looking forward to getting Crysis into your hands on November 16th.

I thought the requirements were stiff myself.
Namely, the 256 MB vid card requirement is pretty stiff, if you ask me.

Looks like Stranglehold and Crysis are gonna start a new wave of PC games w/ very-high requirements -- namely the very-high requirement being the video card.

I was putting off upgrading the vid card, but it looks like I might have to upgrade the vid card soon...

Crysis Demo FUBAR?
Oct 25, 2007 at 7:02 PM - Robert "Apache" Howarth - 30 Comments

As you might have read already, people who pre-ordered Crysis via EA's online store were supposed to be able to download and play the single player demo a day early (e.g. - today). There is one tiny problem though: the demo ain't working... The problem seems to be a broken authentication/decryption system.

News just in - those that have pre-ordered Crysis through EA are now able to download the demo. You should have an email notification about this! There are reports that this may be still encrypted and not available until a later time. The public release should be exactly 24 hours later after this release. inCrysis is in the process of pre-loading so expect download links the minute it's available to the public.

For those that have it, please do the decent thing and don't spread it. It's only hurting EA and Crytek. Do not ask, nor post any download/torrent links either.

    UPDATE
We have been receiving a number of mixed reports. Many are experiencing errors on launching, some saying they can't unencrypt it either. At this stage we don't have any additional information about these problems.

Here's the official and [one of the many] unofficial EA forums threads about the problems.

Yes a bit stiff, but at least they are being honest with the requirements.

256 is stiff though.

Very true, Puggy.

If more new games I want go like this very soon and all I seem to need to do is upgrade my vid card to meet the requirements, I'mma upgrade my vid card -- if I can get the card cheap enough to suit me, of course. ;)

EDIT:
New NVidia BETA Drivers released, Version 169.01 have been put out.
They're namely for the Crysis SP Demo.
Look here and follow instructions, if you want them...

Looks like some people have messed w/ Crysis SP Demo -- and found a way to basically "unlock" and "manipulate" the game's "Very High" settings that are (supposed to be) only available to Vista players, so that even XP users can use them; all in this thread here -- link here!

Play Crysis in DX 10 Mode Under XP

I saw this in the comments on our "Crysis Demo Impressions" post and I must say, it's a winner. If you follow the instructions in this post, you will be playing what looks exactly like a DirectX 10, "Very High" settings version of Crysis under XP. I have tried it and it does work. It makes everything look just as good as it does in DirectX 10 shots of Crysis released thus far. Only a matter of cut and pasting some lines of code in the \Crytek\Crysis SP Demo\Game\Config\CVarGroups directory.

As a reference, I tried this with an NVIDIA 8800GTS 320MB card.

So who exactly is Microsoft fooling? Why should we buy Vista? I certainly don't have the technical answers for you, but as a gamer, I can only shake my head in disbelief as to the stuff they are trying to sell us these days.

Thanks, un om bun.
