SAVE JERICHO!
« on: Wednesday, May 30, 2007, 10:46:50 PM »
There are news posts all over digg about this.  Apparently Jericho got canceled. People are pissed.  Almost Firefly pissed - the difference is firefly was fucking good, Jericho was shit.  *there are spoilers here*

I downloaded quite a few episodes of it because there was a torrent pack ofthe first 10 or so and I needed something to watch.  It seemed like a good concept and didn't start out too badly.  If it's possible to jump the shark in the third episode they did it (it might have been the second).  In case you haven't heard of it, here's the premise of the show:

Nukes go off all over the US, and one town must try to survive in a nation with no government.  Society has fallen apart, roads are cut off, and lawlessness reigns.

Sounds kind of cool right?  I figured the first episode or so was just weak because it was starting out, but then the shocker came.  The wind is pushing the fallout from Denver towards the town.  Shit...how do we avoid radiation poisoning?  I know, lets hide inside while it rains and then everything will be ok.  The second the last drop falls they walk back outside and everything is fine.

From that point on it was a car wreck.  Once you start looking, there is so much dumb shit in that show.  A bunch of survivors come into town from a downed plane.  They'd been walking there for ages.  How the fuck did they avoid the fallout rain?  Does it even matter?  No, because the show sucks, keep it cancelled.

Oh, yeah...but people are like "obviously there's a fan base...don't cancel it".  Look they're a business, they're canceling because they looked at it and it's losing them money.  It's not like with Firefly where it was scheduled all over the place, it was on prime time the same time every week. It doesn't matter how many people watched online...if they aren't making money off it they aren't going to show it. Shut your blog/vbloging faces...the show sucked and people didn't watch it.  It's over.

Now, bring Firefly back.

I think by the time they bring Firefly back the cast members will have crumpled skin.

Well speaking of Firefly, there has been an announcement that a special edition Serenity will be released in July.

By special edition do you mean sequel?

I haven't seen any of the episodes of Firefly, but I have seen about 1/4 of Serenity and thought it was pretty lame.

I hate movies that just seem like long TV shows.  Stupid crappy TV directors.

No I agree, Serenity was pretty disappointing.

Firefly is fantastic though Scottws. It had the potential to be one of the best shows ever, especially if you get past the first few episodes. The characters are fantastic and there is humor in everything. I loved that damn show.

I liked Serenity. I thought it fit well with the rest of the series, but I don't think that by itself makes it a good enough theatrical feature.

Jericho is horrible on the other hand.

I thought just the opposite to be honest.
As for Jericho, it was a good concept but when I was watching the 2nd episode I was wondering where they were taking this? Was it going to be like another Lost thing, or what. I've been watching it off and on and reading a few things, it would seem the writers have been dropping clues as to what's happening around the country - just small clues though. I think the big question is still who did it and it I think they've hinted at it being a big plot from within the US Govt... but like I said these are small clues to small to keep my interest really.

Haha I'm not saying I hated Firefly I just felt Serenity was a little better, and I think the reason for that is that everyone was more comfortable and had grown a into their characters little more etc.

Perhaps I'm misremembering some details, but I once saw one of those "gritty, realistic" wartime action movies in which the hero saves someone's life by making him an IV from a coconut and some rubber automotive tubing.

A fucking IV from a coconut and a rubber tube. I don't even know where he got the coconut, since the setting was the middle of Afghanistan or something.

I just saw the first episode of Jericho last night. They had another one of those "gritty, realistic" scenes. A little girl is choking to death - her neck has swollen for some reason, putting too much pressure on her trachea - so the protagonist has to do an emergency tracheotomy with a pocket knife (which he wipes off with his hand), some band-aids, and a whole lotta plastic drinking straws from juice boxes.

I'm sure as Hell not a paramedic or emergency doctor, but I think he'd have been better off fixing the source of the swelling.

Or maybe just intubating her trachea by sticking some rubber automotive tubing down her throat. Fuck, that's easier, safer, more reliable, and way more sanitary.

Edit: an Epi-Pen might have worked, too, depending entirely on what was causing the swelling.

New rule: From now on, only Scrubs is allowed to use tracheotomies in their scripts. It's obvious all those other losers don't know how to work one into a plot.

Really? I kind of agreed with Sirean, to be totally honest. The series was much better done than the movie, mostly because the movie used a lot of Hollywood clichés. (Most especially: they took River, the rebellion, the reavers, and several other plot elements, combined them into a single gigantic conspiracy, and then resolved the conspiracy.)

River from Firefly, or the little girl from Jericho? Because River from Firefly will kill you for that. She'll kill you for less than that. Heck, maybe she'll just kill you.

Anyway, I made it up to episode three of Jericho before hurling my TV out of a third story window. It's fucking amazing, the way they think nuclear fallout works. Why do people that fucking stupid try to write about nuclear war?

What's especially hilarious about all this is that the Screenwriters' Guild recommends $13000 as the going price for the screenplay for a one-hour drama, whereas a technically competent ghostwriter will review scripts for $20/page (well under a quarter the price).

I wanted to clarify what I said earlier about Serenity.  It didn't outright suck.  I just was very obviously a movie that jumped from TV to full-length movie and was directed by the the same people that did the TV show.

I'm not a film major or a major critic, so I can't really describe in explicit terms the difference between TV directing methods and usual full-length film directing methods, but Serenity just seemed like an extra-long episode of some show.  I don't like that.  It just seems... crappy.

Well if they do bring this show back for another year they'd better get some decent writers. If the show is good enough to get this kind of response but yet bad enough in the ratings to be canceled.... maybe they need to retool it a little so it more appealing.

I just read that.  It actually kind of pisses me off.  The show fucking sucks in every way possible.  It's simplistic, has horrible acting, shitty writers, all the subplots are just stupid (a guy's leaving his wife....who the fuck cares?  Like 200,000 people just died yesterday and nuclear fallout is going to kill the rest of you eventually), and the characters are all horribly one dimensional.  There are no redeeming qualities at all.  None.  The only one I can even think of is that people must like the whole post-apocalyptic feel....go read The Stand or something like that.  Seriously, it's possibly the stupidest show I've ever seen.

And fucking Arrested Development, Deadwood, Carnivale, and Rome all got canned.  Backlash?  Minimal.

Yeah, you're right.  I guess cancelled wouldn't be the right word since it's more of a case of a third season never being ordered.  Initially, it was only going to be one season and end after the assasination of Caeser on the Ides of March.  A second season was ordered after the broadcast of the first one or two episodes I believe.

I've read that the third season was never ordered due to the high cost of production, but now that you bring it up, I don't know how true that is.  Either they condensed the intended plot lines for the second and third seasons into one season (perhaps with the second dealing with the formation of the Second Triumvirate and the third dealing with the breakup of the triumvirate and the rise to power of the first Emporer) or they could have jumped ahead 200 or so years before the third season because Pax Romana does not make for good television.

That aside, I still feel that this is just fucking stupid.

Personally, the best part of the show was how they tied Vorenus and Pluto into all the major events over the years.

I do agree there. It was filmed like a TV show, not like a movie. Can't really put my finger on *why* it feels that way, though. Kind of like how soap operas are very distinct in the way they are filmed compared to other shows. You'll flip the station, have no idea what the show is but within 2 seconds, just from the way its shot you know its a soap and then can continue flipping stations. Unless it happens to be Telemundo, then you record it with Tivo because guaranteed there will be hot chicks along shortly.

Wait, what was I talking about?
