Things like this annoy the hell out of me
« on: Thursday, May 31, 2007, 09:42:11 AM »
[rant]

As some of you know, I do part time video work. Since I actually make money from it, I ended up buying (legit) software so I can have the original CDs, manuals and support. Guess where this is going?

So now, I have this guy whom I work with from time to time whom I blurped to that I have legit software and now he's asking me for my CD key because it turns out that he only has pirated software and now wants to upgrade.

Video work is his full time job, so he can definitely afford it. Not to mention that they had a cheap ass upgrade system going a few months back where you could get the full version for dirty cheap (like $300, compared to $1,000+), but of course the guy didn't follow my advice.

Gah, why are people like this? I understand when you're a student and want to try something out. Ok, that's still no real reason to be a "pirate", but when you actually make money from using the apps? That's no excuse.

Let's do some math. This set of apps cost around $1,500 retail. This guy usually charges around $2,000 for a commercial. So ONE job already covers the cost of getting the legit apps.

Go figure...

You have every right to feel annoyed, and you have every right to tell him to piss off.

Of course, you won't actually say that, but you can articulate tactfully why you "just don't feel comfortable" doing it.  If he still doesn't take the hint then you can be a little more blunt.

Dude, just charge him half* what you paid for the software for the serials.

* just a suggested amount, you could ask for more.

If he doesn't like it he can sod off.

Exactly, charge the guy something for your troubles (like the $300 he could've paid) and make some dough off of it.

In a pirate's defense, if I paid for every piece of software I've used, I would be able to buy a small house by now. Price is a factor, but I also enjoy the hunt of finding something I want and making it work (had to buy Kingpin, couldn't get it to work right).

Now before you say "If you can't afford it, don't buy it", let me just say...I didn't.

My only beef with piracy talk is the lost-sale argument.  A stolen piece of software or song is not necessarily a lost sale, though companies consider every instance of piracy a lost sale.

Also speaking of piracy, why the heck doesn't Adobe figure out how to release a cheap or student version of Photoshop.  Isn't it like $600?  I mean come on, everyone has it, why don't you charge $70 or $80 and at least make something.

Adobe does offer academic (student) versions of their software. They are usually around half the price of the normal, commercial, versions, but can't be upgraded.

Adobe knows very well that lots of people use pirated software, but they also have a ton of paying customers. They've already lowered prices and no doubt will continuing doing so in the future, but if they lower it to under $100 "just to make something", they'll lose significant profit from those customers who are willing to pay the current prices.

Having said that, Adobe's applications are nothing to sneeze at and require a lot of development time (ie. money) and their current prices are fairly reasonable for people who make a living from their applications, at least in my opinion.

For example, I know a photographer who starts at $1,500 per job. Something like CS3 Design Premium is probably more than enough for him and costs $1,799 (Standard edition is $1,199, upgrades are even cheaper). So basically in 1 or 2 jobs he covered the price and can now reap the rewards of the full Adobe system (speed, productivity, new features, etc. whatever). So I think for him not to have legit software that he NEEDS to make profit is inexcusable.

Again, I'm not talking about your average user who in all reality doesn't need full Photoshop to start with, that's what Elements is for, or GIMP, or Paint.net or whatever.

That's true, I guess there is GIMP, but GIMP is such a PITA.

Mind you, I would love to see Photoshop sell for $100. :P

Btw, has anyone tried Paint.net?

Paint.net is actually very nice. I'd recommend it to any Windows user over GIMP simply for usability. Also it is capable of doing most of the simple photo editing your average person would want to do with Photoshop.
