olympics 2012 logo
« on: Tuesday, June 05, 2007, 10:48:09 AM »
the logo for the 2012 london olympics was announced a couple of days ago, and so far it's proved a bit controversial. not because it does anything out of the ordinary, but just because it's so shit.

as a side note, members of the popular photoshop and internet humour site, b3ta.com have been lampooning it for a few days now, and managed to get one of their pictures onto a bbc news broadcast. the only reason i mention this is becasue it's based on the infamous goatse. see if you can spot it:

Quick, somebody give idol £400,000.

Yep, that was the cost of that logo.

Not bad, Idol. But it would be better if the letters were purple with a yellow outline. And blockier. And uglier.

This is the same organization that tried to sue the Special Olympics for "trademark infringement." Because, obviously, the Olympics are their trademark. They invented them.

Not to mention all the other shady crap they pull, like taking bribes, signing exploitative contracts with Visa, the invisible business dealings, or the huge amounts of money they make - for what is supposed to be an internationally-recognized government-sponsored cultural tradition.

I've never researched them in detail, but the impression I have of the IOC is that they're like the NFL, only much dirtier, much more criminal, and much more protected by the governments of the world.

They're a fucking business! Why do we treat them like they're the World Health Organization?

Something like that, spruced up, maybe 3D-ish, would be freaking awesome!  Man, go earn 400K Sterling somewhere, would you?

Hahahahaha.
It amazes me how people can spend so much on a logo and have it end up being terrible.

Like when Simon Fraser University spent $250,000 on their new logo: the letters "SFU" in white text inside a red square (not all that ugly per se, but it's something that could have been done in Paint in 5 seconds).

One of the neighbors in my parents neighborhood works for the Olympic committee. He's rich as hell (or, at least his house is). I'm not saying he's corrupt, he is a nice guy, but he is well off. Apparently it's a pretty lucrative job.

No shit it's lucrative.

Imagine if the NFL was a branch of the federal government.

And imagine that they're like the Department of Defense, so over-funding them is some kind of pissing contest among politicians.

Now imagine that they're international instead of merely federal.

Except they're still run like a private business trying to maximize their own profits.

Oh, and there's not even the window-dressing of oversight or accountability.

That's one bad looking logo. The alternative ones made online are a lot better and creative. I don't even understand how something this bad could get approved.

Yeah, That's pretty bad, but 85% of the time the olympic logo is garbage.  See Vancouver 2010 and Beijing 2008.

But yeah, this might be the worst.

I heard something about a "jigsaw logo" that was supposed to "appeal to young people" somewhere, but I hadn't imagined anything this stupid.  Jeez.

And yes, idol, you should go make some money.  Yours blows this out of the water 8 ways to Sunday.
