Games You Hate, But Others Love
« on: Friday, June 15, 2007, 10:19:27 AM »
I'm sure we've all have played some game that other have absolutely sworn by, but other members of the gaming community have absolutely hated. If you can believe it or not, I was one of the few that supported the first Hitman game (they're now making a movie...you can thank me for that), I'm also one of the few to fully support Postal 2 (they're also making a movie...I swear I had nothing to do with it). Anyways, this is about games you hate that others seems to love unconditionally, of of course I'll start first:

Half Life: I could never get into this game for some reason, I had more fun putting in cheat codes at the beginning and shooting innocent scientists and security guards than anything this game had to offer. I'm not sure what it was, but there was something about Black Mesa that didn't draw me in like any other game I've played.

Diablo: I played Diablo I & II for about and hour each and grew tired of clicking on stuff that I wanted to die. I'm not a graphics whore ( my computer sucks), but if I want to click on something to die, I want more of a presentation and control over the situation.

Splinter Cell: I had fun with Splinter Cell during the first few levels, but once the game became all about stealth I hated it. I know it was a stealth game from the start, but most games of this nature give you an exit when you get into trouble, this game doesn't The only weapon you get is a pissy little silencer and dropping on top of people is about as easy as a gay, male, cheerleader pouncing on the captain of the football team during a pep rally.

Thats all that I can think of at the moment, I'm sure more will come to me as the day passes on.

Same here, I appreciated all the stuff there was to do in the game, but I found myself bored most of the time.  I also agree about the Diablo games, Nick.  I love the artwork, story, and cinematics for Diablo and Warcraft I just can't play those types of games, especially RTS.

Also I hate Dead or Alive and Tekken and I love fighting games.

When I can't get anywhere on Oblivion, I fall asleep too.  Broken quests are indeed sleeping pills.  If the damn thing worked the way it's supposed to, I wouldn't feel like such a tool for blowing $90 on it, plus the Shivering Isles expansion.

I could never ever get into Baldur's Gate 2.  I really tried.  I can't stand any one-on-one fighting game with complicated button combos.  The genre should have died with Street Fighter II.  Neverwinter Nights sucks.  Either make the damn thing turn-based, or make it real time.  Otherwise, it can stay the hell off of my computer.

Halo.

Fuck Halo.

I didn't hate the first half of Halo's SP Campaign....
But the 2nd half I hated.

Halo has to be the most overrated FPS in the history of mankind. W/ so many issues that the game has, I still am baffled as to why it got heralded as such a great game. It has all the makings of what a great game doesn't actually have -- repetitive cut-n-paste levels, repetitive gameplay, a mediocre story, and mediocre voice-acting, to name a few things. I'm sure the XB version ran a hell of a lot better than the PC did upon release, but the PC version ran like junk -- bad performance doesn't help any case, either.

I think The X-Box needed an FPS and here came Halo -- and X-Boxers just latched onto it b/c there was nothing else at that time.

Hopefully, Bungie will get its act together w/ Halo 3.

I thought Diablo I was okay, but I think Diablo II is a much better game -- especially on the SP side of things.

We need a thread of the flip side.

Where you have a list of games you love, but everyone else hates. :P

I as well haven't been able to get into FF games.  To be honest, the only one I played was FFX, but I absolutely loathed everything about the game and it turned me off to the series forever.  My favorite console RPG is Grandia II, which most people didn't really like.

Devil May Cry is another one.  I didn't necessarily hate the game, but I found it pretty ho-hum while everyone else seems to love it.

I also dislike the Battlefield games, but only because the code is one big giant pile of crap in all of the games.  The games themselves aren't that bad except for the spawn camping.

Counter-StrikeHalo.

You haven't lived until you've played Final Fantasy XII, I swear to you.

But yeah, I've got a lot of these.  Like idol, there's Halo.  Also Dungeon Siege.  Splinter Cell would be on there too (though "hate" might be a little too strong).  All Tomb Raiders other than the first.  The earlier Resident Evils (again, "hate" is a bit strong there).  I could go on, but that would require more thought.  Counter-Strike is a huge one for me, thanks for reminding me scott... almost forgot to mention it.

On the reverse, there's stuff like Postal 2 (you and I agree there, nick, I still thought that game was fun), I dug the first Hitman as well.  Thief III I remember everyone bitching about, and I liked that, and I was a fan of Grandia II as well, though I don't remember that one being all that hated.  And of course, last but not least, Dawn of Mana.

Counter-Strike.. All versions. The only decent one was Beta 6 back in classic HL.

Super Mario 64. Terrible camera, sluggish controls, having to repeat each level 6 times...

I've tried the Thief games as well, I didn't like those either. I really don't like the fact that I can't defend myself when the shit hits the fan, why would my character go into the fray unprepared? I understand that a game's main focus can be on stealth, but I also feel that my character should be able to pick up a machine gun if need be and should be able to defend himself.

I didn't know Neverwinter Nights sucked, I'm trying to find an RPG that I like, all of the free MMORPGs that I've tried suck. So I've decided to try a point and click one offline and see how it feels.

The SC games basically feel like the Thief games, in gameplay and style -- but, dropped in a modern setting and all. Your guy is basically to always resort to stealthy gameplay, or else he's a dead goose. That's the point.

So, since you don't like Thief too much, I would never expect you to like SC.

There are no "machine guns" back in that era Thief depicts. :P
Garrett uses bows. :P

In Thief III, I think this is the best Garrett has been able to handle himself via melee head-on combat. Though, you still don't really want to go toe-to-toe w/ anyone in that game too often, since its main focus is definitely the stealth factor.

NWN: Original Campaign (SP) wasn't that good. Expansion pack (SP) components, NWN: SoU and NWN: HoTU, were much better.

Have you tried any of the Elder Scrolls games??? Morrowind? Oblivion???
Have you tried Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines???
Have you tried Planescape: Torment???
Have you tried Fallout 1? Fallout 2?
Have you tried KOTOR? KOTOR 2???
Have you tried Jade Empire PC?

FF and CS like others have said. I couldn't get into Pikmin or Moonbase Commander either. I didn't really give MBC a chance though, I should try that again.

Starcraft. I like my rts games to have humans in them for some reason. Zerg, protoss, stuff like that doesn't do it for me.

Remember the theme of your own thread, though.  That's my opinion, and it's no doubt in the minority.  You need to try it out for yourself.

I think NWN would more likely fit in a "Games You Love, But Others Hate" Thread. :P

Haha, I guess you're right.

I tried playing this ame last night, but theres an unresolved Geforce problem which makes the game unplayable for me and many others.
