I'm in the Border Patrol
« on: Friday, July 06, 2007, 06:41:07 PM »
Wooo!!!!

I have to report to Tucson, AZ for orientation on July 23rd, then it is off to the academy in NM for 5 months.  From what I understand the atmosphere is more like college than a boot camp, so I should have internet access as well as some free time to check in.  Though, I doubt I'll have much time to do real work on the frontpage.  After the academy I'll be stationed in Naco, AZ which is a border town that is literally split in half by a huge steel wall.  From what I can tell, there is a city of around 100,000 called Sierra Vista that I'm hoping is within commute distance so I don't have to live in the border town.  Tucson is around another hour north of Sierra Vista, so I should be able to travel there on time off to get away from the small towns.

I can also safely say I have never been so scared of something in my entire life.  I'll be leaving behind everyone I know and moving 1000 miles across the country.  I have seriously felt like I'm on the brink of throwing up since I've heard the news.  I have so much to do in the next two weeks I don't even know where to start.

Tops on the list:

1. Break up with my girlfriend
2. Plan My going away party
3. Find a place to store my car for the next 5 months

Have I mentioned I feel like I'm going to throw up?  Holy crap I can't believe I'm actually doing this.

Life-changing event, eh?  Best of luck.  Just curious.  Why break up?  She wouldn't/couldn't come with you?

I imagine that'd be a hard sell.

But yeah, good luck dude.  At the very least, you know you've got all of us bozos who essentially travel with you everywhere.  I find that to be something of a comfort.  Even if some random people you know on the internet don't make that big a difference in your life, at least you know that moving around won't find you lost to them.  At least they're a constant and they'll still be around to listen when you need to vent about a new situation or whatever.  I think that's pretty cool.

Anyway, good luck!  I hope you manage to enjoy it and find something great there.

Congrats man!  Arizona is boring as hell but you'll only be there 5 months.

Have fun moving to Arizona, what with this heat wave hitting too.  Last I heard, it was around the 110s there.

Hey man, sometimes the scariest things in life turn out to give you some of the greatest payoffs.

So good luck!  And keep us informed.

As far as car storage, I would love to help, but my mom's house is pretty much full of cars at the moment, and will be until September.
Suck it, Pugnate.

Heh. It almost sounds like you're being shipped off for war... the way the whole immigration thing is being made out to be on the news it might not be completely far off.

Good luck and all that stuff. Like Que said, at least this isn't a long goodbye or anything.

Oh, nothing super huge or really new. Just the whole Minute Man thing and how it's all a big issue.

I'm not going to lie....those guys are fucking idiots.  Seriously.  If I was an american and I could think of one group of people to kick out it'd be those guys before the illegals.

We haven't been dating anywhere near long enough for that.

Que, I would never consider the people here insignificant.  Seroiusly, this place is going to be huge for me moving somewhere where I don't know a single person.

Anyway, thanks for all the good wishes.  I'll keep you all up to date on my progress in learning to shoot guns in the desert.
