The marketing effort behind Windows Vista is taking another step, as Microsoft confirmed that instead to deliver each Windows Vista version on one DVD, all versions of Vista will be shipped on a single DVD.

As previously announced Windows Vista will be delivered in the form of six versions, out of which two for corporations, three for consumers and one for the emerging markets.

The consumer-oriented versions, called Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows Vista Ultimate will contain increasingly diverse features (full set available just in the Ultimate version).

According to Microsoft’s statements so far, the Windows Vista Home Basic version is targeting mostly PC beginners, Windows Vista Home Premium includes more multimedia functions and AeroGlass, while the Windows Vista Ultimate represents everything a consumer might desire from an operating system.

This whole marketing strategy generated the following legitimate question: what is an user who buys Windows Vista Home Basic, but later on discovers that he needs Windows Vista Home Premium going to do?

It seems that Microsoft has an answer ready for this dilemma. Windows Vista will contain a little applet called Windows Anytime Upgrade, which can be found in the Control Panel, where the user can see it and use it. In what purpose? Exactly what we’ve talking about until now, namely upgrading from a version of the OS to the following one.

It’s quite obvious that during this process, the user will be directed towards a website where he will be able to buy the respective license. After which, all the user has to do is insert the DVD he initially bought and upgrade his system.

According to Microsoft, Windows Vista Ultimate will cost US$399; Windows Vista Business will cost $299; Windows Vista Home Premium  will cost $239; and Windows Vista Home Basic will cost $199.

YES! Finally Microsoft does something with common sense for a change!

Except for the fact they're releasing 700 different versions of Vista....

Well, yeah but atleast it's all intact.

I think $399 for the Ultimate Edition is ridiculous. The only version that is appealing is the Ultimate Edition! Home Premium may be the next one down (in terms of individual consumer needs), but there's gotta be a major drawback to it.

I'm sure we can all buy the cheapest version, and wait for the rest of the editions to be hacked. Problem solved.

I'm sticking with XP until *absolutely* forced to make the switch.  I don't have the fucking money to buy a new opsys and then a new fucking DX10 video card.  I'm so tired of this crap.

Yep, that's my plan so far. I'm not gonna switch until it's absolutely necessary or I just can't hold out any longer. Actually for a while Iw as tempted to switch back to Windows 2000, but then I realized XP pro was basically 2000 revamped.

Seriously.  I would be shocked if the crack takes more than a week after release to circulate around.

Vista is a worthless upgrade at this point.  It runs like crap, and basically is crap.  Remember the SAT's?

Good analogy. I wouldn't expect Vista to be good right out of teh boz. I expect MS will be patching and servicing it for months (perhaps years) before it's in tip-top condition.

All things considered, XP is the best operating system M$ has ever released. It is also ridiculously old. The hardware we have is AGES ahead of the OS, which basically means that the OS isn't utilizing the hardware.

Then again, who said the OS has to utilize it? You could argue that an OS has to be very basic and minimal, and it is the applications that should be doing the utilization.

That's pretty much why I'm thinking of switching to Linux.

Yeah, me too.  Linux's main problem is support of new hardware, but it's quite good at supporting not-so new hardware.  Like SCSI and RAID cards... XP doens't support any of them natively, you have to load a driver at the time you install Windows.  With all Linux distros, they just work.

Linux is fine if you don't game. But come on, XP is perfectly fine. Sure it has its issues, but I think it is quite good.

Vista won't be worthy of a purchase for at least 2 more years, which is again a life time in our world.

All the interesting Vista features were removed.  Now it's just XP with mass bloat.

I've been using Vista "RC" 1 for the past 3 weeks. It sucks. I don't like the new look -- it feels way too heavy. Seems pretty buggy for a release candidate. There doesn't seem to be any real reason to upgrade from XP. Annoying balloon notifications even more frequent than in XP. Too much nagging about Firewalls, Automatic Updates, and Administrator Privileges. Takes a long time to wake up from Sleep mode. Windows Explorer way of browsing file system is less intuitive than before.

On the plus side, the new file search is good. Almost as good as Spotlight. And startup seems faster too.

Come to think of it, why are they making Vista? Is it just to compete with Apple, or to actually deliver a greater OS than the current one we have (XP)? Coz they're not doing very well in either department.

They are releasing Vista because thats how they make money. Everyone has XP already, so now they need something new to sell.

Well DX10 is going to be a substantial upgrade, but what if they offered a $50 download for XP. Would you guys take it?

Sure.  If by "take" you mean wait for a torrent.
