RE5 is racist.

The new Resident Evil video game depicts a white man in what appears to be Africa killing Black people. The Black people are supposed to be zombies and the white man’s job is to destroy them and save humanity. “I have a job to do and I’m gonna see it through.”

This is problematic on so many levels, including the depiction of Black people as inhuman savages, the killing of Black people by a white man in military clothing, and the fact that this video game is marketed to children and young adults. Start them young… fearing, hating, and destroying Black people.

First off, since when has the RE series been marketed at children. Haven't that always been rated M, as in for adults? So there goes issue 1.

Now, why do you have a problem with RE5 where all the zombies are black (its an african country, so it makes sense that they are), but apparently none of the previous RE games. Oh, right, because they were all white. No problem there, shoot to your hearts content. BRB, I didn't realize I was supposed to be outraged as a white person that the zombies I was killing were the same race as me.

Its not "depiction of Black people as inhuman savages", or "supposed to be zombies." They ARE zombies! Thats what Resident Evil is all about! The only good zombie is a dead zombie so we need to shoot them, no matter the skin color.

And how racists is this blog? Did you notice that "black" is always capitalized while "white" isn't?

Last night I posted a  short piece on the new video game Resident Evil 5.  I linked an  article in the Village Voice by Bonnie Ruberg, a self-proclaimed white person, who questioned the possibility of racially problematic images (racist?) in the game.  I also posted the piece at  Blacklooks.  Never before have I received more hateful comments by angry gamers who called me everything from a "nigger" to a "black hooker" for agreeing with Ruberg that these images of Black people (Black zombies) are problematic.

The response from gamers around the world was shocking.  While I think we could have an intellectual debate about racist imagery in video games, there is no debating the blatant racism from many of Resident Evil 5's supporters.  Their comments were hostile and violent...much like the game itself.  The ability to post comments, both on ATBW and Blacklooks, had to be disabled.  Here's a direct quote from a gamer who disagreed with my post: "Get back into the cotton fields, you filthy nigger."

I am not the first or the only person to question the imagery in Resident Evil 5.  Check out this post by blogger Jason Ellis at microscopiq.  Ellis' post is an interesting look at the images of Black people throughout modern time.

I confess I don't know much about video games, gamers, etc.  I don't play video games, but I occasionally play solitaire on my gfs PC.  However, given the response from gamers... I think we should all be very afraid.  Many of these folks seem like the type who would try to reenact scenes from Resident Evil 5.  Can you say Columbine?

Awesome, bring up the Columbine thing. Its not racist, but its a stereotype that gamers are evil, ready-to-snap killers. And we all know how great stereotypes are! Do I even need to mention the black stereotypes to get my point across?

But if you look at the comments from the original post, there are 130 replies and 90% of them are intelligent people bringing up good points. Which she promptly ignores, focuses on the few retards that say shit just to piss her off, and then takes the high and mighty attitude that none of us are worth speaking to.

I'm going to be frank here, but I find that black people are in general far more racist than anyone else.  They outright say racist things constantly, but as soon as someone says something or something comes along that is completely benign that could be misconstrued as racist (such as RE5), and there is an uproar.

I'll agree with scott.  You aren't alone in that observation.  And yeah, crap like this really gets to me.  Just because the pendulum once swung one way doesn't mean you need to throw it all the way in the other direction, but that's the way American society is right now.  Oh, you're a straight, religious, middle-class white guy?  Then your life must be perfect, you must get everything you want, you must never have to work, and people must just throw money and opportunity at you like it was nothing!  Plus you must be completely imbecilic and undeserving of any recognition for your achievements, you must have shotguns and tins of beans hidden in your house for the apocalypse and when you decide to go slaughter all the black people and homosexuals in the name of Jesus, and you must have money just coming out of your ass for college!  No special scholarships for you!

I hate ignorant people like this woman who can't look beyond their own noses, and I hate the hypocrisy that they *flaunt* like it's A-OK.  That goes well beyond simple race issues anyway, as I hate idiotic white politicians on both sides who just want to ban, censor, and take away all our freedoms until we live in a Socialist police state.  It's one thing if you can point to a legitimate problem like illegal immigration which has tangible consequences that are easy to see, it's another to just start accusing people of hating you when you don't even have facts to back up your claims.  If we lived in anything other than the fuckwit global society that we do, these people would be laughed out of town.  If somebody wrongs you then you deal with that, but you don't make up stuff like what's in this topic to appease your own inflated sense of self-worth, or your culture's communal ego.

If I ever buy a console or RE5 gets a PC port, you can damn well bet -- especially given how good RE4 was -- I'll be looking at RE5.

RE5's trailer was pretty impressive, BTW.

It'd be a damn shame if this game don't wind up being made and all b/c of all the hoopla ... This game looks bad-ass.
