I'm drunk, and I had a surprisingly fun night
« on: Sunday, August 05, 2007, 12:33:57 AM »
OK, I'm home now, after an unexpectedly good night of fun drinking and bullshitting with anyone who would talk to me.  Guys, I'm not a hot number in my middle age, although when I was young, I could not complain.  Sometimes I feel like I'm invisible anymore, but not tonight.  I had a blast at Carlo & Johnny's in Montgomery, a Northeastern suburb of Cincy.  I met a good-looking chick from Dayton, although meeting anyone from Dayton is not normally something to brag about.   There was an outstanding band there--10 people behind the mikes.  Now, 10 people onstage can be either a good or a bad thing.  In this case, it was very good.  It had been a while since I felt so loose out on a dance floor.  Thing is that Friday night was a bit of a wash-out, so I was not expecting things to go well tonight.  I seem to do best when I have low expectations.  Anyway, I haven't been in really good spirits for a long while, so I thought I'd pollute the airwaves tonight with this shit.  Dammit, I wish I could keep this high forever.  Tomorrow is another day, and that's the way it goes.  I hope everyone had at least some fun this Saturday night.

I ended up in a little hole in the wall near where I used to live in Kenwood.  I met up with some of the 20-something crowd I met a couple of years back.  Good times were had by all there too.  Damn.  Why can't my weekends always go like this?

Sounds like a good night.  I remember the days when I used to have nights that felt like what you describe, though I never went to clubs or dancing or anything like that.  Would just go out with friends, maybe talk to a few girls... go out with the boys, head up to Grizzly Peak and hang out with the bikers, smoke, act like morons... go back to somebody's house to drink, talk, enjoy company.  Been a long time since those days.  I don't drink anymore, and my best friend at the time who was an alcoholic has since stopped drinking as well.  I don't smoke anymore, either.  Weekends are a different animal for me now.

Today I spent some time with the Hellgate: London alpha test, watched a little TV, chatted with Idol and Pyro for a while, and watched The Warriors (as in the gang movie from '79 on which the Rockstar game of the same name is based) because I'd never seen the whole thing.  The wife got out our pet rat (a new addition to the family) and he's been handled enough now to have taken a liking to us, so he wanted out and we let him climb around for a while.  Then Julia decided to go to bed and we ended up just laying there talking for an hour or so, then I broke a glass in the bathroom by accident, and now I'm sitting here at 2 in the morning half-not-really-watching The Breakfast Club because it's on TV.

Life is weird.

Weird in the same way a long series of random events is weird?

Ugh.  The morn . . . er, afternoon after, already here.  I'm not really hungover.  It's more of a complete lack of energy.  No desire to move.

You gave up drinking altogether?  I didn't know you had taken such drastic action.  I'm glad you quit smoking.  That will kill you a lot faster.

I haven't really quit altogether, just in the capacities I used to indulge in.  I don't really touch hard liquor anymore, and at most I'll have maybe 3 beers in a night if I'm actually drinking, which is rather infrequent.  The most I usually have now is a glass of wine in the evening.

I'm glad I quit smoking too, but I'll be damned if I don't miss it.  It was never so much a chemical addiction for me, I just really enjoyed the act of having a cigarette.  Got to go outside, hang out somewhere for a few minutes, get away from it all.  I don't ever feel the need for nicotine or anything, or like I just have to have one... but I do miss the experience of it.  Nothing replaces it, unfortunately.

I never was really much of a smoker, but I did always enjoy indulging in a cigarette or two when I was out drinking.  Surprisingly, I do miss it.  Although, I also find myself missing several things out here.  Women, having more than one bar to drink at, and living in a room with less than 3 people all come to mind.

It is amazing how revitalizing a good night out can be  So Cobra, are you planning to hang out with this nice young lady again?

Ant, how are you hooking up to us?  You bought a laptop, right?  It must kind of suck being stuck out there without too much to do, but there's got to be some women somewhere.  There's always women *somewhere*.

Out of it, and like, literally, full of shit.  I just helped my brother move some things too.  *Sigh*  I feel old.  Believe it or not, about half a beer helped.  I didn't want to do alcohol again, but I did want to calm the nerves brought on by too much coffee earlier.

Don't know.  I asked for her email address out on the dance floor, and she gave it to me.  After we closed down the place, she repeated it unprompted, so I guess she wants me to get in touch.  I'm in a general funk now, though.  I was a lot more positive a couple of years ago, which is the last time I got into, er, proactive socializing.  I have this short-term attitude now, and low confidence about a good future.  So I don't know that I want to pursue any longerm relationships.  Who knows, though?  Life is weird, as Que said.

Sounds like a fun night. It's always been my experience that you have the most fun when you aren't really expecting it.

I ended up going backpacking with my brother for a night and a few days. We went along the Appalachian Trail, which extends from Maine to Georgia. We made it about 12 miles the first day- about 1100 feet up and 1100 feet back down with a heavy backpack. I'm so freakin sore. But it was fun, we camped next to a river and drank vodka.

An another note, why did you ask for her email over her phone number? Just curious.

Well, it's a safer question from a guy a woman has just met.  Emails can be safely ignored, or answered carefully.  You can't put someone on the spot through email.  They can also be filtered into the junk folder.  Plus it's easier for me to remember than a phone number.  You can get phone numbers later, from welcome email conversations.  But if you rush it, you can spoil it.  That's all, I guess.
