Fables

Has anyone read these graphic novels?  I was at the bookstore today when I decided to check out some graphic novels.  I haven't bought (or probably read) a comic since I was like 14 or 15, but a recent conversation with someone kind of got me interested in checking out this whole Sandman thing.  I went to go look for it, but couldn't see the first volume (and from looking at them, I honestly don't know if I'd like them).  Nevertheless, Something did catch my eye: Fables: Legends in Exile.

Basically a large group of classic fairy tale characters have had their lands invaded by some evil force and now live in their own sort of underground community in modern New York City.  Legends in Exile is the first in the series and revolves around a murder mystery.  It's actually really entertaining.

Yeah, I've been wanting to pick those up but haven't yet gotten around to it.  I hope to at some point relatively soon.

Also, don't judge Sandman too harshly.  I heard so much about it for years and years, but every time I looked at one of the books I just got turned off.  I hated the art style, the weird use of color... just couldn't dig it by flipping through.  But when I finally broke down and bought the first volume, by the end of it I was completely sold.  There's a little bit of oddness to it because of cameos and crossovers that seem a little unnatural, but even some of those end up being pretty cool.  "24 Hours" (I think it was called) was just amazing.  So my suggestion is to get the first one and don't judge it until you've had a chance to read it through.  It only gets better from there, and I think it's easy to be put off by various elements of the series (artistic or otherwise) until you've actually sat down with the book.  Now I completely love the way the art's done and everything, and it's easily my most loved comic series ever at this point.

fables.. yes, but it's been a while since i picked them up.  It's interesting.  I got into fables because of other stories like wind in the willows.

I won't say you're a dork for reading comic books, but I will say you're an obnoxious huge geek for calling them "graphic novels."
