Bah, its Ocampoo reviewing it, I thought his area was FPS games. His way of reviewing games is so generic.

Yeah, it feels like he's trying to recite words he wrote the night before :P

I don't trust Gamespot as much after they cut off their own testicles with their new scoring system.

edit:

That's probably a little unfair. There have been dozens of previews of this game, yet nothing indicated the game would be so well reviewed. That's pretty sweet.

GSpot isn't in my good graces at the moment, mostly because of individual people.  I've no issue with the scoring or award systems, I just really don't care for Ocampo, Van Ord, or Gherstmann.  They all have different problems, but each of them has something that I can't trust.

Yeah, I can dig the new review system, but the staff has been lacking as of late. The only dude that I still really like there right now (at least that actively comes to mind) is Alex Navarro. He mostly seems to get the bad games to review, but that's mostly because he seems to be pretty good at those. Can't really fault him for that. There's also Ricardo Tores (I think that's his name), but he doesn't seem to do too many reviews these days so his influence isn't there too much.

On the topic of the game though, I didn't realize this was the new game from the people who did the Ground Control series. That always seemed to have one of those followings that suggested that the game had lots of cool ideas but was held back by a little lack of polish. With a history like that, I can see a high-end title coming out and doing as well as this.

The Ground Control games were pretty awesome.  I dug on the first one for quite a while.  Man, that seems like ages ago now.

As far as GSpot staff, I'll agree that Navarro is great.  He's the one guy I actually still like to see and read.  Torres was cool too, but like you said, he doesn't really show up anymore at all.  Is that Bethany chick still there?  She always reviewed stuff properly and made for a good read.

So I bought it on an impulse today. The game looked really interesting from the box, plus I hear Alec Baldwin -- who narrates -- calls his daughter a "dirty little pig" in the opening FMV. :P

Holy shit this game is awesome! The best way to describe it would be RTS PORN! I've been playing for three hours and so far there is no resource gathering, no traditional perimeter creating... nothing but COMBAT. It is a bit like Command & Conquer, minus the cheese. WiC has a lot of atmosphere and a fairly well fleshed out story. It also seems to have a few interesting subplots boiling within. The cutscenes are also quite cool.

I've recently finished with Company of Heroes and Supreme Commander, so I am going through a bit of an RTS phase. WiC lacks the tactics of CoH, but it seems to be shooting for a different sort of experience. The game is about fast paced gaming, and fast paced explosions!

Resource management is very simple. You have points for calling in reinforcements and have various units to choose from. Each unit has its own value based on its strength. You replinish your pool of reinforcement points as you play. Similarly you can call air strikes with your air strike points. There are five different sorts of air strikes at your disposal, each air strike has three levels of strength.

The whole airstrike thing kicks as a lot of ass, and is a blast to do. At times you just leave your units to defend their strategic point while you just bombard enemy units across the map. It is a lot of fun, and highly satisfying.

Honestly this feels a lot more like an action game than an RTS, and is tremendous entertainment because of its focus.

The visuals are impressive in the technical sense. You can zoom in and move around the map with total freedom, and just about everything can be destroyed. While the visuals look great from a technical standpoint, they lack the artistic direction of Company of Heroes. Then again, that suits the gameplay just fine.

I remember seeing this now.  I'd forgotten about it.  It did look like it did some pretty fun things... since you say it's more actiony and less RTS-like, that almost makes me want to give it a try.  Thanks for the screens, too.

Yes Que, you should definitely give it a try. It is very entertaining. This game continues to entertain with its crazy action. It also has some nice cutscenes in the middle, shown comic book style.

Well I just finished it. I had only two missions left, so I don't know why I delayed completing the game, but I really enjoyed it. It is a bit of a one trick pony, and may lack sophistication, but is extremely fun. This is more fun than C&C at its peak -- though to be fair I hated C&C.

But good game. PCG, Gamespot and IGN all gave it around 9.5, which I found a touch high, but I haven't played multiplayer so far.

edit:

Forgot to mention that halfway through I quit, and continued to play on Vista. The visuals are a touch better on Vista. The 'god rays' as they call them, look really sweet hitting you from the clouds, but there was a bit of a performance hit. The game did lag a couple of times, while it never lagged on XP. I'd say the slight visual upgrade wasn't worth it.

So far a number of games including Bioshock seem to look and run better on Vista for me. This wasn't one of them.

But stop reading, and start acquiring this. I don't care if you have to check the magic underworld shop. At least check it out, and don't judge it till the third mission.

It's definitely worth a try. Great gameplay and visuals.

I often compare and contrast Massive and Relic as they both deliver top quality products.

World in Conflict is to Ground Control as Company of Heroes is to Dawn of War.

Never bought WiC or GC.

I do have both CoH + CoH: Opposing Forces and Dawn of War: Gold Edition -- all which I ain't ever installed.

A few years back the original Ground Control sucked me right in and revived RTS games for me. It had squads and new unit dynamics that were relatively simple but really added to the tactical depth. It was also the first RTS game I had ever played that didn't depend on base-building. A couple of years later Ground Control II came out and I seemed to be the only one who loved it! It built on the original and took it further. Not to mention that it was arguably the best looking RTS game of its time and its frames ran so smoothly.

If you get a chance, check out GC2 and you'll see where World in Conflict originated. The gameplay mechanics are practically the same and WiC's visuals are the next step up from GC2.

I enjoyed Ground Control which was kind of why I was interested in this new one.  I don't think I really have the time to bother investing in it now, sadly, but hopefully it did pretty well.  The guys did a hell of a job with the GC games.

The first GC was sweet, never tried the second.  Is this a lot like GC where you don't have a base or anything, just a few units you have to manage?

And how about DoW?  I haven't played an RTS game since like WCIII, would DoW be a good one to try if I'm not a huge fan of the usual boring as hell resource gathering aspect?

YES.  To your second question.  DoW is a very aggressive, fast-paced RTS, and your resource gathering is really more about controlling territory and pushing borders than sending out drones.  There's some base building, but it's pretty quick and dirty for the most part.  As far as I'm concerned it's the best RTS ever, even though I'm still not that great at it just because I suck at RTS games in general.  The single player campaigns are good, though, providing a doable amount of challenge but not being too ridiculous.  Definitely check out one of the games (there's the stock campaign, the Winter Assault expansion, and the Dark Crusade and Soulstorm standalone expansions, all of which are great).

My understanding is that World in Conflict is much like GC was, without base building and stuff.  It was originally planned as a straight multiplayer game, but they decided to expand it at some point during development I guess.

Interesting.  Every so often I get hit with the urge to play an RTS.  I'll probably try one of the DoW games out.

There's no base-building in WiC, just like GC. And just like GC resource points are collected based on your performance. The more RP you have the more support you can call in. I should also note that the "super weapons" are the real joy in WiC! Calling in an airstrike, bombing run, or long range artillery often results with very satisfying effects.

I love infantry units, and the Rangers in WiC were pretty awesome!

GPW, DoW is one of the best RTS games out there. It's relatively easy to get into as well. Give it a shot and let us know what you think!

I'm actually kinda impressed that DoW still holds up with today's visuals. It's still a good looking game!

Ill also push Que sentiments with DoW, its a fantastic RTS game. Its my personal favorite as well, though both me and Que arent RTS lovers in general, but even still if your looking for a new RTS to get into and you havent played DoW, its really the best recommendation your going to get. Plus you can get ready for DoWII which is shaping up to be really awesome too.
