Lets play multiplayer!
« on: Thursday, September 27, 2007, 02:26:08 PM »
From the DoW thread...

Its been a while since I've played a game with anyone here. This needs to change. I'm just going to list a bunch of stuff and maybe we can set up some games.

Retail:
Dawn of War (not installed, but I can do it)
Quake 1, 2, and 3 (and mods of those)
UT2k4
Counter-Strike: Source
Day of Defeat: Source
Red Orchestra
The Ship
Defcon
Diablo 2
Guild Wars
Doom 2 (using ZDaemon or Skulltag)
Various HL2 mods (Hidden, PVK2, Insurgency, Fortress Forever)
Probably others that I can't remember/don't have installed right now

Free:
OpenArena (free version of Q3, gameplay is identical...open source content replacement thats standalone)
World of Padman
]Babo Violent 2
Sauerbraten
Digital Paint 2
Soldat
Or if you know any other free ones, I'm down.

I have DoW, Diablo 2 and Doom 2 from that list. I'm willing to play any of those. Plus the free games, of course. I've been kind of wanting to play WoW again but it's so damn expensive. A case of nice beer is so much more rewarding.

I'm definitely down.  I have a ton of games, but a lot of them may or may not work online if you catch my drift.

PC:
Quake 2, 3 (I will win)
HL2 + whatever mods (I might win)
Counter Strike Source (I will win)
Counter Strike 1.6 (I will definitely win)
Day of Defeat (I might win)
Diablo 2 (Help me win)
Guild Wars (Help me win)
RTCW: ET (I suck at this)

I know I have a bunch more, I'm too lazy to go find what they are though.

360:

Gears of War (I suck at this)
Rainbow 6 Vegas (I suck at this)
Halo 3 (I might win)
Ghost Recon: AW (I might win)
Perfect Dark Zero (I might win)
Chromehounds (Help me win)

my gamertag is "beeeer"  thats 4 e's pal.

I'm willing to play DoW or Defcon.

If either of those come up, just send me a message and if I'm around I'll join up.

Oh yeah, I'd also be willing to install Moonbase Commander.

Oh yeah, MBC I could reinstall (once I locate the disc). Sadly, it is not free. If I find any copies anywhere I'll try pick em up to send out.

We should totally get a list together to add everyone in Guild Wars. I'd play it more if I had someone to play with. I've got a level 1 character named "Idol Minds" so its easy to add to the friends list, and with that you can see when I'm playing my other characters.

Oh yeah...I'm also down for DS games.

I'm limited to HDD space right now, unfortunately.  Idol and I tried the Ship but then I had to uninstall it... but there's light at the end of the tunnel.  I finally got around to putting in my RMA request for my busted 300GB drive, so hopefully that'll get fixed within like a month or so.  Still have to order special packaging (can you fucking believe that? *ordering* a box through the mail so I can mail something out), then send it and wait.

So... Quake 2 is small, yeah?  I'm a Quake junkie and haven't played any multi in years now, so that'd be fun.  I'm also up for DoW if that one wins out.  I'll just have to uninstall BioShock, which I'm not quite ready to do.  Either of those is cool.  DEFCON could be fun again also.  I think I still have that on here.

On my PC, a long time ago, I put in Q2 by itself; it's still installed....
And in another folder I have Q2 + the two expansions installed, since it came w/ Q4: Special Ed.

Quake 2 alone = 388 MB
Quake 2 + the two expansions = 781 MB

Oh, yeah -- Quake 2 MP brings back A LOT of MP memories.
That game ruled online.

So much, that I was through a good portion of the SP...and I never finished the SP...

My Q2 install is new (as in, installed today) and I put a couple engine mods to try and its at 400MB. Which of course is tiny by todays standards.

Though I'm probably not as fond of standard Q2 DM and the like as the rest of you. I was all about Action Quake 2 and Digital Paint, never really played much DM/TDM/CTF. I did that sort of thing in Q1 and then Quake 3, which OpenArena reminded me just how much I love that fucking game. Everything is just so..."chunky" and good. I love it.

I still say Quake 2 is the best multiplayer FPS ever made.  There are tons of other great ones, but I had so much fun with that one that I don't think anything else quite topped it.

I'm actually playing the SP levels on my PSP via the PSx version of the game.  Heh, what fun.  It plays surprisingly well for the awkward setup of lacking two sets of shoulder buttons.

Anyway.. think I'll install tonight.  Anybody up for a game?

I'll totally play tonight.

Not sure where Q2 sits on my "best multiplayer" list. Quake 3 takes top dog for pure DM/TDM. But like I poted above, I didn't do much of that in Q2. Tribes is ultimate CTF for me. Quake 2 I have to give credit just for how much time I spent in the mods.

It's hard to say if Quake 1 or 2 wins for mods with me, because I played a freaking lot of mods for both, and the communities were phenomenal.  Quake had more SP mods, and a bit more creativity there for sure, but Quake 2 had gobs of legitimately good and different MP mods for the time, nearly all of which were pretty fun to play and which were well supported by the community.  I never felt like I couldn't find a server for something, you know?  Even the stock game always had servers.

And you know, I never really played much Tribes CTF.  It just never seemed to work out.  I played a lot more of that in Quake 2, and a lot of TDM.  Quake 3 I played almost purely deathmatch.  If anybody prefers 3 to 2 I'm willing to go that route as well.  Many happy Friday Night Frag Fests were had at PlanetQuake with both games, and I'll be happy to relive the memories any way I can.

I gotta' eat dinner and junk, but I'll get the game running (hopefully) with that port you suggested and come on later.  And I'm totally FRAPSing how badly you all slaughter me.

Also, repost the port and stuff idol, or any mods you want to use, for those who want to join up.

I played mostly DM for Q2.

For Q3, anything worked for me -- DM, CTF, 1 on 1; whatever.

Repost from the other thread:

Quote
Quake2maX, EGL, Quake 2 Evolved...yeah, theres a few source ports. I'd be really tempted to use R1Q2, because according to wikipedia its been the official Q2 client/server for Quakecon tournaments.
No real preference so far from the ones I messed with (all but Quake2Max, but I played that one a long time ago). They all do a pretty good job adding some little bells and whistles (blood effects! Oh boy!), but otherwise are very similar.

*EDIT*

R1Q2 doesn't seem to have as many graphical updates as the others. Its more "stock"...loads shit in a blink. I like EGL but strangely it doesn't load that fast an...low framerate? WTF? It hovered around 25 fps...maybe theres a cap in the config. Gotta look. Also, levels loaded slower. Quake 2 Evolved loaded slower as well, but didn't have the framerate issue and added some nice graphical touches.

So...now I'm undecided. I want to use EGL if I can get the framerate going, but I do like the super-fast loading of R1Q2. Q2E can work as well...gah...so many choices.

I fully intend to get this up and running regularly.  I don't know how many of you are interested in playing, but the EGL port works great for me, and I've managed to set up a dedicated server with Eraser bots that people can connect to and play on.  I can connect to it and play as well, so it's easy for me to run tests and junk.  I hope to get a bunch of models from the polycount archives (if it's all still there) and make a bunch of custom bots like I did in the old days, that way even if just a couple people want to play there's still enough presence on the server for it to feel lively.

Anybody be up for a reinvigoration of the PQ FNFF?

 ...

Aaand like an hour after starting this post, I totally am coming back to it.  I just went over to PQ and was nearly driven to extreme sadness seeing a bunch of old faces.  God damn it I miss the old days sometimes.  It didn't help that somebody posted a link to an old forum archive where I actually saw some of my old post, and some jokes with old friends.  You wouldn't think some random place on the internet would hold so many memories.

So, uh... yeah.  Quake 2.  We must play it.  Because now I need to indulge my nostalgia as much as anything else, and what better way to do it than by making people bleed?

EDIT - So I'm going to set something up for tonight.  Already got a dedicated DM server up with bots (67.188.97.0), and will work on refining my CFGs and stuff later this afternoon.  Just wish I had some of the old map and model packs.  There's scant little of value out there now, though I did find a treasure trove over at tastyspleen.net.

Anyway, if you want a game, hop on the server!  I'll leave it up for a while and maybe pop in if anybody joins up.  Bots will be on there all day.

I might pop in now and then, but I'm also going around collecting old Q2 mods and stuff that maybe we can run to mix things up. Freeze Tag would rock if we got enough people (not sure if the bots understand it), or Holy Wars? Catch the Chicken? Leper? Man...some good stuff out there.

Oh absolutely.  I'm just trying to learn how to do all this stuff again.

Officially, bot DM and bot auto_team CTF servers are up.  I'll keep them running today just as a test, so anybody that wants to try installing Q2 or fiddling with EGL or another source port and stuff can just jump right in and try something out.  I'll figure out what other fun mods we can run later.  I miss playing Red Rover.

Though that doesn't support dialup, does it idol?
