hahaha that was the funniest thing I've ever see Lettermen do. I don't like David Letterman's arrogant style and overdone studio etc., but it was perfect for this little roasting. Good stuff.

Let's see, I don't like her, and I don't like him belittling people unless they gain something from it (like the Hello Deli).  Can't say I liked watching this, not that I felt sorry for her.

As much as I'm not a fan of Paris Hilton, I like her more than the people who are like "She sucks.  What's she ever done anyways?  Worthless."  The same can be said about celebrities like Kevin Federline.  Who the fuck cares?  Have they really done any less than, say, Princess Dianna, Elton John, Yoko Ono, or countless other people who are famous and revered for either having a very one dimensional skill they are very good at or just falling into fame and money?  In the grand scheme of things no, not really.

How can you blame these people?  They're famous for a reason, and generally that's because the same people hating them now were eating them up a few years ago because they have to know everything going on in the life of some random stranger.  Hating on celebrities for no reason is a few steps below adoring them for no reason as far as I'm concerned.

And for some reason, while posting this I just had the brilliant idea to make and start selling Mario Teran shirts.  I don't know why because it's really not related to the topic at all.

I was with you until you mentioned Elton John.  Didn't you overreach there just a bit?

I don't hate Paris Hilton.  I don't understand what the big deal is with her, positive or negative.  At least Yoko Ono was notorious for a reason.

Not at all, Elton John is a musician.  Beyond that he's nothing.  He's very good at what he does, and deserves recognition for it, but when it all comes down to it there's little difference between what he contributes to society compared to some unkown singer/songerwriter playing outside of a coffee shop.  Compaired to people like Nobel Laureates he's famous for pretty much just as stupid of a reason as Paris Hilton.  Why bother to differentiate between the two?

But that's just my view.

Oh, come on.  Won't you reconsider?  Are you really saying that a gifted musician can't bring about an improvement in the overall human condition?  Mozart, Beethoven, Hilton--all of equal value?

You're assuming that the cultural significance of Elton John even approaches that of Mozart or Beethoven.  It's probably a matter of opinion, but I really don't think it does.

OK, fair enough.  It's definitely a subjective thing.  But at least we can agree that musicians can have transcendental significance, even if they do nothing beyond music.  It's a matter of degree.   :-\

Princess Dianna did a lot for charity and child victims of land mines. I'm not saying that I'm not tired of all the attention she got and still gets (becuase I am), its just she did contributed a lot more than people like Paris Hilton. I think it’s a little unfair of a comparison I guess.

Sure, I'd agree that it'd be an unfair comparison.  I actually probably should have been more clear, but Princess Diana wasn't famous or revered for her humanitarian efforts, but rather just because she was a princess.  Were she, I assume her death would have been overshadowed by that of Mother Teresa, instead of it being the other way around.  Were Paris Hilton to take up a cause do you think people's perception of her would change all that much?  Diana had noble goals and hobbies (it's questionable whether the Ottawa Accord would exist without her efforts), but again, that's not why people worshiped the ground she walked on - she was worshiped as the Princess of Wales before she ever set foot in an AIDS ward or old warzone.  If it was they'd be worshiping Jeffery Sachs even more so instead of not knowing who he is.  Diana certainly did good things with her influence, and that should be recognized, but so do a lot of people.

I think the same think about Kevin Federline. Both of these people have contributed nothing to society. In fact, they have probably made it worse. The other three you mentioned all contributed things.

I don't hate her for no reason. I hate her because she is worthless to society and people worship her for it. The difference is, I hate her without paying attention to her. I didn't watch the original clip because honestly I don't give a shit about her unless she does something worthwhile.

Why don't you run out to pick up your weekly People magazine and leave the conversation to the men.  OK, Princess?

Well, that's your problem.  If you really want to know what's up you have to go to Perezhilton.com

See that's the thing.  I don't think the other three really contributed much in the grand scheme of things.  Elton John is a very talented song writer, Princess Dianna did a lot for charity and brought a lot of mainstream attention to a humanitarian cause, and Yoko Ono is a loudmouth hippy bitch that isn't good at anything.  Look at it that way and they've contributed something.  The guy working at 7-11 contributes something, Kevin Federline contributed something when he washed cars, and Paris Hilton contributes something in that she a.) spends a lot of money, and b.) gives a bunch of low self esteem having morons someone to make themselves feel better about whatever shitty place in their life they find themselves in.  That said, in the grand shceme of things none of these people haven't contributed shit compaired to those like Tim Berners-Lee, Edward Teller, Alan Turning, James Watson, or that child molesting French Anderson.

That in itself is fine, you don't have to cure cancer to be someone worthwhile, but when people justify their hatred (hatred is key here...non-interest is completely different) for someone based on the fact that they don't contribute anything, then you have to take a look at the people you respect according to the same standards.  My argument is, if that's how some people are going justify who they idiolize and who they demonize, then at least do it right and respect those that have saved millions of lifes or changed the course of history rather then those that have some pop culture relevance.

That said, this isn't really directed at anyone here, but rather at a certain attitude some people 'pretend' to have.  But, if I were to point out someone in pop culture that detracted from society, I'd pick gossip columists like that Perez Hilton guy before any celebrity who fell into their fame through no extraordinary talent or feat of their own.

What it comes down to is that people like Paris Hilton are all but literally worshiped by so many, and the reason is... who knows?  They've done nothing but perhaps get born into money, which wouldn't be so bad if people didn't idolize them.  But people do, and they shouldn't.  That's really all it comes down to for me.  People should hate idiots like Paris Hilton who live lives of flagrant waste and hedonism, who do nothing but throw away money and time... but people don't.  They love her for it.  *That's* what makes me angry.  It isn't so much the Paris Hiltons of the world that I hate, but those who adore them.  As it is with so many things, I hate the object for the masses that embrace it, not so much because of whatever it's actually done.

I can get behind that.  I wouldn't say I hate them, but I sure as hell think I'm better than them.

There you have it then.  "Hate" is a rather overused word (or perhaps I just have rage issues), but I think the general sentiment is there in either case.
