I say this with caution: who needs UT3?

Gamers who need something to hold them over until this Tribes-spiritual successor is released?

Tribes-like GarageGames Web Title Revealed by Alpha Video Leak
by Nick Breckon Dec 23, 2007 2:43pm CST

Unprotected links on the InstantAction.com website, a browser-based gaming platform by developer GarageGames, have today lead to the discovery of several alpha-level videos showing off the company's upcoming team-based online shooter.

A source close to GarageGames stressed that the videos--depicting Tribes-like combat on an alien world--represent early work, and were meant for internal use only. The clips are viewable below, edited into a single silent movie.

The identity of the project was uncovered in October, along with the news that GarageGames had ramped up their employee count in advance of development.

GarageGames was founded in 2000 by four former employees of Dynamix, the developer responsible for the popular multiplayer shooter Starsiege: Tribes.

Hard to tell much from the video, but the prospect is exciting and even that little bit looked cool!

More on TRIBES-Like Footage [December 24, 2007, 12:40 pm ET] - Viewing Comments

FiringSquad has more on the Starsiege TRIBES reminiscent footage recently "leaked" (story) following earlier "leaked" information about the project (story). Tim Aste of GarageGames' spills all sorts of beans about the project, claiming the "leak" is forcing their hands into revealing things earlier than planned. He describes a browser-based game with deep mechanics that are not overly complex, hopefully bringing back gameplay reminiscent of the days of QuakeWorld. He says the game has only been in development since October, but they are serious about this:

"The game has only been in development since the end of October, but the studio / company has flirted with the idea for quite some time (as you probably remember from around March 06). This time we are for real, we have the means and motivation, and hopefully we can find a way to bring that whole PC multiplayer gaming experience we miss back in some form to the people who miss it, and maybe introduce it to many more."

So I can pretty much scratch off buying any more multiplayer shooters.

News to make Idol happy.

IGN interviews GaragesGames on Fallen Empires: Legions.

Tim Aste: That's because the most untraditional part of this game, is what we are calling "live development". Doing this game through an integrated web platform like InstantAction allows us to develop the game in a manner similar to "episodic content." I don't really like using that term, but the concept is sort of similar. The plan is to launch a "core" game with a bunch of polished, fun gameplay packed in to start. From there, we fully intend to keep the development going, adding more and more over time. A lot of what happens will be in the player's hands.

We'll be starting out with a solid design, but will listen to player feedback, and keep this thing alive and growing over time, even though we'll be delivering a lot of fun right from the start. We don't want the game to get stale after a month.
Sounds like this game will get "subscriber" content often for no monthly fees or anything.
Hey Flagship -- please, take notes! :P

IGN: What kinds of game modes will be available for play?

Tim Aste: Our first core release is focused around getting one mode sweet, with more modes coming very shortly after depending on what is happening in the game world and what players want. Rather than shipping a bunch of modes in the box and then finding out that players really only love and play one or two, we want to listen to the players right from the get go.

The actual game tech is designed in a very modular sense so it can be expanded easily, and new gameplay modes are a breeze to add in. We have several in testing right now, but we aren't sure which one will be our first step quite yet.
Cool.

IGN: What are the system requirements, or if those aren't decided, how powerful a rig will players need to run the game?

Tim Aste: System requirements haven't been nailed down yet, but the game will have to be fairly scalable either way because we want a lot of people to be able to play, and do so competitively. You'll almost certainly need pixel shader enabled hardware, but almost everybody we expect to be interested in this game has that by now.
Doesn't sounds like it's be a system-killer for requirements. Good!

IGN: When will this be available? Have you settled yet on a price?

Tim Aste: We'll do our first release within the next few months and then kick off live development where a lot of new stuff comes down the pipe. We plan on pulling testing groups from the InstantAction site very soon actually, so you might want to go sign up if you're interested in getting in.

We haven't figured out pricing yet, and that again is something we want to talk with players about in the beta and make sure we get right. We definitely want to make it easy for you to invite friends in and let them play with you though.
I wonder what they'll come up w/ for a pricing plan...

Lifetime subscription?
Monthly plans???
Yearly plans?!?!?

Fallen Empire: Legions Beta [June 24, 2008, 9:48 pm ET] - Viewing Comments
Grab your jetpack, as the InstantAction Website is now allowing access to open beta testing of Fallen Empire: Legions, the online action shooter described as a spiritual successor to Starsiege TRIBES. Anyone with a free member ship can access the beta (thanks Voodoo Extreme). Word is: "Legions is bringing speed back to First Person Shooters. Jet through wide open maps as you battle it out with up to 16 players - all in your web browser. Weapons like the Chaingun and Laser Rifle help you on your path of destruction."

I've been in the beta... can't play due to crippling graphics issues.  Dunno' if they've been resolved yet.
