Ratchet & Clank for the PS3
« on: Thursday, October 25, 2007, 04:12:18 AM »
It was released, probably the only PS3 game I was really interested in and depressed that it was exclusive. Gamespot gives it a 7.5 but its a lousy ass review. The weakpoints:

Quote
There's some good humor in it, but the story isn't very interesting, and the ending is a letdown

He basically just contradicted what the R&C plots are. Basically some mean baddie wants to destroy everything, thats all it is, why do we want to care? Because like what any cartoon aims for, delivers some charm and humor along the way, if there's good humor in it than it accomplishes what the games intention was. However I can't say about the ending.

Quote
So many different, often unnecessary gameplay mechanics that the game lacks an identity

Honestly, Im trying to figure out what that means. R&C is a platform game at its core, and it delivers as the reviewer mentions, but he complains there are too many other fun mechanics that it doesnt feel like a R&C game? Its ridiculous, he doesnt say any of them are bad, he just says its bad because there's too many. From what I saw there were a couple new that arent in passed R&C games. So I guess its a problem for a new sequel to try and freshen up new mechanics but keeping old ones that were tried and true ones that worked.

Difficulty is too easy and only the last hour or so is remotely challenging.

This may be the only legitimate complaint, but judging by his other comments it feels like the guy has never played any of the games ever. He basically goes over how every aspect of the game that made the passed games great, is still retained in this one, yet thats bad. It makes no sense. I mean there are games where the mechanic can wear old with every sequel, like the Tony Hawk games, but with this he still acclaims that the various and many new weapons in the game are refreshing and fun, the plot is full of humor, and visuals are vibrant and fantastic, yet somehow it suffers. I don't think I've ever gotten pissed off at a review before, mostly because every game I've played I've always agreed with Gamespot's view, otherwise I couldn't say because I've never played the game. In this case its the first real bad review I could point out and say, this is bullshit without ever playing the game. And its my first sad realization that Gamespot is really on the decline.

At this point I don't trust Gamespot any further than IGN.  I'm using Metacritic more than ever to get a good cross-section of published opinion.
