If you haven't seen this yet, watch it. Great performance by Whittaker, and definitely one of the best movies ever made.

I don't know that I'd go that far, but yes, it was definitely a shining moment for Whittaker, which I was glad to see him get.  He hasn't had anything that great for a while, seems like.  And yes, it was indeed a very good movie.  Julia and I Netflixed it a bit ago and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

haha well I had just finished watching when I wrote that. After it settled in for a bit, I think the praise was a little too high lol. One of the best movies of 2006 though. I'd put it in the top 10 movies of 2006.

hehe... well it is just so strong a movie on an emotional level. The performances are so fantastic that the whole thing feels really exhilarating. Also I don't think we've had good movie years for a while now.

Still a great movie. Although, apparently the medic role was entirely made up.

Well normally I wouldn't appreciate that, but I think it was a vital addition to the movie. We identified with him, and felt most of his emotions as he went through his personal journey.

Many of the actions attributed to the doctor did take place, but were done by various people. He was basically a combination of characters:

For example Idi Amin's wife did have an affair with his physician. When she tried to have an abortion, she died because of complications in the village. When Idi found out, he had her corpse hacked into pieces like the movie shows. However the movie mischievously skirts the scene where she died because of medical problems, and just cuts to where the Scottish doctor comes across her gruesome remains.

While we naturally assume that Amin had her tortured alive, that's not what happened. And if you think about it, the movie is very clever in that it skips the scene and lets us naturally attribute it to the man's monstrosity. So while he did murder a lot of people, his wife wasn't one of them.

Later when the movie depicts Dr. Gariggon being tortured for attempting to poison Amin, there is some truth to it. Amin actually had the physician who had slept with his wife tortured and murdered.

I thought 2006 was a good year for movies... Pan's Labyrinth, Children of Men, The Departed, Last King of Scotland, Blood Diamond

Of those I really liked Pan's Labyrint. I didn't think too much of Children of Men on the first viewing, but that's because I was expecting more after the rave reviews. It was good though, just not that good, in my opinion.

I liked The Departed, though I don't think it was Scorsese's best.

Blood Diamond was an enjoyable mess though. It had a good message with some superb acting, and a fairly solid script. Thrown in for good measure were some Rambo style action scenes, which made it quite goofy. I enjoyed it, but I thought the lack of direction messed it up.

I didn't like Children of Men.  It was a cool movie, and I loved a lot of what it did... it just didn't really go anywhere or do anything.  Amazing cinematography, some great scenes, interesting ideas, what have you, but afterward I just sort of sat there and was like "What the hell was the point of all that?"

Pan's Labyrinth was fantastic.  Amazing movie.  Last King was good, but I didn't see the Departed or Blood Diamond.  The latter looked really... I don't know.  Boring, I guess, but that doesn't seem like the right word.

At moments The Departed can be a gore movie for the art crowd.

In somewhat related news s ince we're kind of talking about Pan's, the HD DVD version of the film is coming Dec.26/07.  Hurray!

Actually I can't decide on HD DVD or Blu-ray.

I love this movie. 

"You're a child, thats what makes you so f-in scary."

Also the part where Whittaker plays the accordian and sings sadly is so haunting just a really powerful scene.

Glad he got an oscar for the performance.

Being primarily a Mozilla Firefox user these days its rare I ever fire up IE for anything but I thought what the hell maybe I kept the link to The Mind's Eye and this new site somewhere in my bookmarks and thankfully thats where they were.

Last time I had to do a whole lot of complex searching putting in the Beav's forum name to find the sites.

Man I really need to stop deleting the important stuff accidentily when I do mass deletion of the tons of bookmarks I regularly collect.
