WTF, Viva Pinata PC comes out this week
« on: Monday, November 05, 2007, 09:04:36 PM »
Missed that gold announcement.

Same week as Gears of War and CoD4? You know, probably would have been a good idea to hold it back for a slower week. I know we're getting swamped with heavy hitters, but I think VPPC is going to get lost in the shuffle.

Has anyone played either version of this?  I'm thinking it could be fun.

Have it on 360, and it's honestly pretty good.  Julia and I both had some issues with it that we initially found all but unforgivable, but when we went back to try playing it again we really couldn't remember what they were.  There are some bugs, and some of them are annoying, but if you at all like the concept of the game it's pretty great.  Once you get past the learning curve and get used to the minor issues, you can play this thing like crazy.  It's a little weird, but honestly the kid-friendly exterior doesn't come down so heavily or stupidly that it kills anything.  There's even some decent humor and stuff in there.  That actually surprised me quite a bit, as I was expecting to be treated like a preschooler the entire time, and while there's some of that, it's pretty minuscule.

My guess is the Windows version has some of those bugs squashed, which would make it more or less a must-buy in my book if you find the concept interesting.

From what I've seen it seems a bit like a cross between Animal Crossing and the Chao gardens from the Sonic Adventure games.  Would you say that that is somewhat correct?

Hmm... not exactly.  There isn't a great deal of Animal Crossing stuff here.  I don't really remember the Chao stuff from Sonic really, either.  I didn't fiddle much with that game for some reason, despite liking it.

Anyway, it basically boils down to you meeting various requirements to first attract an animal (say you have to have so much grass or water or kind of fruit or other animal), then once it visits, you have to meet certain requirements to get it to stay (usually giving it things to eat and such).  After that, you have to get it to breed by building it a house and meeting other requirements, and then you generally use that animal population as a kind of stepping stone to achieve other goals.  It really builds on itself.  And this sounds horribly tedious, I know, but it doesn't play that way at all because you generally aren't rushed into doing anything, there's a constant feeling of progression because you earn experience and unlock new things, and there are some various little side challenges and things that pop up.  Plus just building the garden can be very fun and rewarding, especially if you make it look cool, and you can go a million different routes trying to move up the food chain to more desirable animals.

I got to a point where it seemed all I was doing was keeping the animals from killing each other, keeping the plants from wilting, and keeping the predators out.  I was so swamped with defense that I couldn't accomplish much else.  That's pretty much when I quit.  This game may look kiddie, but I think most kiddies would have a hell of a time with it.

But if you stick with it, it gets better.  Eventually a lot of those more aggressive elements are rendered negligible because of stuff you earn via experience (and that you can buy).  Plus, a lot of it doesn't turn out to be such a big deal anyway.  Those dudes that wander in and supposedly wreck your stuff often don't do very much that isn't immediately correctable, and sometimes they don't even seem to do much of anything at all.  Worry got the better of me at first too, but once I worried less and got a bit further it became much less of a problem.  Also, most players who get really into it will have like 4 or 5 gardens instead of just one, and focus on different creatures for each one (since they often need very different requirements).  Julia's tried doing that and had much success.  It helps you specialize and in some cases minimize how often your creatures want to kill each other.  A lot of that, apparently, has to do with having your garden too full so that everybody's feeling cramped, and there are specific creature types that naturally hate other ones.  Once you learn which relationships to avoid it gets a hell of a lot better.  Julia knows more about it than I do, but there's information out there (http://www.pinataisland.info/ has been a big help, and some RARE employees have even posted on their forums in regards to bugs and stuff).
