At last, capitalism (and democracy!) come to China
« on: Thursday, November 08, 2007, 11:26:48 PM »
I won't bother writing a summary, because I'm sure you've heard by now: toy beads made in China, when swallowed, contain chemicals that metabolize to produce GHB. This is only the latest in a series of defective Chinese products that are killing us.

When these stories first started breaking, the Chinese government's reaction was to deny it and censor the local media. Then they issued more denials. Then they accused the Western media of exaggerating the problem, issued more denials, and censored the local media. Then they acknowledged the problem, sort of. Then they announced that they would crack down on this sort of thing, and started executing factory owners.

Also, I've heard rumblings of "retaliatory sanctions" (Wikipedia mentions this), although I doubt they'll actually do it.

My point is, China has at last achieved parity with the West.

hahaha I laughed out at "and started executing factory owners"... that can't be true. That whole paragraph was hilarious though.

I had to laugh at the story of some local kid swallowing 30 of those beads. Like one or two I could see swallowing on accident as a kid, but 30 leads me to these two conclusions:

1) the kid wasnt old enough to know it wasnt candy, and therefor the parents shouldnt have been leaving him alone
2) the parents left him alone
3) the kids heros were the Hungry Hungry Hippos

They already executed the former head of their State Food and Drug Administration for reasons related to this. At least one factory owner (or manager) committed suicide after lead-tainted toys were traced back to his factory - even though the yellow lead paint was produced by a different factory, that sold the paint to a different factory, that in turn sold the paint to his factory.

I can't find him anywhere on Wikipedia, but the guy who owned the "toxic syrup" plant was arrested several months ago. He's almost certainly gonna die, if he hasn't already. Edit: His name is Wang Guiping. I can't find any recent news about him.

Well to be fair, Texas isn't a country.

China disturbs me greatly.  I believe the evidence provided here adequately shows why.
