Dungeon RunnersIt is an MMO but you can play for free with some restrictions (I'll get to those later). Que and I played it last night and had quite a bit of fun.
The game feels almost like a mix of WoW and Diablo, but without that same level of overall polish. The graphics are colorful and "chunky", similar to WoW style. You run around in 3rd person and kill mobs. Everything is instanced, so its not one large world to explore. Towns are hubs where you get quests and sell junk between your trips into the dungeons.
Dungeons are randomly generated when you enter them, which is nice. The tilesets are fairly flat so the dungeon designs so far aren't terribly interesting. This may change. We did give a run into a new tileset that was kind of cool. Still flat for the most part, but nice enough. Looking at the screenshots on the site shows come cool places, though.
So it boils down to get a quest that has you kill X number of monsters or collect X number od items (that you get by killing monsters), and along the way you get new armor and weapons and level up.
Combat is simple. There are mobs hanging around in the dungeons, usually in groups of 4-6. Run up or fire at them to engage where they swarm you and you use your abilities to kill them all. Nothing really special to report, its not particularly good or bad.
What makes it interesting are your abilities. This is a cool part of DR. There are 3 starting classes: Fighter, Mage, and Ranger. These classes only determine what weapon/armor and abilities you start with. You can train in anything you want. If you see a cool ability, you can go ahead and train it no matter your starting class. Que was a fighter and then picked up a chain lightning spell, for example. You could be a ranger and switch to some fighter skills when things get close. Whatever you want. It just costs gold, and lots of it to train new abilities.
You'll get lots of gold from quests and selling drops. Some quests seem to repeat forever, so you can retake them to earn more gold by killing mobs. Loot drops you can make a bunch on since you'll be selling everything above a certain quality.
Thats one of the limitations of a free account. As a non-paying member, you won't be able to use loot above a certain quality. So that super awesome sword you just found? Bummer, no can use. Also, your inventory is limited in certain ways. Each potion takes up one inventory slot, whereas paying member can make use of potions that stack. Subscriptions also give you the ability to have a bank where you can store even more loot. But really, so far those are the only restrictions. You can play free all you want otherwise.
So cool little free MMO. If you're bored some night it might be worth giving a spin.
