Gamespot GOTY chosen!
« on: Saturday, December 08, 2007, 04:05:07 PM »
http://www.gamespot.com/best-of/?om_act=convert&om_clk=multimodule&tag=multimodule;picks;title;1

I voted for Crysis.... as if it matters, but I found the results so far to be interesting:

1. Unreal Tournment 3 15%
2. Crysis 14%
3. Call of Duty 4 12%
4. Supermario Galaxy 10%
5. Halo 2 9%
6. Bioshock 8%
7. Assassin's Creed 8%
8. Mass Effect 7%

So the top two games are PC exclusive? Yay. :)

Quote
Why Crysis? It's the shooter that pushes the limits of gameplay and technology in almost every way possible. Yes, it's got the most advanced graphics seen to date, but it's also a deeply rewarding shooter that requires you to think as much as react. Dropped into large levels, you're constantly making decisions, whether you're conscious of them or not. Which approach do you take to the objective? Go stealthy or guns blazing? How about using your nanosuit's powers to vault over a fence or onto a rooftop to hide from the enemy? Use cloak and stalk your prey? Do you even want to get in a firefight right now?

One of the most rewarding moments that we had in Crysis was during an escape from a military base at night. Running into the woods, we stumbled into a large squad of soldiers hunting us. The ability to make your own tactics on the fly let us suddenly slow down to use the suit's cloak powers, silenced weapons, and headshots to raise havoc in the enemy's ranks. Suddenly, the hunters were the hunted, and they were panicking at being picked off one by one. This wasn't a "stealth only" sequence; we could have gone guns blazing or bypassed the enemy altogether. It was this open-ended, emergent gameplay--the ability to let us tackle our challenges in whatever way we wished while requiring us to think on our feet that helped the game squeak past impressive shooters such as the highly addictive Call of Duty 4, the extremely polished Halo 3, the creepy and distinctive BioShock, and the jam-packed game known as The Orange Box--all of which are genuinely exceptional games in their own right that are absolutely, positively worth your while. But for being able to make us feel like an incredibly lethal and intelligent predator in a way that perhaps no other game has done, Crysis takes this award.

Yea that was my thought exactly. Write to them.

You could actually pretend you are wanting to buy advertising for The Witcher, and are disappointed it hasn't been represented. Just don't sound too harsh, or they might fire a few more people.

I hope The Witcher gets RPG Of The Year -- and it should be that award, at the very least.

I wonder if K&L will get the "Dubious Award" of Flatout Worst Game from GameSpot...
...Though, chances are probably slim of that happening. :P
Hell, it probably won't even get the "Dubious Award" of "Most Disappointing Game" from GameSpot. :P

I'm expecting K&L to get GameSpot's Game Of The Year, actually. :P

Some of the game up there seem like strange choices. Tabula Rasa, Manhunt 2, Hellgate, Heavenly Sword? I don't think any of them really stuck out as GOTY material, especially compared to some other games (including games strangely absent from the vote)

Do you think Take 2 (Manhunt 2) and EA (Hellgate and Tabula Rasa) pulled an Eidos and somehow got to GameSpot? :P

Shit, I didn't even look at what was actually on the list really.  That's a tragedy.  If there was any doubt that all journalistic integrity has evacuated this publication, there need be no more discussion about it.

If I had an email address to write to, I would.  I'd just like to hear what fucking explanation they try to come up with for such crap.

How in the world is Halo 2 up as a nomination this year?  Sure, it was new on the PC, but the game came out a couple years ago!

Well, UT3 is on the 360 and PS3 I believe. Still the PC one is the best ;)

My vote went for Crysis. Just finished it and I'm going through it again! Awesome game.

I want to vote for Assassin's Creed, but that's probably going to be my 2008 GOTY since I'm waiting for the PC release :P

If it wasn't for Crysis, Bioshock, or CoD 4 I would probably still be voting for Oblivion!

I checked and t isn't coming to the 360 till next year, which pissed the fanboys off. I think it comes to the PS3 on Dec 10th.

Before checking it out, I thought it would hit the PS3 next year, and the 360 never after glancing at some fanboy rants. Good thing it is coming to the PS3, as it could use some good titles.

I feel that PC gamers are at an advantage either way. If a PC game is released after it console counterpart, it is often released with more polished and better visuals. If one is really lucky, then the game comes with some bonus content.

On the other hand if a PC game comes before, any updates released with the console version are often an easy download away. I realize that console games get updated as well, but not as readily I think?

The Witcher is not even in their selection of 30 candidates! Although there are some games in that list that I'd classify as "WTF is this doing in this list??!" such as NFS ProStreet. The fact that NFSPS is on there completely discredits the list for me.

Crysis is leading at 16% now. I totally didn't expect that.

Also what was up with Gertsmann's hair? For some reason he reminded me of Eric Cartmen pretending to be Hitler.

No way in hell Persona 3 was RPG of the year.  Not even close.  Great game and I love it to death, but no way in hell.  And I sincerely doubt that the Sherlock Holmes game was the best use of a creative license, considering that The Witcher was not only a good use of a creative license, it deserved RPG of the year far, far more than Persona 3.

I don't understand how World in Conflict got "Most Innovative" it's basically Ground Control 2 with a 1980's alternate-history theme. It is a great game, but it's not exactly innovative.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Bioshock should have won the best shooter.  Take into account I've never played the full version of Crysis if you want, but you also have to take into account the fact that my opinion is law.

From what I've played of Bioshock so far, while I love it, I don't find the actual action to be that compelling. But the game is dripping with atmosphere, with great sound and just... oh... its just a sexalicious game. But yea, it would qualify under FPS since it isn't at all an RPG, and I am surprised that it wasn't up there on the list.

Phantom Hourglass was good, and I can't really think of what was better this year on DS off the top of my head...but somehow I don't think it should get GOTY.
