Would this be the Xbox 360’s answer to Heavenly Sword on the PlayStation 3? Probably not, given it is an RPG and not a fighting game first.

What the hell was the point of even saying that?

Seriously, that's pretty stupid comment.  Also, I wonder how many people are looking forward to this.  Jade seemed pretty reviled in certain circles.  Julia says it's the first game she ever played, tried to like, and completely, utterly hated.

Yeah, to be honest I liked it a lot when I first played it for Xbox.  I then went back and tried to play it again and really didn't like it at all.  It wasn't even that I was bored of it or anything, it's just that when I actually thought about it everything seemed so stupid.

That's what she said.  She went on and on about how there were all these things you could do and little character building elements, but none of them changed anything and it all seemed completely pointless in the end.  And she said the story was derivative and boring, if I remember right.  I never gave it a shot for some reason.

I was really disappointed. I really tried to like it, and gave it six or seven hours. but found myself quite frustrated with the skin deep combat. In terms of action I felt you could really play only one way, and would get toasted upon trying something remotely different. You had to adapt yourself to one successful formula, and it was frustrating if you didn't like it. I thought the system overall was extremely amateur and probably the worse I've come across.

If Bioware intend to develop Jade Empire 2, I think they need to find a good Japanese development team to handle the combat. Whereas interface, controls, polish, camera angles and logical game mechanics seem second nature to American/European developers, it is the Japanese who seem to be able to put together fighters with ease. While Shenmue was a really crappy title, that sunk in its own pile of overblown hype, it had a solid combat system.

It is a pity that I was so turned off by the game mechanics of JE, because Bioware are my favorite development team, and I've finished all their games (except Jade Empire) many times. I hear it has a good story too.

One other issue it had aside from the horrid combat system was the severe consilitis it suffered from. Unlike any other Bioware game, the world was extremely restrictive and overly simplistic. While there was plenty of great dialog and storytelling, there was little depth in looting, and modifying character stats. It often felt more like an action adventure than an action RPG.

I guess I should have played it when it came out. When I finally got to play it on the PC, it was a title older than KOTOR, and it showed.

Wow, I must be in the minority here...
I actually really liked Jade Empire (PC) completely.

I thought the PC controls were fine and the story was pretty good.

I think the thing I liked about it the first time was that the setting and enviroment were new and fresh for the most part.  The second time I believe I realized that the combat and story just blew.

I've never played this it didn't really appeal to me.
I do remember not wanting to play KotoR again I tried after finishing it on the good side but couldn't get very far. I hope the same doesn't happen for Mass Effect.

I enjoyed it, but it is one of those games you just play once, maybe twice, but not more.

Jade Empire was my game of the year back in 05.
It was pretty close for me. I was playing it on the Xbox and just really enjoyed that I was much more in control of my character (especially when dodging) rather than relying heavily on a digital dice toss. I think that's why the game turned out a little too easy. I played it on the hardest difficulty as well and it was still barely challenging. I was dodging and jumping around like frickin' monkey on a rampage! As soon as I acquired the Leaping Tiger style the game got even easier.

Joystiq -> Ex-Bioware employee claims to have worked on Jade Empire 2 in 2006 and 2007.

Dammit - I'm still waiting for a Jade Empire 2!  :-[

I really hope once things maybe settle down at Bioware for a bit, this might get finished, they re-work what they've got, or just start over. I really want JE2, dammit!

With Dragon Age 3 talk already, Mass Effect 3 is around the corner, and SWTOR in the making still, it looks like it won't be soon...

Please make it happen soon, Bioware - we want Jade 2.

Quote
BioWare is busy, but it hasn't forgotten about its diamond in the rough, 2005's Jade Empire -- the company is "just looking for the right way to deploy it," co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk said at Eurogamer Expo 2011. Muzyka said BioWare is passionate about Jade Empire because it's an IP, and fans may see something from its universe "in the near future."

This is consistent with BioWare's previous proclamations of Jade Empire love, when Mike Laidlaw called it a "staff favorite" in 2009. Laidlaw said BioWare didn't have anything to announce at that time, a sentiment echoed by Muzyka this week -- we may have to wait another two years to see what exactly this new non-announcement means, or to get another vague, nostalgic claim about Jade Empire.
