Basically, SC got updated to V 1.15.2.

But now, you can officially play the game w/out a CD, if you install the patch and then follow the below directions from Blizz's site on how to do so.

How can I play the game without the CD in my CD drive?


First, please make sure that you have the latest patch installed.  You can either connect to Battle.net to download the patch automatically, or you download the patch manually from here.

Once the game is patched, please use the following instructions for your operating system.

Windows Users:
- Make sure you have "Hide extensions for known types" unchecked under Explorer Folder Options.
- If you own only StarCraft, copy "INSTALL.EXE" from the StarCraft CD to your StarCraft folder and rename it to "StarCraft.mpq".
- If you own StarCraft: Brood War, copy "INSTALL.EXE" from the StarCraft: Brood War CD to your StarCraft folder and rename it to "BroodWar.mpq".

Mac users:
- If you own only StarCraft, copy "StarCraft Archive" from the StarCraft CD to your StarCraft folder.
- If you own StarCraft: Brood War, copy "Brood War Archive" from the StarCraft: Brood War CD to your StarCraft folder.

I confirm that it works.  Just a note... Even if you have Brood War and copy the file for that, you'll need to do it for Starcaft too if you want to play the original campaign.

In other news, I got all this working on my Linux laptop.  Unfortunately, if I try to play the game fullscreen using the default open-source "ati" video driver, there are these huge black bars on the screen in 2 places.  I tried getting and installing ATI's "fglrx" driver, but it turns out it currently only supports series 9xxx and higher.  My laptop has a Radeon Mobility 7500.  So that sucks.

But I can play it in windowed mode.

Someone gave me a burned copy of Starcraft in like '99 or '00 when I totally wasn't into PC games at all.  I tried to install it, but it asked for a CD key and I didn't know how to handle that problem.  The solution?  I probably palmed the number pad, filling the input area with number pads 4 times before it worked.

About 18 months ago I installed it on my roomate's laptop.  Same thing, but it worked the second time.

Wow.  Interesting.

This removal of the CD check is kind of unusual.  The install.exe files it asks you to copy to your hard drive and rename are pretty huge.  Almost 600 MB each.

I'm guessing it has something to do with the game having no option to do a full install... the CD always spun up when there was character speech or a video.
