New Microsoft OS?
« on: Friday, January 18, 2008, 09:54:33 AM »
That's pretty fast.

Could be something like Win 2000 though, but hopefully not. The only people who should be angry about this are the five who actually bought Vista.

*cares*

I can't see myself switching for any reason other than buying a new computer, which isn't going to happen anytime soon.

It is odd hat they would push forward the next 'major' release for windows when SP1 isn't even out yet of Vista. I didn't think Vista was so broken that a SP couldn't fix it?!

LOL @ five who actually bought Vista.

My big question, though: are there any games already announced that will be exclusives to only Windows Next OS??? :P

Meh.  Whatever.  I'm sticking with XP until there's actually a real reason to switch, which there never will be other than "We're forcing you".  I hope they lose all their money and die poor.

This might be a good thing, because a 2009 release means that it's possible to skip over Vista entirely.   Not only possible, outright desirable (assuming this "Windows 7" is actually an improvement).

That was my first thought too. I can definitely stick out with XP for another year or two.

I've been using Vista on my work laptop and it is pretty broken. The stupid DWM (Desktop Window Manager, which gives Vista the Aero glass look along with the window animations) eats up about 100mb, which is so not worth it in my view. I just switch to the Standard or Classic look. Sure it's old-fashioned but it saves a fair amount of wasted resources.

Speaking of which, does anybody know if we can use XP Visual styles to skin Vista's "Standard" visual style?

The good note is that almost every crash or error I get in Vista also gives me a message saying "Microsoft is aware of this error and it will be addressed in the upcoming service pack 1." Based on that and user/blogger reactions SP1 is supposedly the "saviour" patch!

Frankly, I'd rather just avoid the mess altogether and perhaps hop on to the next big thing. So fingers crossed on this Windows 7 thing!

I've got Vista on my laptop, and while it certainly isn't impressive it isn't exactly broken either.  Granted, I'm not using it for much more than internet browsing and office tasks.

I switched a few weeks ago and I really like Vista. I don't think it is worth the money if you have XP, but I think it is definitely faster and easily more stable. I've expereinced almost zero in the way of crashes or compatibility issues. I especially like the update system.

Vista has some great ideas, but I still feel it's "not quite there yet." In my experience it is way less stable than XP; Explorer keeps crashing (it doesn't like you to visit certain folders), it has a few minor issues with some applications too.

I have a few cosmetic issues with it as well: I can't stand the new start menu.. I hate scrolling in menus and I don't want the Classic start menu, I just want the XP start menu but that's not an option.. Or at least the Vista start menu but with an "All Programs" menu like XP or Classic.

One more thing is the icons. I like the 32x32 icon size but that's only am option on the Desktop by selecting "Classic icons" in the view menu. It is not an option in folders or Explorer view however. Icons are either too big or too small. I don't realyl understand why they'd remove the option. It's not exactly complicated.

The other cosmetic issue is wallpapers.. They added a few cool features but they apparently removed some too. For example, if an image is larger than your display you can no longer Centre it. It has to be resized (with proportion), stretched, or tiled.

I guess Vista is only worthwhile if you buy a new computer and it happens to be on it, otherwise it's just not worth it.

Personally, I don't even think XP is as stable as it should be.  So obviously our opinions on Vista are going to differ rather widely.  I wouldn't say that I'd never use another Microsoft OS, I just expect to get an actual reason to switch.  Vista offers me exactly zero reasons, but not only that, several negatives that make it seem even less attractive than just sticking with what I've got.  If they do another version of Windows after Vista, I'll check it out when it releases and see what gives, but I expect it to be far beyond the pile of crap Vista is.

Also, if the next version turns out to actually be worth switching to, I think all Vista users should throw a giant fit and demand their money back.

Hehe they're just gonna play it like Windows ME :P

I think the this new Windows will be to Vista as XP Pro was to Win2000. They were also about 2 years apart.
