So I cut my finger
« on: Tuesday, February 26, 2008, 10:29:29 PM »
I cut my finger tonight making a delicious snack. Just for the record - slice up some fresh tomatoes, put on some fresh mozzarella (the kind you buy in the gourmet cheese section - comes in a ball) and top with a little fresh basil. Then douse with balsamic vinaigrette.  It is oh so good.

So anyways, I'm cutting up the mozzarella, which has come infused with basil and other spices, and I slice too hard and cut my finger to shit. Problem is, there was basil on the knife (which I just got for Christmas and are really sharp) and the basil gets into my wound. I wash it out but some of the basil which is deep in won't wash out.

Pic: WARNING: Somewhat graphic. Contains a cut finger.

See the basil near the back? I don't know how to get it out without digging around with a needle. Which just seems terrible. Any suggestions?

I don't know.  Does that skin flap fold all the way back?  If it does, you're probably going to lose it anyway.  Peel it back and wash real well.  (Hurts just to think about it.)  Need disinfectant in there.  It may seem overkill to see a doctor, but infection can be nasty.  Gotta kill the germs.  It should heal OK if you can prevent infection.

No, it only folds about halfway back. I held it back as I washed it out but it only helped so much. I'm thinking of waiting to see how bad it becomes before going to the doctor.

Organic splinters and basically what you have inside your finger right now are pretty much the worse thing you can have in a healing wound.  You'd be better off with a chunk of metal because as the basil breaks down inside your body, it'll provide a food source for the staph bacteria or whatever the hell else is on it. That bitch gets sealed in there and it's pretty much the perfect environment for that shiznit.  Although I personally wouldn't recommend any doctor visits or topical anti-biotic (those motherfuckers love handing out anti-bios like they get off on doing it) unless you actually really need them (look for the insane redness) since broad and narrow band resistant bacteria aren't good for anyone.

With thorns and wood slivers they usually eventually get pushed out by the body naturally, but this is quite a bit different.  What you could try (which is really good for tiny softwood splinters that can't be pulled out and might not get pushed out) is to mix some water and about half a teaspoon of baking soda into a sort of thick paste, put that shit on it, and cover it up.  Hopefully in the morning or the next day (you might have to do it twice) that bitch will come out.

Also, since it's a pretty wide cut, could you not just submerge it in water and swish it around, hoping for the basil to just float off?

PS: Don't go to the doctor.

I'll try the water thing, but I doubt that it will work. The wound is pretty sealed up. Apparently my blood is very coagulative (not a word, I know). I'm thinking of getting a needle and some whiskey and just going to work on it tomorrow. Gonna hurt like a bitch but its better than nothing.

I would just burn a needle and dig it out and then put hydrogen peroxide on it.

Yeah - see it on my middle finger?

I did manage to completely kill the skin. Also, it was very fucking painful at points. But it didn't cost me money. And that's what really matters.

ah, nice work.  I thought the middle finger was another smaller cut from the knife at first.  You did what I would have done, although I'm not sure about the whiskey. Now all you'll have to do is keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't get infected.

The scotch was kind of auxiliary. But it didn't hurt.

I put some antiseptic on it. It should be fine.

My finger cut beats yours (actually a thing called a Pyogenic Granuloma). The doctor described it as arterial like bleeding, it was sick. Google it for pics, but after cauterization pictures I can provide.

Google for pics? "Ren's cut finger"? Provide pics or your "cut" just isn't real.

You: -1

It looked pretty much exactly like this before it was cauterized. The after cauterization picture I have and will upload in a sec.

Here's another

Warning: that picture is totally inappropriate and involves flesh being removed from a finger. Nobody yell at me for posting it.

A friend of mine cut off his finger a year or so ago.  Well, half of his thumb actually (at the knuckle).  Apparently, it was pretty fucked.

Once I smashed the tip of my left middle finger in a door jamb.  We're talking about one of those steel fire doors with a steel frame.  There was probably less than a 5mm gap between the door and its frame and the door latched.

Imagine smashing the end of a hot dog with a hammer.  That's what it looked like.  Sometimes it hurts bad if I hit it a certain way and I don't have feeling in part of it.  Other than that and it looking a little funny, it's fine now.  Still have the fingernail and everything (which I was told I would most certainly lose forever).

I did the same thing to my right index finger, in a car door.  Splat.  Maybe not 5 mm.  Thank God for American-car tolerances.  This was in the early 70s, and when I touch the tip of both index fingers with my thumbs, the right one still feels different, a bit strange.
