Since Trent is NO LONGER bound to any record label anymore, he's now released a collection of stuff called "Ghosts: Volume 1" for FREE downloads.
They're all instrumentals.
And they will be spanned over FOUR Volumes, for downloads.
NO DRM protection or anything.

Nine Inch Nails presents Ghosts I - IV, a brand new 36 track instrumental collection available right now. Almost two hours of new music composed and recorded over an intense ten week period last fall, Ghosts I - IV sprawls Nine Inch Nails across a variety of new terrain.

Trent Reznor explains, "I've been considering and wanting to make this kind of record for years, but by its very nature it wouldn't have made sense until this point. This collection of music is the result of working from a very visual perspective - dressing imagined locations and scenarios with sound and texture; a soundtrack for daydreams. I'm very pleased with the result and the ability to present it directly to you without interference. I hope you enjoy the first four volumes of Ghosts."

EDIT:
Quote
This music arrived unexpectedly as the result of an experiment. The rules were as follows: 10 weeks, no clear agenda, no overthinking, everything driven by impulse. Whatever happens during that time gets released as... something.

The team: Atticus Ross, Alan Moulder and myself with some help from Alessandro Cortini, Adrian Belew and Brian Viglione. Rob Sheridan collaborated with Artist in Residence (A+R) to create the accompanying visual and physical aesthetic.

We began improvising and let the music decide the direction. Eyes were closed, hands played instruments and it began. Within a matter of days it became clear we were on to something, and a lot of material began appearing. What we thought could be a five song EP became much more. I invited some friends over to join in and we all enjoyed the process of collaborating on this.

The end result is a wildly varied body of music that we're able to present to the world in ways the confines of a major record label would never have allowed - from a 100% DRM-free, high-quality download, to the most luxurious physical package we've ever created.

More volumes of Ghosts are likely to appear in the future.

- Trent Reznor, March 2, 2008

EDIT:
If you want ALL four volumes of "Ghosts," you'll have to pay for them.
They will eventually also be coming out on disc for purchase it looks like, too.

sweet!

going to check this out now and i'll post opinions soon.

edit - paid for the two cd set plus download, but unfortunately their servers are fucked. it's a one time only download link and it stopped at 174K. most irritating. went to the piratebay, and from the comments section, it looks like the majority of paying customers are resorting to torrents at the moment. ah well, not ideal, but as long as i get my music, i don't mind.

I get a blank screen, and "Done" on the browser's status bar.  This happens with both FF and IE.

Edit:  Oh, it's a bad link D.  Typo on the url tags, looks like.

Edit:  The download site is down, but you can get it through a (legit) torrent.  (Funny that it was released through thepiratebay.)

Unfortunately, the Ghosts I-IV site is down for the next few hours for maintenance.

We quietly released this album last night without any warning, and without any press. Because we know how devoted our fans are, we planned for an overwhelming response, and expected heavy traffic. To our surprise, the traffic was more than three times what we anticipated, and has only been getting heavier throughout the day. The response has been absolutely phenomenal, and we couldn't be happier, but our servers have taken a beating, causing numerous problems with the download site. Our developers, who have been working non-stop to combat the surge of traffic, feel that taking the site down for a few hours to fix some crucial issues is the best way to get things running smoothly again. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

While the site is down, you can still purchase the complete Ghosts I-IV here from Amazon's MP3 store for only $5. The MP3s are high quality and DRM-free. You can also order the deluxe and limited edition packages from Artist in Residence.

If you're familiar with BitTorrent, you can download Ghosts I, the first of the four volumes, for free, from our official upload at The Pirate Bay.

If you ordered a download and have not yet been able to retrieve it or have experienced any technical difficulties with the download, your download link will work as soon as the site returns.

Thanks again for the amazing support, and your continuing patience. Watch nin.com for updates during the downtime.

Ya ya!

The music is maybe atmospheric?  Strange, but their stuff often is.

Check the order page. $300 box set is sold out of 2,500 copies.

$750,000? Nice.

And holy shit at that package. It has the music on vinyl (4 "disc"..heh), a 2CD set, 2 DVDs with the entire thing in separated .wav tracks for easy remixing, the whole thing on freaking Blu Ray high quality audio, and 2 photo books. Plus each one is numbered and signed by Reznor, plus once you place the order you don't even have to wait for it to arrive...they gave you links to download it in lossless formats and a PDF full of stuff.

God damn, thats just amazing.

i'm liking this. really cool ambient stuff which is nowhere near as imposing as most of nin's back catalogue. stand out track for me so far is 16, just because when you're playing the entire thing, it completely jumps out at you. for the time being, this is my soundtrack for sins of a solar empire.

It seems like NIN and Radiohead are moving the entire industry forward. It is clear that the old system no longer works, however much the industry execs want to push it. I love it.

I've never been a big NIN fan but based on the comments I think that I will give it a try.

I wonder how much shipping costs for that thing...

God, even the $5 deal (for a download) and $10 deal (For the download AND the 2CD's shipping to you) sounds damn good. How much is shipping??

EDIT:
On Trent's NIN MySpace, he got some of the non-Volume 1 tracks on there playing that are not for free downloading.

Track 19 Ghosts III is freakin' awesome.

Well, it looks like all the tracks are under a Creative Commons license, so if you wanted to be a bastard you can legally download the entire thing.

I'm liking the first 9 tracks. Gonna download the rest and see how much I like them. Might go with the $10 2CD deal if I enjoy the rest.

To answer my own question, the answer is "Yes" to this.

Ghosts Vol. 1 - 4 go on sale at retail stores this Tues (April 8, 2008) as a 2-disc set.

BB and CC are selling it for $9.99 this week, on sale.
