All I wonder is when Sims 2 will stop having expansions and fully support only Sims 3?
And when will Sims 2: Complete Collection come out so I can gobble that up? :P

I'll only express any interest in the vanilla Sims 3 and none of its subsequent expansions.

I got the new issue of GFW previewing Sims 3 info and whatnot.

Here's some things to note from it.

1. The focus is more on a WHOLE COMMUNITY than say one household.
Example:
--You can ruin your Sims' working career if you go out Downtown and say run into your boss, but embarrass yourself in public

2. ALL Sims in an entire community ALL age at the same time

3. Attribute bars been chopped down from EIGHT to now THREE.

4. Expect "less grinding"
Note: So, there will be less cleaning-up after yourself, less bathroom usage, less sleeping, etc etc.

5. Personality sliders are replaced w/ around 80 "traits" to choose from to give your character their own "personality."
Note: "Traits" are a lot like "perks" from the "SPECIAL" system in Fallout or what is used in the GURPS system.

6. Your starting area is Pleasant Valley, a huge ever-changing town.
Some locations here -- a park, science lab, bookstore, bistro, clothing stores, etc etc.

7. A little more control at work, even though you really don't do the work portion of the game.
New options: you can make your character leave early, work late/do overtime, etc etc.

8. More options w/ social chatter w/ Sims.
Meaning -- you have two different menus, so you can pursue a Sim for "just friendship" or for "more than friendship." (unlike Sims 2, where the more you talk, you can only open up "flirty dialogue.")

9. More depth to the "painting feature" (that was in Sims 2).

I honestly doubt that I'll ever care.  I think I'm pretty much done with this series forever, no matter what innovations they make.

I think the only thing that might revive my interest in something like The Sims is if I can play it like NWN.. Namely, if I can attack things and complete quests.

And thus the game loses any of the hardcore RTS attributes that Will Wright designed, and slowly inches towards becoming more of a Barbie simulator.

Here are my predictions for the best selling PC games of all of 2009, from the NPD.

1. The Sims 3
2. The Sims 3: Expansion 4
3. The Sims 3: Expansion 3
4. The Sims 2: Expansion 25
5. The Sims 2: Expansion 24
6. The Sims 2: Collection
7. The Sims Collection
8. The Sims 3: Expansion 2
9. The Sims 3: Expansion 1
10. Duke Nukem Forever

Sims 3 has so far been downloaded over 180,000 b/t May 18th and 21st alone!
Right now at that rate, it's ready to out-pace Spore.

Quote
Sims 3 Already Downloaded 180,000 Times
Piracy of half-finished, "buggy" version outpacing Spore.
By Kat Bailey, 05/28/2009

Pirates are getting an early jump on Sims 3. With several days still to go before the title hits retailers, Bloomberg (via GameDaily) is reporting that it's been downloaded 180,000 times between May 18 and 21. And it's it not even the finished version.

"The pirated version is a buggy, pre-final build of the game," said Electronic Arts representative Holly Rockwood. "It's not the full game. Half the world -- an entire city -- is missing from the pirated copy."

These numbers come courtesy of BigChampagne, a company that monitors file sharing. They outpace even Spore, which was downloaded 400,000 times over the course of three weeks and eventually went on to be the most pirated game of 2008. The high download numbers were attributed to Spore's digital rights management software, which is absent in Sims 3.

"That's the nature of the business these days," said Pacific Crest Securities analyst Evan Wilson. "PC games are available before they are released. That's an issue they have been dealing with for some time."

The final version of Sims 3 is due June 2. We'll see if the high piracy rate continues after that.

It really sucks that it's being pirated so much. I sort of hoped that even with the leak it wouldn't be as bad as Spore, just so EA would see that heavy DRM pisses off and drives away some legitimate customers.

What would be interesting is to find out how many people who are downloading it illegally are planning on purchasing a legit copy, but "just couldn't wait."

A lot of it may also have to do with the fact that it's a throwaway game for a lot of people.  Many are probably curious to tinker with it for an hour or two but no longer, and they aren't going to pay for the privilege.  Then there are others who hate how EA pumps out expansion after expansion, sucking them dry.  Some people have abandoned them entirely because of that behavior, or simply begun pirating the games because they're tired of paying out the ass to get a complete experience.

I'm pretty indifferent.  2 didn't interest me in the least after playing with it for an hour or so (waste of money), and I haven't looked at a single Sims product since.  In fact, my level of respect for Will Wright has kind of gone way down in the last while.  I think we may have fooled ourselves into thinking that he was more of a genius than he really is.

I fully expect the number of illegal downloads to increase over previous years given the economy. People just don't have the money that they used to.

It doesn't matter what excuses we come up with, but PC games will always get pirated because they are so easy to pirate. DRM, no DRM, EA, no EA... it really doesn't matter if it is a more business minded company like EA, or a more customer oriented like Stardock. People will pirate PC games because they can. The only games that sell more copies consistently are games that that require some sort of persistent internet connection like MMOs or L4D.

Hell, a game that kinda tanked on sales like Demigod (went from 3 to out of the top 10 in a week) was pirated up to its ass, so imagine what a more popular franchise like The Sims has to deal with.

Most core gamers just pirate anyway, and it is the more casual crowd that are intimidated by torrenting, that make games like The Sims a success. I mean really, how many guys who surf the internets for gaming news are actually interested in buying The Sims?

Anyway, I saw the video review at IGN for The Sims 3, and it does look quite nice.

Man I hate to say it but I don't really do a ton of gaming on the PC any more.  A game of Civ IV every now and then but it's mostly console and handhelds right now.

But it's like...if i want to check a gamefaq, facebook, e-mail, look up info on a game, etc etc i've got to either wait or ask her nicely.  Sometimes asking nicely works hehe.
