GSpot likes Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
« on: Saturday, March 08, 2008, 05:43:05 PM »
What a surprise!

Quote
But no matter whether you're a diehard Smash Bros. fanatic or a neophyte brawler, you'll be pleased to know that Super Smash Bros. Brawl includes a plethora of impressive characters, features, and game modes, and is more accessible and fun than ever before.

Meaning that now it's actually accessible and fun instead of stupid and frustrating?

It was always accessible; you're just stupid.

Says you.  I think it's like a Mac - it's supposed to be simple and easy to understand, but I've spent so long out of the realm of simplicity that I can't even comprehend it.

Huh. I never really thought of it like that. It makes sense on some level. Still, it's not like you haven't or don't play games that are relatively simple to get into.

True, but I don't usually get thrown into those against people who've been playing them for 10+ years.  There may be only two buttons, but I still don't really get what they do.

If I could find a Wii somewhere, I'm tempted to just buy it and the game so I can actually compete.

Both of the first two games were great. The first one was easier to get into than the second, but I wouldn't say that either was frustrating or stupid. The first continues to be one of my favorite fighting games ever made. Me and my friend used to have really intense, high level games that were just tons of fun.

This game is one of the reasons that I really want to get a Wii.

So I picked it up at midnight and sat down with some friends and played it.  I just stopped.  It was incredibly fun.  Everything seemed just pitch perfect.  I was excited to play as the non-first party players, but it looks like you've got to open them up first.  So far, only opened up 3 characters.  Buh.
I had forgotten how terribly addicting this game can be.  A simple little match turned into a best out of 5...to a best out of 7...to a best out of 20.  Between Marth and Ike.  "Last match, I swear." became the motto of the night.
So, I can't wait to play again.

The first one is by far the better of the two.  I thought the stages in the second one were far too big, and they nerfed Kirby hardcore (though I suppose he deserved it).

I just wish the visuals in the first were a little better.  They are extremely rudimentary.

Controller comparison

They actually liked the Wii remote sideways the most.

The music is amazing so far.  I'm on the 5th track of like 312.  There's a torrent out there with all the music ripped from the game disc.  I won't post a link because of our policies.  It should be easy to find.  It weighs in at about a GB.  Those with the game shouldn't even feel guilty.  I'll most likely end up buying it myself.  I'm not a big brawler fan, but this is special, particularly for the game-starved Wii.  I know my kids will be getting it as well, and I'll need to practice for next time I visit.

. . . and here's the backlash to the backlash.  This I loved.

That was some of his best stuff in quite a while.
Absolutely hilarious.

Especially about the 360 being the cat pissing itself and dying.

Well, I'm sold.  I picked this game up a bit ago and popped it in today... and it's fun as bloody hell, it really is.  It's hilarious in all the right ways, ridiculous in all the right ways, and while I already did manage to confirm at last OWmeet that yes, it can actually be good fun with a group... apparently it's also good fun by yourself.  There's just so much to do and unlock, which extends games like this in crazy ways, that  you could play this for ages.  And the characters all look and move fantastically... it's a joy to execute a crazy move into a group of other dudes, then pause and swing the camera around.  It's a shame the game's resolution isn't higher, as there are a lot of jaggies happening, but it's still pretty amazing to see some of the details.  Samus in particular is ridiculously detailed in the zero suit, more than I was ever able to appreciate just mashing buttons at a friend's house.  It's a pretty beefy piece of work.

So I guess I'm officially a Smash convert.  All hail Nintendo.
