Didn't mention it, because it was a last-minute impromptu decision.  My younger daughter was doing her first communion (Catholic ritual) and due to money issues, I was not going to go.  But I couldn't bear the thought, so off I drove to NY on Friday night, and I got there at 5:30 AM Saturday, shortly before lights started to go on in the house.  This was a major formal affair, so I'm glad I brought a suit.  I would have been the only guy in church without one.  The mass was LONG.  Then a whole mess of family came to a party for her at her aunt's.  I saw more of them this one day than all of Christmas break.

I drove back today, and got here about an hour ago.  Sometimes those 10-11 hours feel like a normal commute anymore.  If only gas weren't fricking $4.10/gal for premium in NY, it might become routine.  But damn, am I tired.  I'm surprised I stayed coherent long enough to type this.  (Did I?)  I'm going to bed soon.  I wanted to get some GTA4 in when I got here, but that's not going to happen.  I'll be back tomorrow.  Night!  *ugh*

Welcome back! First Communions are always a good time to celebrate. There were about 10-15 getting theirs last Saturday during mass.

Also, why are you buying premium gas?

Welcome back, man.  Glad to hear you were gone... it means maybe you'll only be 1/3 of the game ahead of me in GTA4.  =D  Hope you had a decent time... get some rest!

But damn, yeah I don't know if I would have driven a '95 Mustang Cobra to NY.  Even if not for premium gas prices, for the miles.

It's got low miles for its age.  From 71K and change it went up to 72K and change.  2200 RPM in overdrive at 74 mph, getting 27 mpg.  Loafing, just loafing.  I do need new wiper blades, though.  I had a bunch of bug splats on the way back, and then it rained hard for about 15 seconds.  (That was weird, like one rain cloud on a blue sky.)  The wipers smeared the paste, and then they were sort of bouncing along leaving vertical marks, not doing anything useful.  The washer fluid wasn't making it up very high because of the wind, so I had to wait for a place where I could slow down enough.  Then it got clean enough to see, but still smeary.  It didn't help that I was driving straight West late in the afternoon.

Premium is actually my fault.  The car has a mechanical distributor, and I advanced the timing.  I really should pull it back a few degrees.  It has great throttle response and low end, but it pings at high RPM sometimes, which is not good.  I think it happens when the engine gets hotter.  The thermostat on this thing really is set too high, and that I don't know how to deal with myself.  It has an electric fan to boot (controlled by the thermostat) so the engine temp goes up beyond ideal in slow traffic, unless I turn on the air conditioner.  The fan runs continuously if you use the AC, and the car's cooling system is hefty enough that the AC doesn't phase it.  How's that for strange--cooler running engine if you use the AC.

Maybe new ones do?  I always used it, but that wasn't economically challenging when I got the car 12 years ago.  (The car itself will turn 13 in July.)

I left a message on their answering machine as I headed out the door close to 7 PM on Friday.  My ex didn't get it until 11 PM, and by then the girls were asleep.  So it was a surprise to them.  Yes, the little one was very excited and vocal.  My older one is more sedate.  :)

Heh, long drive. I know how it is. With our family mainly in northern MN we have to drive 12 hours for family functions. Sadly we have to miss a graduation this month so we can afford to go to the family reunion in July. Gas prices suck.

I've always heard that this was somewhat of a myth with high powered cars.  There would obviously always be benefits for any car running a higher octane fuel,but having to run premium was just a cross investing scam.    And by 'always heard' I mean like three hippies have told me that and they at least sounded like they knew what they were talking about.

I heard that once you go premium you can't go back because it will hurt your engine.

I think that's false.  Cars with a high compression ratio need higher octane to keep the gasoline from combusting prior to the spark, just from the compression itself.  Does the 5.0 in the 1995 Cobra have a high enough compression ratio that premium is needed?  I don't know the answer to that, but in 2003 they threw on a supercharger and that most definitely needs premium.

Yes they do.  I'm going to my niece's graduation in Des Moines, which is almost as far as NY the other way.  This time I'm tagging along with my brother and my mom, though, and not in my car.  It will be the first time I go visit my sister's house, and she's been there a lot of years.  I hate the idea of another long round trip, but I really have no good reasons to stay away, and more than one to go.

The 95 SVT Mustang Cobra has 9.0:1 compression.  I looked it up.  That's not too high to run on regular, I don't think, but the timing needs to be milder, or I'm going to burn a hole through a piston.

Maybe it's all in my head, but even before reading any of this thread I always thought I noticed a distinct lack of power with regular as opposed to premium in my Mustang.  Mine's the same as yours Cobra, except a '94.  I mean, it's nothing major but I swear you lose a couple horses with regular.

They're finicky beasts.  Seat of the pants can't compare to dynamometers, but I can sometimes tell the difference from one tank of gas to another.  I stopped using Shell entirely at one time.  Much later, I found out that Ohio doesn't regularly test the quality of gas anywhere, so chances are it was the fault of the one particular gas station, rather than Shell Oil. 

The biggest killjoy is letting the engine idle in heavy traffic.  It's so quick when it's cool, then it gets noticeably softer just after getting out of the traffic.  Running it on the highway for a bit cures that.  It just needs to move more air.  The computer triggers the electric fan too late.  (It's not the thermostat as I said before.)  The computer can't be reprogrammed, only superseded with another, through the service port.  That's done all the time by performance nuts, and I came very close to doing it myself, for this reason and for a better timing curve.  Ford's is too mild, and they deliberately pull spark back based on speed, which is why cranking the distributor 4-6 degrees works as well as it does.  Engine tech has moved so far past this, though.  Everyone has a race engine anymore.  Unless I'm going to go all-out, meaning tons of money, it's not worth the effort at this point.  It was fun, though it could never touch my much lighter '85 GT with the same engine, better cam and pistons, and a massaged Holley 4-barrel carb.  That was a dizzying quick car.

Speaking on the topic of boycotting a gas brand, I once read an article that said that branded gas stations don't necessarily have that gas... they are just under contract to purchase some certain amount of gas from that company.

Think about it.  There is a fuel company called Lykins oil.  There aren't any Lykins gas stations I've ever seen anyplace.

Edit:  I just read something that contradicts this, so I don't know what to believe.

What's more, your local Chevron station may sell gas refined by Shell or Exxon Mobil. Suppliers share pipelines, so they all use the same fuel. And the difference between the most expensive brand-name gas and the lowliest gallon of no-brand fuel? Often just a quart of detergent added to an 8,000-gallon tanker truck.

Wow Cobra, I never knew you knew so much about cars.  I know generally what the things are you're talking about, but an engine compartment is pretty much an alien world to me.  Or at the very least a museum exhibit, not to be touched.

If this was a class, I'd get an A in the lecture and a D in the lab.  :)  I understand it all fairly well, but other than easy stuff, I'd do more harm than good under the hood.  K&N air filter element replacement--cake.  Timing light and and a wrench--just watch your fingers. 

That reminds me.  When I first heard of the intentional power nerfing over 100 mph, I about hit the roof.  I did something very stupid.  I used a stack of wooden boards to drive one tire up higher so I could squeeze under the fender skirt and yank out the computer speed sensor from the back of the transmission.  That had the intended effect of preventing the speed bomb from triggering, but unfortunately, it also made the "Check Engine" idiot light come on and stay on after a short while.  I drove it that way until next time I had to worry about the e-check inspection.  Tampering with sensors can cause legal hassles, even though in this case it had nothing to do with emissions.  By then, I didn't have the fire inside that led me to risk my life, so I took it in to that place I know out Batavia way, and had them reattach the sensor.  I haven't pulled it again since.  I very seldom go more than 80 anyway.

You know, they don't even have to tell you that they're adding ethanol to the gasoline here.  It's not required.  My bet is that as long as it saves them money, all the off-brand "quickie mart" type pumps feed you some ethanol.  Name-brand stations may do it too, for all I know.
