Very favorable from Gamespot as well.

Seems cool enough and I know I'll pick it up eventually, but for now I just can't force myself from DoW for WWII. I know Company of Heroes is an evolution of that, but Warhammer has an iron grip on me these days.

PC Gamer reviewed it...gave it a 96% or something and says its the best RTS ever.

So yeah, its probably a good bet.

Just based on theme, I couldn't care less.  I can guarantee you that I'll never play this because I just... don't care.  Don't know why.  People always tell me how great all the WW2 games are, but I just can't make myself care.  I've tried, believe me.  PC Gamer has long been one of my favorite magazines and where I'd have a job if I could pick anything I wanted to do, and those guys love the wargames in all varieties... but I just can't make myself care.  I just don't.

Oh yeah, bestbuy.com seems to have it available today.  I just looked at Gogamer.com before.

I'm completely unable to find the game on some legally gray sites.

I wish G-Spot had a video review for this one, myself.
I like their video reviews....

So.... I'm not sure I understood. Do you...care...or don't?

I think what Que's getting at is probably exactly what I feel about this game. This is how I feel about it:

This game has gotten absolutely great reviews, which on one hand makes me want to play it big time....

...But on the other hand, this game is set in WW2 -- and quite frankly, I'm sick and tired of the WW2 setting in games. It's just a setting that has been so over-used and over-abused, if you ask me.

Que, is this how you feel about COH?

Y'know, Silent Storm...???

(BTW, anyone played Silent Storm and the expansion?)

I lived with three dudes, two of which played Wolf:ET with me constantly.  We seriously started thanking each other by using the word, "Danke."

The third roommate, not much of a gamer, knew all the voice things really well because he heard them for hours practically every day.  He did a perfect impression of what happens when there is a fierce battle for the flag at the old city in Siwa Oasis:

"They've taken the old city!  We've captured the old city!  We've lost the old city!  We've captured the old city!  They've taken the old city!  We've secured the old city!  Recover the old city!"

 ;D

From the PCG review:

Bottom Line - Not just the greatest WWII RTS ever, but one of the greatest RTS games ever, period.

I still wonder.  I love PCG to absolute death, as I have mentioned many times, but those people have an extreme love of wargames, and I can't help but wonder if that's made them a bit biased in favor of this.  Other reviews don't seem quite so high. Though to be fair, the GSpot review leveled some complaints against the game that seem a little silly depending on your perspective.

Yes I noticed that as well. And sometimes even they have the tendency to overrate stuff. Like Will Harms giving GUN a glowing review. I love Bill's reviews, but I think he was the one who gave Alpha Centauri 98%

The game was excellent, but not 98%.

I also remember them giving the GOTY award to Ghost Recon over Max Payne. I never understood that, but it seems to go with their love for war games.

I'd trust them in their decision to give this 96% because other websites have been glowing as well.

Man I really am feeling the loss of my video card now.

Apparently there's another WW2 themed RTS game that was just released yesterday!

So I spent a few hours with the game. Did about 2 single player missions and a few skirmishes. Here are initial thoughts.

This game may look like Dawn of War with WW2 setting and a new coat of paint but its not. The game is heavily tactical and rewards the players who has his squards run for cover and flanks enemy positions.

First lets examine the differences between CoH and DoW.

CoH almost completly does away with universal upgrades. There is no "Upgrade Armor +1". Your troops become hardened through experience which is nice. Once you upgrade your headquarters, individual squad upgrades are availble like sub-machine guns or panzerfausts.

The "Talent" (I am just calling it talents like WoW because I forgot what they are called in CoH) trees add a new layer to gameplay. You earn talent points by being in combat. Save enough points and you can put them into new skills or upgrade options or even reinforcements. Americans and Germans each have 3 different and distinctive trees they can each go down. The Americans can choose to upgrade the Infantry, Airborne or Armor while the Germans can pick to upgrade their Defense, Offense or Moral.

There are now 3 different resources. The map is split up into several "zones" each with a resource. You MUST have all your zones connected to your HQ or it is considered "out of supply" and will not give you resources. Obviously, this means that you must fortify and guard each of your resource points.

Like I said, the game is much more tactical. Moral is gone, replaced with a "Retreat" option. If your troops come under heavy fire they will become "pinned" and start crawling. This is sort of the equivalent of "Squad broken!". At that point you would retreat your squad out of there as retreating makes your squad faster and give it a defensive bonus. If you don't then your squad will die and you will have to waste more resources getting another.

In DoW, you could charge a fixed defensive emplacement with a mob of troops and come away without a scratch. In CoH you are forced to use flanking tactics or armor to destory bunkers or machine gun nests as they will rip apart infantry.

Armor now hav "hardpoints". This is a great new feature. Tanks have much weaker armor in the rear so flanking tanks will have a definite advantage. Tanks can also have certain parts like their gun, gunner or engine destroyed/killed and will require engineer teams to fix them so they can move again.

Thats all I can think about at work. I'll post further impressions later. It's a GREAT game so far!

I should have kept my mouth shut but you really called me out on this one Keebs. I read something in Kasavin's blog last night about the game and it sold me. Go fig. I lasted a whole day.

So yeah, the game's excellent. Beyond all the nice things said about it already, I should note that this definitelly feels like Relic product from the ground up. I love how DoW manages to capture Warhammer like nothing else has, but CoH has this sort of quiet reverence that you feel in Homeworld... like some sort of authenticity or something. Yeah, it's got loud booms and it gets really amazing when things start to blow up (heavy use of ragdoll in RTS FTW), but something about it feels soft and deep in the details. It's got so many details, but they're not overplayed and they feel just right. The way the infantry talk to eachother or just scream at you in the middle of a firefight is downright amazing and the fact that they'll change responses for different situations is brilliant. The game makes use of the same style of cutscenes that were used in HW2 (slightly static handdrawn images) and they sort of work to ground the game inbetween big events (granted I've only seen a little by now). Overall the game manages to walk that fine line between being totally badass and something sorta thoughtful that I've grown so fond of lately. It's because of that it sorta breaths some life into the whole WWII gaming scene. Ever since MoH:AA opened the flood gates it was always about making the bigger scene. CoH managed to take those big scenes yet make the small stuff matter.

So yeah, Relic has done it again. Now with this and the DoW expansion they pretty much have every RTS angle covered. Go them!

Oh, and will you look at this. Gamespot redid the review. They did by upping the graphics score and upping the game to a 10. Apparently they were affected by a bug that affects SLI setups and causes poor performance.

God I love this game.

I just got done playing an intense multi player game that lasted a good hour. It was a 2 vs 2 and I was playing Axis. We were playing a hedgerow map and we didn't start out too good. We had less territory and almost 4 of my squads were wiped out in one battle thanks to some double teaming and flanking on their end. I had Defensive abilities while my ally had Blitzkrieg abilities. I knew they would hit me soon so I started bulking up on defenses.. I made the area around my HQ a fortress. I told my ally to save keep most of his tanks in check and wait for a counter attack.

They finally came with a mass of infantry and shermans. Oh God it was glorious. I had set up several killing zones with my machine guns but they sent in their armor first. I had eschewed armor in favor of several anti-tank guns and that, along with the mines i had set up and the panzershreks from my grenadiers, just ripped apart their armor. Then the slaughter began as their whole infantry army became pinned almost instantly. The mg42s made short work of them. Then I used my Rocket attack ability to wipe the rest of them out.

Meanwhile my ally sent 4 Panzers and 1 Panther along with several squards of grenadiers to the enemy base which was lightly defended. They did manage to knock out 3 Panzers but by then my infantry had arrived and then it was just a case of mopping up.
Suck it, Pugnate.

All the talk of this game -- makes me want to actually play an RTS....

...Yet, I have Homeworld 1, Homeworld 2, and the entire StarCraft: Battle Chest (which all I have yet to actually play just sitting there doing nothing....gathering dust....I have both HW's installed, yet the SC: Battle Chest hasn't been even installed.

I still should complete what I been working on already first, of course...
