Indy 4 (spoilers)
« on: Friday, May 23, 2008, 11:30:26 PM »
I saw the movie on Thursday and I have to say I'm disappointed. This was nothing like the Indy movies of old, except for a car chase through the jungle, the action was lame and unexciting. A lot of the movie was just stupid and didn't fit in with the Indy universe, surviving a nuclear blast in a fridge? CGI gophers and monkeys? Shia Lebeouf swinging on vines like Tarzan? The end was also very anti-climatic, boring and conventional. This isn't worth seeing in theaters, wait for the DVD.

I'm going to have to go with the complete opposite of everything you said.  I highly enjoyed the movie, yeah there were a couple of parts that were kind of goofy, but all in all it had the spirit of the Indy movies in it.

I just hate his name.  I don't think I've ever seen him in a movie, but what a fucking stupid name.

I'm gonna go with Belmont on this one.  I enjoyed the movie and thought it fit in well with the whole Indy universe.  I did find a few moments to be almost direct copies of events in prior movies, but was willing to look past it all since I thought the movie was pretty entertaining overall.

I do have to complain that the movie was seriously lacking a sexy female costar.

I can't believe anyone would like this movie, let alone Indy fans! Ants building ladders to eat human flesh? "Knowledge" that equals burning someone's eyes alive? I usually respect opinions or at least empathize with them, but anyone who like this movie should've had their ticket checked and promptly escorted to a sound proof basement.

I'm on the fence at the moment.  I thought the first half of the movie was bearable, and felt like an Indy movie, but it degenerated into a CG fest.

That was my take as well.  I went with my mom and brother today.  I was talking to him about it afterwards, and he just couldn't understand all the panning by critics.  Our consensus was that if you like Indy Jones movies at all, you should like this one too.  It was done well, had a good cast, fine performances for the genre, exciting non-stop action with the typical humor thrown in, otherworldly climax, and . . . well, what more do you want?

Yeah, that kid's name sure looks and sounds dumb.  But on the whole, I think he's pretty happy with who he's turned out to be.

I finally saw this. I'm a big Indy fan so I can look past a lot of the "other worldly" things. But...aliens? Fridge nuke? Giant killer ants? Seriously? There is "over the top" and then there is "going too far."

Still I enjoyed the movie for the most part. My major complaint would be the overuse of CG and its extreme obviousness. Everything that looked even remotely dangerous was done in CG and looked fake, so it wasn't nearly as interesting to watch.

Its kind of like how the fights in The Matrix were great to watch compared to the "Burly Brawl" in the sequel. Even if its over the top and impossible without wirework, there is just something about watching real people do stuff. The massive fight in the sequel quickly switched to CG and it was the most boring fight to watch.

I felt the same way watching some of the action sequences here.

While it was a bit too over the top, I did quite enjoy it. I wouldn't watch it again though. It was the sort of movie that you'd watch with at a nice cinema with a good crowd, friends and a bag of popcorn.

Claymation ghosts in boxes?  Faces melting in a hokey, waxy way?  And don't forget "he chose poorly".  Come on.  As I said, if you liked the other movies, this one should pose no problem.  If mystical lore becoming reality or lots of special effects with the available tech bother you, stay away from all of them.

Those were all hokey and over the top, yeah. But...hmmm, don't know how to explain it. Its "myths and legends coming to life"/the occult vs sci-fi. I don't really like sci-fi in my Indy. They did a pretty good job trying to blend them but I just wasn't as into it.

Overall I did like it. I just didn't like it as much as the older films. If they had cut out like 90% of the CG it would have been way better. I don't feel much suspense over a CG jeep on the edge of a CG cliff. Well, maybe if it was less obvious it would have worked.

Thats different, they did the best they could back then, it actually gave the films a type of charming personality. They did what they had to do with what was available to them, in this new movie they just put in whatever the hell they wanted because they could using CGI.

I did see this, this past weekend.

I must say, the action sequences were great -- especially the long jeep scene. Awesome stuff.
The story, not so great -- b/c it feels that there's too much unnecessary stuff there.

Basically, that sounds like a lot of Lucas's movies (first two Star Wars prequels, Phantom Menace and Clone Wars) in recent years, now doesn't it?

Personally, I think the aspect of Indy's son and his ex-girlfriend coming into the picture were way more interesting than say the Area 51 stuff; alien stuff and sci-fi elements; and the cliche Russian type of "wanting more power" enemies.

Regardless, still damn entertaining to watch.

Also, Indy has too many of the good one-liners in the flick.

Heh.  Maybe it's because I think aliens having anything to do with pyramids or big drawings is as much mysticism as witches and warlocks.  The whole idea that human beings were incapable of such works just because they lacked modern tools back then is laughable.

I hate CG in movies a lot of the time and this one looks awful to me.  Not that I'm a huge fan of the originals or anything (only seen a bit here and there... I know, heathen), but this just looks lame.

I liked the originals but thought this was pretty brutal.  I get what you're saying Cobra, and I'm not of the opinion that the originals were masterpieces by any means, but I find it hard to come to terms with how badly they fucked this up.  I can't really explain why, but it just was overdrawn and fucking lame.
