Computer question: How do I put an ISO partition on a USB thumbdrive?
« on: Monday, June 09, 2008, 04:03:02 PM »
See subject. I have one Windows computer, a second computer with no OS and no working optical drive, a bootable ISO installation image, and a USB thumb drive. I need to create a bootable ISO partition on the thumb drive so I can install an OS on the second computer.

I know how to do this in POSIX, but how do I do it in Windows?

OK, I have an idea: GPartEd on a tiny partition on the thumbdrive, next to whatever volume I want to create.

Can GPartEd create partitions from images? Anyone know?

I don't know what you mean about "create partitions from images," but I found a live USB version of gparted.  It'll allow you to boot it and create and delete partitions and whatnot.  However, I think you're hosed on the bit about trying to install something from an ISO on a USB stick.  If you had the ISO unpacked and the files present on the stick like they would appear on a disc, then you might have something with some of the various guides on the Internet on how to make a bootable USB stick.

But what you're trying to do does not seem possible.

Found that already, I'm using it to back up my hard drive.

These guides. You should show me them.

I've done it before, it is in fact easy, but only if you have a Unix-like operating system on hand. Presently, I'm stuck with Windows.

Ok, I think I misunderstood your OP.  I thought you had a ISO file on a USB stick and wanted to make it somehow bootable and auto-mountable, which would never work as far as I know.  Reading it again, I now understand what you are actually trying to do, and yeah, I'm coming up dry for Windows stuff.  Seems easy on Linux.

Edit:  Found this.  Not sure if it's exactly like what you are looking for.

Scott - That guide only applies if you are trying to create a Bart PE image, or you already have a Bart PE image. I have an ISO image, and it can't be altered.

Also - Fucking Microsoft faggots and their broken-ass crippleware.
