From a user review:

Quote
If you can look past the hype and the over enthusiastic claims that this is the "best game ever ever ever" you see this "game" for what it really is… an exercise in excess.

Everything you remember from the previous Metal Gear games is back, bigger and… well bigger anyway.  If you enjoyed previous Metal Gear games but found there were one or two niggling little things that put you off a little, then they'll be there here… only bigger, if you hated the way that the further you got into the game and the story, the less control you actually had over the game, well that's back too… only bigger.

...

These conversations are slightly surreal as they make a big deal out of the fact that you're, in part, fighting to protect your freedom and free will, but its these same conversations and cinematics that stop you playing the game, thus enforcing you to sit and watch as a captive audience.

When you do finally get the chance to play it's an exceptional piece of work, a few more colours wouldn't have gone amiss, and there are times when Snake looks like he's crawling round on a blue screen movie set, but for the most part the action, when you finally get there, is really good fun… it's just a shame there isn't more of it.

Metal Gear 4 is a good game… there's just too much waffle and preaching smothering it for it to be a GREAT game.

Just kind of interesting.  I wonder if that would bother me or not... like to what level things really get in terms of forcing cutscenes on you.  I like a good story and I love watching a good cutscene as a nice reward for tough gameplay... and the level they were at in the first MGS seemed fine to me... but when people were talking about multiple half-hour to 45-minute long scenes and that kind of shit, I definitely am not interested in that.

EDIT - Watched the GSpot review, and it does look pretty damned cool.  Maybe when the rest of you are playing it I'll try to force myself through the rest of 2 so I can finally play 3.

Do I have to play the first two before I play this one? I mean, I'm sure it helps, but is it essential?

I'm getting a PS3 tomorrow morning (went today but have to wait for my paycheck to go through first) and I'm deciding between getting this or GTA4. But I won't pick this up if I won't know whats going on because I haven't played the first two.

They do some recap stuff, but yeah I would play the MGS 1-3 to get the full effect of the game, you'll be kinda lost on a lot of things if you didn't and wouldn't appreciate the references to the other games.

Alright. I finished it up about an hour ago. I think that user review makes some strong points about how the game works, but, where they saw it as a negative side of the game, I enjoyed all that stuff. There's really a lot you could say about the game, but I'll mostly leave it saying it's one of the most interesting games out there. It touches a lot of stuff gameplay, style, and theme wise (even more than previous Metal Gears). In the end it really does a lot to close the circle that started with Metal Gear Solid on the PSX, almost to the point of excessiveness and playing to fanboys. However, that's what Metal Gear is about, being excessive and revealing in it. I love it for that.

Having finished it, I'm leaving it with a rarely achieved completely satisfied feeling. It was a great ending and left me feeling a lot like the ending to the Lord of the Ring movies did; I turned off the system with that bittersweet feeling when something good comes to an end in an appropriate way. They knew the series tread a lot of ground and the world meant a lot to the fans. The game closed pretty much everything respectfully while reminding you why you loved the story so much to begin with.

And yes, it helped having replayed all the games recently, or even at all. I don't think it'll necessarily leave you wanting anything more than details in terms of information, but the impact of much of what is said and done is reliant on the experience of the previous events.

Edit: Oh yeah. And it if it isn't entirely obvious, this means I didn't really stop playing since I got the game yesterday morning. Once I started, I put in about 18 hours straight, got a few hours of sleep, and then played for about 6ish hours to "finish" everything up. That initial play session might actually be the single longest sitting I've done in front of a game, ever. If that isn't a ringing endorsement for a game, I don't know what it. Thank the gods for summer vacation (or what little of it I get).

I think about picking up the MGS4 bundle all the time but then figure I'd need a new television as well, which sucks.  Unless....can you hook a ps3 up to a DVI monitor input?

Not unless the DVI-D input on the monitor supports the HDCP encryption crap.  It probably doesn't.  If it does, you'll need an HDMI-to-DVI-D adapter.  I read a bit of what's out there, and I couldn't find anything about a PS3 VGA cable.  That would be the way to go for any PC monitor, but only if Sony supports the option.  (MS does on the 360.)

I just finished it tonight and I'm extremely happy and satisfied with how the game turned out.  Kojima couldn't have wrapped it up any better.  This is the most fulfilled I have felt finishing a game in quite some time.  I'll pretty much second all of what Sy said and won't go into too many details because of spoilers, but damn this game has left quite an impression on me.  I honestly can't think of anything negative to say about this game besides the fact it ended.  Anyone who loves the Metal Gear universe owes it to themselves to play this game.

Hahaha, I was wondering if you were ever going to mention something about that.  I really need to listen to the stuff that's on there now, they had some History of MGS podcasts that seemed kind of interesting.

Damn it. I don't really want to drop a grand on a PS3 and new TV.  Well, maybe if my tax objection works out according to plan, but even then....

Are the prices of HDTVs still dropping pretty steadily?

You could easily do a decent HDTV and PS3 for under a grand if you get the $400 PS3, at least here in the US, don't know how it would work in Canada though.  You could probably get something in the 26 inch range, LCD of course.  I own a 26" RCA LCD and it looks great. Also I don't know if they sell Vizio in Canada or not, but its a brand worth looking into, a lot of people write them off as a generic brand, but they make really good HDTVs at a decent price.  The only reason I got the RCA over the Vizio because it was on sale and was about $70 cheaper than the Vizio that I was looking at.

And don't feel like you have to buy huge, either.  When Idol and I went to pick up my set, we discovered that a lot of the smaller ones actually look really dang nice.  They may not be quite as big, but they can look pretty fantastic, and then you don't have to blow extra money on a 1080p set (which you'd honestly have to be a total graphics whore with too much money to even appreciate since 720p looks so damned good anywhere under 50 inches).  I know some people don't upgrade because they feel like they have to buy a bigger set if they're going to bother with HD, but the more small widescreen HD sets that I've seen, the more I realize that's totally bogus.  And the longer I own my big TV, the more I realize how totally irrelevant it is to playing games.  Yeah, it's undoubtedly nice, but it doesn't matter how big the TV is as long as you've got a totally engrossing game and a TV with good picture.  After about 5 minutes of playing any game on my big TV, I completely lose sight of the fact that it's big.  It feels absolutely no different playing Assassin's Creed on my 46" HD set than it does to play the same game on my 19" monitor.

For good value in a smaller set, here's one Vizio possibility.  This is a reputable but fairly cheap brand, and you can find it all over (even locally).  You have to see it in person, and I recommend buying any TV at a walk-in store.  You can hook up just about anything to it, including your PC.  The res is the strange but widespread 1366x768 native, making it a good 720p set.  PC res should be 1360x768 (dropping 3 pixels per row on each side).  Looks like you can download the manual there.

Going the PS3-to-VGA route may be possible after all.  I found this cable.  It derives VGA (RGB + Hsync + Vsync) from component (RGB) inputs.  Go read about it, see what you think.

Perfect, I'll check out that link and thanks for all the tips.  I'm book marking this bitch for the inevitable moment I go out to buy a tv.  Chances are I'll be looking in the somewhere from 26-36" range.  I don't watch a lot of television and watch most movies on my pc or laptop, so really anything bigger than the 20" set i've been using since first year university should work.

Beat it last night.  As someone who has been anxiously awaiting the conclusion for years, I can say with certainty that in no way am I disappointed.  This game easily cracks my top ten of all time.  It's a little bittersweet, since anticipation is one of the best parts of a game like this, but I'm convinced that this isn't the end of Metal Gear as a series.  We're probably going to see a prequel of some sort.  I think it would be a little hard to reboot the series with a new character altogether.

Metal Gear Solid 5: In the Womb of Death will feature a pre-birth Solid Snake and let players take control as his genetic material fights off hostile microorganisms sent to kill him before he can be born.  Killing certain hostiles will also net CellSnake collectibles that unlock in-game tracks and audio commentary that he can listen to on his new iPod XtraNano, as Apple attempts to snare the as yet untapped market of the subcutaneous.  Studies show this to be a core demographic in many upcoming marketing schemes for a variety of high-tech businesses across the US and abroad.

Well I finished it last night.  Very impressive game, and what sirean says is true -- it leaves you with a very satisfying ending and closes a lot of the storyline.

Now, having only played part of MGS1, I basically watched the GameTrailers MGS retrospective as well as reading up on the backstory as much as I could so I generally understood what was happening.

I am surprised that I managed to finish it in about 18 hours though.  I'm probably gonna go play it again on the hardest difficulty setting, and try for 0 alerts and 0 kills.
