I had no idea.

That really is the end of an era in movie making. I suppose it could be argued that people like him aren't needed in the industry anymore, but so few things in the new styles come even close to stuff he was pulling off with foam and strings decades ago. Even more modern takes on his own creations pale in comparison to the originals.
