PixelJunk Eden
« on: Tuesday, August 05, 2008, 10:03:02 AM »
If you have a PS3, you should really download and play this.  Here's the E3 trailer.  I think Pyro was saying something about it when he was here, but I didn't know what it was.  The only stuff I knew about with the PixelJunk name was their racing game and their popular Monsters game, inspired by Tower Defense.  I've never been big on the latter, so I never looked into it, and the first just never really caught my interest.

Anyway, I saw more on Eden and was very intrigued, so I bought and downloaded it, and I've been having an absolute blast with it.  It's right along the same lines as Rez, Everyday Shooter, flOw, Synasthete, and Lumines just in terms of the kind of audiovisual niche it falls into, though the games are nothing alike.  It makes me think more of Wik and the Fable of Souls if you're at all into indy gaming, though it's quite different from that in a lot of respects too.

The basic premise is that you're a little thing called a "grimp", and you've got to complete the various "garden" stages in the game by collecting these spore-like things which will grow plants on your home garden, the game's basic hub.  But to do this you also have to grow plants, which you do by popping the game's enemies (the most basic of which are just floating targets and can't hurt you).  When you pop them, they release clouds of pollen, and you can collect the pollen to charge seeds -- hotspots on the map -- which will then grow plants that stretch up and around the level, allowing you to climb around and get up to places you couldn't before.  The aforementioned comparison to Wik is that you can also shoot out lines of silk and use them to twirl yourself around on the plants, collecting crystals which increase your time/health gauge, popping baddies, and collecting pollen.  You've also got rock formations in the game which can't be twirled on with silk, and are harder to navigate, but which you can still cling to.

It's very fun and they've really got a cohesive audiovisual package going on with it.  The music isn't necessarily the most spectacular stuff you ever heard, but it fits really perfectly with the game.  I guess they outsourced the music to some Japanese guy, but I forget the name.  I hadn't heard of him, at any rate.  Still, it's good stuff, and gives the game a trancey, relaxed, sometimes slightly melancholy tone that really works nicely with the vibrant visuals, which range from rich and dark to bright and colorful.

Oh, and did I mention it supports up to 3 players for multiplayer?  Neato!

So yeah, just wanted to throw some info out there since I hadn't heard anyone mention this yet.  I hadn't heard about the game myself until just recently, and it's definitely one of the titles helping to prove that PSN has every bit as much potential as XBLA.  It also makes me pretty happy that the PS3 seems to be finding a place for nice little art games in this style, and I hope it'll foster an environment for more of them as things go on.

Note that it's sort of difficult to get a sense of how the levels are built just looking at these screens.  Watch the trailer for a better idea.  The things get quite vertical and are pretty big.  I believe there are 10 stages, each with 5 of the things you need to collect to "win", and each time you get to a new one it boots you out and lets you go through it again (which sounds like punishment, but the game is very zen-like and fun to simply play, so it gives you an excuse to try new routes through the levels and just experiment with the environment).

That looks simply gorgeous! I love the minimalistic style!

The premise sounds good. I need to get my PS3 online!

Oh, and I forgot to mention that it's only ten bucks.  Not bad at all.  I've paid more for games that I enjoyed considerably less (and were shorter).

I've been sorta following this, but not enough to realize it was coming out so soon. Maybe I'll buy it in a day or two.

Cool, I'll probably get this soon, I had no interest in it initially because of the previous PixelJunk games, but this looks pretty neat.

Fuck, I am so tired of idiots.  It's not like I'm a fanboy about this game or something, but I'm just... well, I'm fucking sick of idiots.

Quote
There is a reason why you have to make your way efficiently through the levels, and it goes against the very nature of this game. An arbitrary time limit has been forced on you, making you rush through what should be a deliberate adventure. Simply existing in this world--taking in the beautiful sights and getting lost in the pounding music--is a joy. The early levels give you ample time to leisurely roam the world, slowly figuring out where the next Spectra is hidden while you happily pollinate another seed. The serene pacing feels perfect, and the environment is a peaceful, happy place where you could lose hours of your day. But the game's harsh time limit, under which you'll have to constantly search for new pellets to feed the quickly diminishing meter, ruins the mood completely. Eden should be a place of quiet beauty; instead it's all too hectic and often exhausting.

I've gotten through maybe halfway through the game and seen more than half the levels, and I think that I have on maybe 2 occasions actually felt a *little* rushed.  And I wasn't even fearing death, I was just like "Okay, I better go get some crystals to get my time back now".  And there's a fucking ton of them everywhere, so unless you're grabbing them when you don't need to, it isn't hard to run around and find a stash.  Plus if you combo 5 (I think) of the pollen-carrying entities, you get a smattering of crystals, meaning you aren't even strictly reliant on what's in the level (and if you're comboing regularly, which you should be simply because it's fun and really not terribly hard if you seize an opportunity when it happens by, you'll be getting a lot of those freebies).  The word "efficient" can't be used to describe a single one of my sessions with the game.  All I've been doing is goofing off.

Quote
The other major flaw with Eden is the sheer repetition present in replaying levels. Every time you nab a Spectra, you are booted back to the hub world. This means you will have to play through each level five times to collect every one in the game. And when you replay levels, you have to recollect Spectra you've already grabbed in addition to new ones. Even though the levels go through slight visual changes as you grab more Spectra, the plant placement stays the same every time. By forcibly removing you from the levels instead of letting you collect every Spectra in one shot, Eden artificially extends the length of the game and, in the process, makes it quite tedious.

Bullshit.  Basically the entire fun of the game, aside from the audiovisual aspects, is just playing the levels and swinging around like a stupid monkey, flying all over the screen and exploring while you have fun.  There's not a great deal of pressure, despite what this idiot and his apparent ineptitude would have you believe, and even if it were only 5 levels it would still be fun to play them repeatedly simply because the inherent gameplay and control are enjoyable.  And it isn't like things are linear.  Every single time I've gone through a level I've approached it completely differently, and not even intentionally... because I pay zero attention to whether or not I'm grabbing spectra.  I'm just trying to grow all the plants and have fun seeing how high I can get my combo score, and I naturally float around the levels doing that until I see a spectra, which I then grab (oh, and if you're smart, you'll spend a lot of time in the level growing stuff and getting points then get a spectra when your time is fairly low, because one of those gets you back to a full time gauge instantly).  The guy talks about how great the game is from the standpoint of just soaking it up and enjoying it, but he plays it like he has to quickly go for all these objectives and has to do it the same way every time, and I guess that just goes back to the fact that he's a dolt, because you don't have to do that at all.  Some of the later levels are slightly more deliberate it seems, because they have more rock formations to limit your movement somewhat, but even in those I've gotten quite creative about circumventing, and I never find myself scaling them same vertical space exactly the same way.

Eh.  Anyway, rant over.  I just think this isn't giving the game a fair shake at all, just like I felt Gerstmann's review of LocoRoco was noteworthy only for showing that the man has an uncanny affinity for missing the fucking point.

Seems like a cool game.  Too bad it isn't on PC.

Yeah, I read that review and pretty much though most of it was bullshit as well.  I played it for a couple of hours today and at no point did I feel rushed.

I think my rage was totally directed at my job and not that guy, but he deserved it for being a douchebag anyway.

Pixel Junk is totally a game I've played before, only not in video game form. I used to imagine the same thing going on with doodles I'd put on paper while in school.

I tried the demo last night and wasn't terribly impressed.  My friend that bought it tells me I need to give it some more time.  I do think the in-game upload to youtube feature is very cool.

I should add that two player (and I guess three player) is a fun little option. The players can grab and throw each other around, so you can get some fun little acrobatics going it you manage to time things up right. The most obvious is being able to grab someone if they're just short on a jump, but you can also double up on combos against the floating enemies and the like.

Reviews said that mode was totally botched, but a lot of players don't seem to have a problem with it.  I guess the dominant character can fuck up and drag other characters with it (other characters warp to its position if it falls), so if you're playing with people who suck, it might get annoying.  But the player response doesn't seem all that negative, so I doubt it's as bad as has been said.  Though again, it may just depend on who you're playing with.

That can happen. I'm not sure on the rules it uses to pick who is the dominate player at a given time because sometimes I would warp to Aimee and she would warp to me at other times. Maybe it had something to do with current score. There were times would one of us would miss a jump and we'd both get dragged down. Really though, isn't that just how a two player game should work? Together you can potentially do well or you can drag the other person down. You can't really fault a game for that. It does seem to handle the screw ups pretty well and it doesn't seem like the game work against you playing against another person anymore than the better 2D games out there.

That's pretty surprising. To an extent, that's almost like an Uncharted game coming to PC.
