Grasshopper Announces No More Heroes Sequel

Grasshopper Announces No More Heroes Sequel Cult Wii title No More Heroes is getting a sequel, following a surprise announcement by Grasshopper Manufacture CEO Goichi Suda (aka Suda51) at the Tokyo Game Show.

A trailer for No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle was revealed, and like its predecessor, it will be a Wii exclusive, currently slated for January or February of 2010.

Few other details of the new game were announced, but consumer website Eurogamer reports that Suda51 wanted to make a sequel in part to "reward the surprisingly large numbers of fans the first game amassed in Europe and the U.S."

The game will again be published by Marvelous Entertainment in Japan. In the West, the original was published by Rising Star Games in Europe and by Ubisoft in North America. As a result, the two versions were different -- the European version, like the original Japanese, featured little explicit gore in contrast with the significantly bloodier American version.

Along with the upcoming Western release of Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse (aka Project Zero 4), Grasshopper Manufacture is also working on an unnamed action horror project with Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami for EA.

The busy developer is also committed to Kurayami on the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo DS -- remakes of Suda51’s earlier titles Flower, Sun and Rain and The Silver Case.

No More Heroes 2 is going to have two versions, over in Europe.

One will have lots of violence.
The other, just won't.

No More Heroes 2 to get two versions News

Grasshopper Manufacture's Suda 51 has told Eurogamer that No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle, the sequel to his cult Wii action game that was announced yesterday, will release in two versions in Europe, one censored for heavy violence.

"We won't be able to make the same game for all territories," Suda 51 said in interview at the Tokyo Game Show. "For Europe, we're going to release two versions. One extreme version, and one with less violence."

The first No More Heroes featured dismemberment, beheading and showers of blood in the US, but in the Japanese version, enemies exploded in fountains of ash and coins. The European version was the same as the Japanese, which caused some controversy.

No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle will follow the same route, but both versions will be made available in Europe, to please hardcore fans as well as supermarket bosses and German censors.

"The last time I did a European press tour, everyone asked me this," the eccentric creator said. "With No More Heroes 2 we want to please the fans too. I want the European users to be able to experience the extreme version."

However, Suda 51 denied that either version of the first No More Heroes could be considered the original. "When I first had the concept, I had both the bloody version and the milder version in mind," he said.

"So when I worked on the US version, it wasn't a problem for me to make, but when I made the Japanese version, I needed to rethink it a little bit. But I did both at the same time."

We'll publish a full interview with Suda 51 soon.

I really wish these games would come to PS3 and I really don't understand the reasoning behind the Wii exclusive status considering Killer7 was released on PS2 and Gamecube.  Yeah there was the whole complaint that it didn't look as good as the Gamecube version but for the style this game is, the PS3 should be more than capable of a good port.

Isn't the control scheme pretty wii-centric?

Suda 51 says No More Heroes 3 (and beyond) will NOT be on the Wii.
They want to take it to other hardware and turn it into a huge franchise -- probably X360 for Project Natal.

You know, Suda 51 could probably do some really interesting things with something like Natal. I almost feel like controllers are really limiting that dudes drug inducive imaginary.

You have a point.  Still, that whole project rubs me the wrong way for some reason.  It just strikes me as idiotic.  But if anyone could do something interesting with it, it's Suda 51.

Did anyone pick this up?  I took a gander at the game's website today and was laughing my ass off at some of the vignettes playing in the background.  I think it's definitely a buy down the road.
