McCain gave an excellent concession speech. It was great, and yet baffling- where was this guy the past year? I used to love McCain a year ago. I would gave voted for him until he won the Republican nomination, where he changed.

He waited until he lost to give his best speech of the year. Its baffling.

The guy can fucking talk.  He is so good behind a mike.  That speech I just finished watching had me nodding my head, something no other politician hasn't been able to do in a shitload of years. What he said is right on the money.  Freaking bullseye.  Does any of it make it past the podium?  Next 4 years will tell.  His vocal sentiments are my heartfelt ones.

There's not - different people vote based on different priorities.  For instance, you once seriously considered being a nurse.  As such, you probably voted for Obama because he's a strong man who could hold you tenderly in his arms.  That's no more wrong than Que not wanting to vote for him because he doesn't believe in his socialist values.

That's a pretty dominant philosophy in political theory.  Well, I guess the full thing is that you can never please everyone, but you certainly can piss most of them off. Generally, it's why large parties don't really hard line anything if they don't have to.   The less you actually do and say, the less chance you have of alienating people.  Speak in vague rhetoric, and people will hear what they want to hear.

We all win or we all lose as a nation based on that. If the president is good, things improve for everyone. If hes bad, things get worse for everyone. Everyone. No matter who you voted for. So we won't truly know if we "won" for a few years.

Blacks attach a huge significance to this, and I don't blame them.  It is a real historic moment (the kind that gets prominent mention in history books).  I don't mind them saying "we won!"  They did, big time.  But I don't want to hear "you lost!" from anyone, because that's crap in every way.  The man I voted for was elected, so how exactly did I lose?  A lot of people who voted for the loser have the same chance of winning (or losing) in the long run as the rest of us.

McCain was probably the best possible candidate in the country at that time (although, the best option on the ballot was probably Nader in my mind). He was also the next possible option four years later, but obviously never got that chance.  I don't know what happened here, but it was kind of a shit show.  His age is a factor that would make me think twice about electing him, and it's become very apparent over the last couple years.  Beyond that, he was just all over the place and it almost seemed like he was going through the motions.  Whoever was actually running his campaign should probably get a bullet to the brain (uh, career-wise).  But that said, I don't think many in recent years would be able to go up against Obama.

This is the downside of Obama's  wicked marketing machine.  He sold himself a little to well to the LCD. They don't really get it, and if we want to go into the "BUT" I mentioned before, this is where I think it comes in - you can make the right choice for the wrong reasons.  I think it was a record turnout....a lot of stupid people voted.  Now, that's not to say that there aren't legitimate reasons to have the "we won, you lost" attitude after an election, it's just that in all of the places in the world where you can actually say that there are a lot of mass graves floating around.

I hope Obama will focus more on domestic issues and withdraw troops from my side of the pond. I hope he'll bring good to the US and see it prosper. I also hope he doesn't get impeached or worse, assassinated.

I expect the next couple of years will be mostly rectifying the last 8 disastrous ones, then perhaps after that we'll start seeing the promised "change."

Well, not really.
Apply that logic to the Bush years. Certain people are doing much better now than they were eight years ago, even though many more are doing worse. At very few points in history are we truly "one nation", and
policies almost always benefit one group at the expense of another.

On another note, the one truly humorous point to the election was when Al Quaeda (sp?) endorsed McCain.
It had nothing to do with McCain, of course. But it turns out Bush's policies are great for the recruitment of Al Quaeda. Oh, the irony.
