Life Aquatic
« on: Tuesday, November 11, 2008, 07:40:18 PM »
So, I just watched "Life Aquatic" again, and I think it may be my favorite Wes Anderson movie. I remember the movie getting some negative reviews and such when it came out, but I look at it now, and I just can't see why. The movie is awesome. It's funny, original, the cinematography is excellent, the acting, it's a brilliant movie. Maybe it's just one of those movies that aren't appreciated until years later? I dunno, but it's great.

Just thought I'd mention it..

Oh, and the chick is knitting me the sweet ass hat that Owen Wilson wears in the movie. The one with the "stop light" thing on it.

Yeah, I liked it quite well.  I'm with keebs, though: Royal Tenenbaums is my favorite.  Julia's too.

I really did want to see it, but still haven't.  I just don't watch movies much anymore.  No time or energy.

Sorry guys, but I can't sit back silently anymore while Wes Anderson gets undeserved praise. I'm going to have to use cliched words when it comes to him because they're the same words that describe him so well.

Anderson is a hack director who struck gold with Rushmore and has been trying to copy that movie's success with his same "quirky, pretentious, indie" formula over and over again. He uses the same type of characters, the same actors and the same type of indie music.

His stuff reminds me of Little Miss Sunshine, a horrible, unfunny movie that literally stole all of it's jokes from other movies. However, since the movie was labeled as "smart", people refused to admit that it sucked for fear of being called stupid. Thats what I think of Wes Anderson movies.

Who's Wes Anderson?

Little Miss Sunshine wasn't "smart!" It was amusing but it's not a "smart" movie by any measure.

Well, there was. And there was a firefight. And Nick totally lost. He probably thought we'd forget. But, valiantly, Que resurrected our victory and has shown light on our triumphs.

Apparently there's a little prologue video to The Darjeeling Limited which I did not see in the cinema; it is on the DVD though. It's a short 13 min clip with Natalie Portman, called Hotel Chevalier.

Lost? His movies (in my opinion) suck, I haven't heard one argument to support why his movies are any good. Hell, not even his fans on IMDB can come up with any reasons.

My post wasn't entirely serious. But we can assume it was, just for the sake of argument.

Also, here's an argument for why his movies are good: I enjoy them. but I will agree that they are pretentious.

I don't think they take themselves seriously enough to be called pretentious.  Granted I know nothing about the director as a person, but I don't find the movies pretentious.  Just preposterous.  In a good way.

If you like his movies, thats fine, but I don't. I not trying to change anyone's mind, I'm just trying to express my point of view. I don't want to argue, so I'll just leave it at that.

I guess I should also note that I'm a bit biased as in I paid full price for this movie and I wasn't impressed by it.

They didn't show that at your theatre? That sucks. It made the story he was writing so much funnier.

I thought the short was part of the movie. The theatre I saw the movie at showed it.

They tend to censor a lot of stuff out here. I guess they deemed the short "irrelevant." Now that I have seen it, the whole dynamic of the character and his reasoning (and how he sometimes reacts to his brothers comments) make a bit more sense.

Did Team Zissou have a topless female intern oceanologist?  If not, you could have ended up paying for one with your winnings (for one night anwyay).

I'd take Metal Gear over boobs too.. Then again I'm a legs/ass man.

Bottomless intern oceanologist? Hmm, now I'm distracted.
