"Everyone Plays" Month.
« on: Saturday, January 10, 2009, 12:53:03 PM »
I know you're all a bunch of lazy people who never participate in anything, but it sounded like a fun idea anyway... so I thought I'd put it out there.

Idol and I had been toying with the idea of doing a "Dwarf Fortress Month" for a while, where we just sat down and played it a lot for a month since it's so hard to get into, and then anyone who wanted to try it along with us could sort of learn the ropes as the rest of us did.  That way it would end up being more friendly, and we could all share stupid stories of our horrible demises, etc.  That seemed like a great idea, and we do plan to do that.  However, I also thought... why not suggest a game every month or couple of months that we could try to get people playing all at once?  Just sort of a fun way for people to play something unusual together and talk about it.  Like most of my ideas, it will probably fail utterly due to lack of participation, but even if nobody's playing but myself, or Idol and I, it's not like there's any harm.

So here's what I've been thinking to start (without the months being definite, of course):

Feburary - Everyone Plays Dwarf Fortress (free)
March - Everyone Plays Freespace 2 ($6)
April - Everyone Plays Depths of Peril ($20, has demo)
May - Everyone Plays Mount and Blade ($30, has demo)
June - Everyone Plays Hinterland ($20)
July - Everyone Plays Age of Booty ($10)

The biggest expense is Mount and Blade, at $30, which I imagine might dissuade some folks, but it's got a demo they could play instead to get a feel first, and if they like it they can pay to simply unlock the demo, or buy the game on Steam.  Hinterland is less of an investment, but it should be more obvious whether or not someone would like it.   Same with Age of Booty and Depths of Peril (the latter has a demo).  DF is, of course, free.  And Freespace 2 is widely considered the best space combat sim of all time.  All the games also have really low system requirements (with the possible exception of Age of Booty which isn't out on PC quite yet, but I can't imagine them going too far with it).

Anyway, that's my current plan, though it could change with feedback.  Join if you like, or simply observe.

Dammit about Mount & Blade (Steam).
That was $15 during that After X-Mas Steam sale.

Yeah.  Had I even half a clue then what the game fucking was, I'd have bought it in a heartbeat.

Sounds like a need idea, though I can tell you the dwarf fortress game sounds really daunting... and looks it too... I was actually curious about XCom, or even the mod Scott found for it.

Edit: Also we can all play Tribes 2 again as well, which Im fond of that idea.

Well, that's kind of the idea.  I've always wanted to try DF, but the game is just scary looking.  I know how cool it can be because I've seen videos, and I've watched the way it procedurally generates landscape and everything... it's an amazing game.  But I want to go into it with other people so we can share our stupid blunders and learn together, share tips, etc.  That's why idol and I had talked about it before, and I think Ghandi said he'd wanted to try it but would be more inclined to suck it up and learn if we were playing too.  So that's when the idea sort of came together.

It'd be great fun to share crazy X-Com stories too if we all played it at the same time, and might encourage people who missed 'em to try 'em out.  And I'm always up for some Tribes.

Yeah, I'm definitely game. I can't say that February will be a great month for me to get deep into a game such as DF, but I'll play and discuss as much as I can.

I like the idea, though. It's hard to get everyone here to play at the same time, but if everyone plays at their own pace it might work better.

Maybe it'd be better to go for 2 months?  I know it's hard to get people together for stuff (actually, it isn't -- I know a couple other boards which do similar stuff all the time, but...), which is why I wasn't even going to suggest it at first.  But it just sounds like such a fun idea.

A month is a good time period - I'd say that it's more important to pick good games. I'm excited about playing Freespace 2, which I've never played before. And I say that hesitantly, because I'm pretty sure that sentence will cause Sy to hunt me down and kill me.

Nah.  He actually gave me a joystick trying to get me to play it, heh.

EDIT - Retail Mount and Blade is on sale for $10 at BestBuy.com.  Back ordered, but I went for it.  From what I gather, that's a pretty great deal.

That beats the After X-Mas Steam deal for Mount & Blade, Que.

I don't know how true this is, but a thread went up today on IGN and they say you can get Mount & Blade for $5 at Gamestop. Store only, not online.

Nice.

EDIT:
I called a bunch of the GS stores near me -- none of them had it, but they did say "It's only $5, if we did actually have it."

So, there's even more confirmation for you guys.

At say $5 at GS or $10 at BB, I'm sure gamers wouldn't mind taking a chance on Mount & Blade PC...
Either deal sounds good to me. I'mma check my BB later.

But yeah, damn shame no GS seems to have it....heh.

Well, its still backordered at Best Buy. Hope they get more in.

But this weekend Mount & Blade is only $7.50 on Steam.

Also, Dwarf Fortress month approaches! I'm going to put together my install for others to use. Ive customized some tilesets that I like (16x16 and an 8x8), have some nice mods added (mostly adding flavor text), and possibly a nice world gen script that will generate a world thats easier to get started with.
