Retro Game Wallpaper Remakes
« on: Friday, February 13, 2009, 10:47:10 AM »
I was browsing around Lifehacker and I came across a recent article on retro game wallpapers that look frickin' fantastic!

Here's a link to Orioto's gallery (the artist behind it).

Tet, I think you'll especially appreciate Land Sorrow.

Holy crap that is awesome, I might have to see about getting that Land Sorrow piece printed out to hang on my wall, since the file is a nice, large resolution.  Some of the other ones are pretty cool as well, but that Land Sorrow is easily my favorite.

Hehe I figured :D It's my wallpaper now! On my PS3 too ;D

I think Que and Cobra will like the Metroid one. It's dark but I think that's you guys may like about it.

Those are great.  Thanks for the link.  I downloaded everything for the games I know, like Zelda Sonic and Mario.  I also checked out the rest of his gallery and found a few more gems there.

I was expecting to be mildly amused, but holy crap, those are amazing.  The Zelda one is easily my favorite, but the Megaman X and Metroid ones are also incredible.  But the others are really good too, that guy's got talent.  I'm blown away.  I would more than love to have that Zelda one printed for my wall.

Wow, those are fantastic!  I'm with Que.  The Zelda one is the best.  The Sonic ones I liked a lot too.

Can you imagine if they remade and expanded A Link to the Past with an art style like that?  Man.

I know.  It would be awesome.  What's interesting to me is that it's a fairly dark piece but it's the chibi Link from cheery-bright The Wind Waker.  Quite the contrast, and quite effective.

Those are awesome. New wallpaper for me.

And Que, we're talking about Nintendo here. I can't see them doing an art style like that. But it would be awesome.

Well, I know they'd never do that, but it would be amazing if they did.

Orioto has been making some more glamorous retro games wallpapers, most notably a new Metroid one! Check it out.

Someone give that guy a fucking medal of honor.  Seriously.  No really, [urlhttp://orioto.deviantart.com/art/Big-Blue-116686280=]seriously[/url].  If I ever start that game museum I dream about, he's getting his own wall.

Quote from: Orioto
But i realize everytime i don't mention it, people believe it's a painting from scratch ! As usual, (and as it will always be), that's a matte painting and painting over with some painted elements !
Can someone please explain what he means by this?  For reference, it is in his comments regarding Mario World.

My guess would be he means he starts with a screenshot that he then paints over and embellishes, as opposed to starting with a blank canvas and paints up from there.

Cool interview.  Should have figured him as a Vanillaware fan.

I shouldn't head read that.  I went to the wiki link for them and then started wishing again that I had an English translation of Princess Crown.  I really loved it, but I got so tired of reading translation material out of a binder that I never did quite finish.
