Tabula Rasa to end in massive alien invasion
« on: Friday, February 27, 2009, 01:36:09 PM »
Humanity will lose.

Tabula Rasa is shutting down, and their little MMO world won't just close but have a huge alien invasion attack...everything. If you've got the game, it might be cool to log in and see it.

That's kind of a cool way to end things.

The first MMO to truly world changing event and it's gone. Too bad.

Haha, while in this case its ironic but your right, I wish more MMOs took bigger chances with world events. Like in WoW if a capital city was totally destroyed and another was to come in to replace it, but even when I think about that, it sort of takes place when the new WotK came out. While Dalaran, being the new neutral city in Northrend, pretty much replaced Shattrath in Outlands.

Hehe when I first heard of it (last year I think) I thought it was an appetizer! "Tabula" is a type of Arabic salad. :P

No, it's taboola "tab-boo-la" but for some reason some North Americans pronounce it "tab-boo-leh" probably from the Lebanese ambiguation of the "ah" and "eh" sounds. To Lebs it's the same.

For some reason I always thought they said "tabooleh" in Saudi... though I always noticed it spelt Taboolah.

Damn, that's a great salad. Full of nutrition, and a taste that is just fantastic. I miss having it. :(

I also miss zatir and Egyptian cheese mmmmmmmm.....

I remember a world ending event in City of Heroes...well, when the beta ended that is.  It was a blast.  Utter mayhem.

It's a shame this game didn't last.  I enjoyed it for the 2 months I played it but by the 3rd month things were getting a little stale, they just weren't putting out content fast enough and there were little things with the game that were getting annoying.

Do you guys think it would have lasted a lot longer if it had adopted the "free-to-play" model?

My understanding is it got fucked up and shifted focus throughout development from a group based mmo to a pvp one.  If that's actually the case, i'm sure it would have lasted longer, but i doubt it would have ever turned a profit.

Here's some stuff from the end of Tabula Rasa from Massively.com

Next up, On Ars Technica, here's an Editorial that ponders why games that are failing seem to currently be the only ones that give the player any sort of actual complete 100% closure.

Quote
It seems every game you play ends by pointing at a sequel, with story threads left hanging, characters left floating in the depths of space, or wars left unwon. When was the last time you finished a game and felt completely satisfied by the experience? With Tabula Rasa, at least the ending has come for everyone; there will be no final call from the governor, no last-minute angel investor. The war is going to come to an end, and by all accounts humanity didn't win, and the game ended with quite the bang. Sure, it was a down note, but the game failed, and a happy ending would be somewhat inappropriate for fans.

Is this what it takes to get a final goodbye from a game? Does a world have to fail to be so decisively shut down? As all the game's characters die, as the servers are shut down, as the data is erased or backed up and then boxed or whatever happens to MMO data once the game is done, it's hard not to be a little sad.
The sights and sounds of the world of Tabula Rasa are gone, forever. All the memories written into those ones and zeroes will quickly be forgotten, and no one will walk those grounds again. The game never gained the following that NCSoft hoped for. It did one thing better than almost every other game on the market however: end with grace.
