Today, 20th March 2009, Tripwire is proud to announce its next title – Killing Floor – coming soon to Steam.

Roswell, GA, March 20th 2009 – Tripwire Interactive is proud to announce Killing Floor, due for release over Steam in the near future. Killing Floor is a first-person co-op survival horror, set in and around London after a mad scientist’s “specimens” have broken loose and gone on the rampage.

The game features:

Co-op game mode for up to six players obliterating multiple waves of specimens

    * Solo game mode for offline play
    * Watch those crucial and violent creature deaths in slomo “ZEDtime”, even in multiplayer
    * 9 different monster types trying to eat your face off, armed with everything from teeth and claws, through to chainsaws, chainguns and rocket-launchers
    * 12+ weapons for the players to chose from, ranging from knives and fire-axes up to pump shotguns, rifles and a flamethrower
    * Add in a welder, medical tools and body armor to help the players survive
    * Persistent Perks system, allowing players to convert their in-game achievements into permanent improvements to their character’s skills and abilities
    * Players choose which Perks to play with, so they can best balance out a co-op team to survive the horrors
    * Open, non-linear play areas: choose when and where to fight – or run; weld doors closed to try and direct the monster horde
    * Full support for Steamworks features, including Steam Achievements and Friends
    * Fully-configurable, allowing players to change things as simple as the difficulty level or number of creature waves, or go so far as to set up their own favorite waves of monsters
    * Includes SDK for the creation of new levels and mods

For more information over the coming weeks, see the Killing Floor website and forums: www.killingfloorthegame.com.

Plenty of screens can be seen here

I suppose it's to be expected after the commerical success of Left 4 Dead, but man... complete ripoff.

If I recall, this was once a UT2004 Mod, at one time...

Ripoff or not, I'll buy it if it's done well. I'm a sucker, I know.

EDIT: Actually, after skimming the article and looking at the screens, it does just look like a dated mod. (which I guess it is) Unless there's something really distinguishable about this, it'll be a case of "but I could just play Left 4 Dead instead."

EDIT: Speaking of which, I may actually buy a second copy of L4D. My biggest complaint with the game is the difficulty, which is directly related tot he fact that I bought it for 360 and have to use a damn controller. Why the hell did I do that to myself?

I tried to warn you.

But yeah, as cool as L4D is, there is a ridiculous amount of room for improvement, and I would very happily switch to another franchise that did it better, which really wouldn't be all that hard.  Valve just doesn't know how to maintain a game properly.

Hey Valve, thanks for that L4D SDK and all you took for-fucking-ever to release, but notice how these guys gave us an SDK like... two days after the game came out.  Maybe you should, you know, think about that.  Just sayin'.

Being reminded about this game, I decided to check out a trailer, and used Steam.  I am instantly reminded of why I hate it, after using Impulse extensively for Demigod-related stuff in the last while.  Steam is reading my HDD furiously and has been for over a minute now with no sign of a loaded program anywhere.  Oh, and now that it just came up, it appears that the stupid update thing telling me about the guest passes I have for a game that I've turned off about 6 times now has yet again magically reset itself to the "on" position.

I feel bad for these guys.  This trailer is going to have to be fucking awesome if it's going to convince me that I need this game; it really has to work harder than most trailers would just because of the Steam tie-in.

EDIT - Well, shit.  That was a pretty fun trailer.  It's got all the gratuitous overkill stuff that L4D really didn't.  I'm not that big a fan of the monster design, but it's a much more comic-booky looking atmosphere.  At twenty bucks, I could be convinced if it turns out to have a decent amount of content (and the SDK is already out, which is good!).

That's what I was thinking, Que.

This game looks like a L4D type of game -- but in a matter of no time, these guys turn a SDK out; which L4D gamers have been wanting for SO LONG. Funny.

What's a problem with Killing Floor is...well, we already got L4D. L4D's great -- so, KF is gonna have to do a lot to make a gamer float over to that.

But really, if the gaming community supports the SDK, that could be the push it really needs. I'm sure the cheap budget price ($20) helps, too.

It'd be really something if the developers pump out DLC, here and there -- which Valve has really been slow at for L4D.

I bet if this was on Impulse for $20, Que would've bought it already! :P

I really don't know which came first, but hearing that it was originally an UT2004 mod makes me think Valve sort of ripped KF off when they made L4D. Yea, they improved a lot too. Unfortunately, L4D is now widely known, and KF just looks like a more primitive version. I just watched like 30 minutes of gameplay of it on Youtube, and something about it just felt moddy to me. I guess the weapon buying instead of just grabbing them in the safe room was one. Purchasing weapons is so Counter Strike-ish in my mind. Not that it's bad, but it's one of the things that made me feel like it just didn't have as much polish.

Watching the gameplay though, even some of the zombie designs seemed like Valve may have gotten their ideas from KF. The fat zombie, the ones crawling around on things, the screamy chick one.

It looks cool.  I'll probably give it a shot at some point in the near future.  I just wish I could find somewhere that talked about what exactly you get for the $20.  I wouldn't mind knowing how many maps it shipped with.

Apparently it's $15 now!

Just from the features list I'm intrigued. I like a lot of the ideas they have in there but I'd like to see how the game actually plays out.

Here are some features that got my attention:
Quote
# Persistent Perks system, allowing players to convert their in-game achievements into permanent improvements to their character's skills and abilities
# Equip your team with welders, medical tools and body armor to help your odds of survival
# Choose which Perks to play with to best balance out your co-op team against the horrors
# Open, non-linear play areas: choose when and where to fight — or run; weld doors closed to direct the monster horde down alternate corridors

It looks like it's gonna be partially class-based. I like the possibility of sealing off certain paths.

What?! it says $14.99!

Is the price different per region? It still says $14.99 for me.

Yeah, it's twenty bucks here.  I'd buy it at $15, but for some reason that extra $5 is keeping me away from it.

That's odd and downright f'd up! Why are you guys getting charged an extra $5?!

At first I thought it was a weekend offer and I posted just before it expired but it's still lower here.

B/c it's Steam-required, not Impulse-required.
Well, that's my reason at least, anyways...

Got some more details! I had a chance to check it out first hand.

It comes with 5 maps:

Biotics Lab
Farm
Manor
Offices
West London

The game is standalone now, but you can very clearly that it is a UT2004 mod. The screenshots are, quite frankly, too good. The model design is not bad, the textures are great, they've added some filtering effects but the overall look is very dated. A lot of the videos I've seen on YouTube (i.e. Killing Floor Trailers) are unclear and are filtered, pretty deceptive. Anyway, just keep in mind that the visuals are not quite as good as they're made out to be.

Gameplay-wise it's pretty basic. You get to choose your appearance from 1 of 6 available in each map. If you had racked up enough points you can purchase a specialty or "perk" at the character select (or at the trader between waves). The game is basically a variant of the Monster Hunt game type from UT and UT2004. Zombies/monsters come at you in successive waves, giving you a 1 min break in between waves to prepare and restock. The difference is that there's a trader shop, where you can buy new weapons and perks, whose location changes with each wave forcing you to rotate around the map until the match is done.

Six player coop is alright, though it can get a little crowded at times. The format of the gameplay encourages players to cooperate i.e. one guy will restock on medpacks while another guy welds the door shut, another guy could focus on heavy gunning while another on sniper-savvy weaponry. Basically no one can survive on his own because you can't have it all. The sniper is too slow to handle hordes and the heavy gunner is too slow run around, a medic may favour carrying more medpacks over the weight of an armour vest, etc.

It's an interesting idea but I honestly feel it would have had way more success had it been a mod of L4D! Adjusting and building on the L4D formula would have allowed these guys to focus on the gameplay, which is supposed to be KF's primary offering.

With the final SDK nearly at the door I think it's plausible that someone will make a mod for L4D that'll basically undercut KF.

This thread reminded me of the Alien Swarm mod. I never got a chance to play it proper, but 4 player class based co-op, objectives to accomplish, and swarms of aliens in a top down blast fest. They should have turned that retail instead of Killing Floor. The guys that made it went and tried to go retail with the Source engine and it seems to have killed them.

FREE DLC coming soon Killing Floor.
Also, there will be some Purchasable DLC coming, too.

Free DLC - "Heavy Metal" DLC
Quote
20 July 2009, Roswell, GA: Tripwire is happy to announce details for the upcoming “Heavy Metal” free content pack for their hit co-op zombie shooter, Killing Floor. This first of many free updates planned for Killing Floor adds an all-new map, new weapons and new functionality and will be available to anyone that owns the game.

The new level, entitled “Foundry”, is set in an old iron works which the Horzine Corporation has converted to support their top secret military projects. Exactly what they have been up to here is a matter for conjecture – but before we can send in investigators, your squad has to get in there and clean out the infestation of specimens.

To assist in your task, there are now two new weapons. The first is an old favorite of armed forces the world over: the AK-47. In our case, it has the folding stock, for ease-of-use in close quarters. This one will fit in as a heavier weapon for the Commando Perk and provide extra stopping power over the base Bullpup. The second is a weapon that just about every special-forces soldier in every movie seems to know intimately, for no good reason other than personal interest: the Japanese Katana sword. Just where the squad got hold of it is a mystery, but this piece of Samurai history is just so fitting, such a thing of beauty and such a perfect melee weapon, that we aren’t going to ask too many questions.

Paid DLC - Character Pack #1
Quote
Tripwire Interactive will be releasing our first paid DLC character pack for Killing Floor very soon. This character pack adds four new playable characters including a Horzine foundry worker and a soldier in prototype Horzine body armor.

Killing Floor will be going to retail outlets
Quote
Killing Floor is available now on Steam (www.steampowered.com) and will be in stores across the world shortly.
