The Wrestler - movie with Mickey Rourke
« on: Saturday, April 25, 2009, 06:50:21 PM »
Anyone seen The Wrestler yet with Mickey Rourke yet?

Saw it a few days ago.

I expected Rourke to be great, since he was up for Academy Award for this (lost to Penn in Milk) -- and yes, Rourke was awesome -- but I didn't expect for the rest of the movie to be as great as it turned out.

I thought the movie great.

Anyone else seen this?

I watched it last week. It got some pretty good reviews.

I thought it was boring. Good emotional performances but it just didn't draw me in.

Good performances, and the movie ends up to be pretty depressing.  Quite expected since it was from the same director as Requiem for a Dream.

Overall I liked it.

Hmmm... now I dont know if I want to see it. While I dont mind depressing movies so much, like Million Dollar Baby was but was also amazing, Requiem for a Dream made me feel like total shit after watching it. I understood what it was going for, but damn, it was just painful and left me a little exhausted, definitely one I'll never desire to see again.

Not me.  Million Dollar Baby is exactly the kind of movie I want to be warned about before I make my life worse by watching it.  So I'll be avoiding the other two like the plague.  Thanks for the heads up.

Did you see Requiem for a Dream?

That's a VERY depressing movie. I don't really know what's sadder -- Million Dollar Baby or Requiem.

There's plenty of that pain and torture here in The Wrestler.

I'm thinking of one scene in the movie that involved hardcore-style wrestling...

The Wrestler is in a completely different league from Requiem for a Dream. Requiem for a Dream is a depressing movie, Million Dollar Baby is as well, but less so. The Wrestler doesn't fit. It's been a while since I saw it but what part of the movie was depressing? I thought it was the opposite. Not really a spoiler at all but in tags just in case:

Actually when I write it out like that it is sort depressing.
