Wait. Jedi Academy wasn't a sequel to that?

It was more of an expansion.

Wait...did Jedi Academy continue the Jedi Outcast storyline?

Delayed until March 2010.

Activision is delaying Singularity so that it doesn't compete with Modern Warfare 2 (in the Fall 2009 release quarter). Plus, Activision really wants to establish Singularity a franchise.

This'll probably give Raven more time to polish the game up, too.

Sounds like a smart move to me, since I am also betting that Q4 2009 will be a busy season for "Way Too Many NEW Games Will Be Released At The Same Time And Compete For Your Dollar."

Activision: Singularity Delayed Due to Modern Warfare
by Nick Breckon Jul 08, 2009 5:30pm CST tags: Singularity, Delay

Activision has confirmed to Shacknews that Raven's shooter Singularity has been delayed to March 2010 due to strong demand for the publisher's upcoming sequel Modern Warfare 2.

Singularity, a new IP developed by Raven, was originally slated for a fall 2009 release. The highly anticipated Modern Warfare 2 is set to launch on November 10, leading Activision to space out Singularity's release in avoidance of the busy season.

"The level of excitement for Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 coming out of E3 well exceeded our expectations and therefore we have decided to move Raven's upcoming sci-fi first person action title, Singularity, from 2009 to Q1 2010," said Activision
in a statement.

"We believe that the March quarter will provide a better opportunity to establish the new cutting-edge action IP as a "must-have" title and clears the way for Modern Warfare 2 to dominate this holiday season," the company added.

Interestingly, thats exactly what Carmack was talking about when they went with ZeniMax.

Quote
ZeniMax came with an offer. The more we looked at it, the more we liked it. The two obvious choices [of id buyers] were Electronic Arts and Activision. They're the two giants of the industry. But we knew that we would have to go through big corporate changes if we went with them. We know the developers at the studios owned by those companies. And while they have good things to say, there is no doubt about it that things would change at a company of that scale. If we had gone to one of those companies, we would be one more studio. We would be a prized studio. But we wouldn't even be their only shooter studio. We would be competing for resources with our brother and sister studios. There is no question if they have Call of Duty project, there would be some degree of conflict there.
I mean, no question its a good idea to not put the new IP out next to the super-hyped established series sequel. I just though it was amusing that this is the exact thing id wanted to avoid.

EDIT: I totally thought of this before reading to comments of the shacknews article.

But see, Id's much bigger than say Raven. Raven has really never let loose of being in Id's shadow; they're basically Id Software Jr. It's kind of like how many see Obsidian as Bioware Jr.

Id Software itself has the name power that no matter really what they do for a shooting game, they can compete with Call of Duty IP -- especially if they pulled out a big-name franchise like say Doom 4 or Quake 5. Actually, I'm more excited about Rage than say the possibility of another Doom or Quake game -- even though I'd jump for joy to hear (more) about another Doom or (the thought of another) Quake coming.

Singularity does look kinda cool and all -- but if I had to pick b/t MW2 and Singularity this Fall, I'd pick MW2. Singularity hasn't really shown or done much to really get me super-duper-excited for it yet. The whole time-veil gimmick does sound cool and the whole Russian alternate history going on here -- but, what else do we really know about Singularity? Yeah, not a lot. It looks like a cross b/t Timeshift (time is the gimmick), Wanted (the damn bullet thing), and STALKER (Russia!!!!).

Also, Brink hasn't really said anything of much at all...

You know, it's really about id having name brand recognition (that is to say: power).  I mean Raven has name power (but not as much as id).  They just don't have the same name behind them that id does (or used) to.  I mean, they could (maybe), but they just don't.  Not yet anyway.  They could someday, but not right now.  Raven makes good games, but not as good as Doom or Quake (even though Raven made Quake IV).  But even though Quake IV was good, it was not as good as Doom III (and that's because Raven doesn't have the name recognition that id does, and will always be in there shadow).  I would really like if Raven made a good game (a great game would be better), but first they have to get out of id's shadow or they will always be viewed as id's inferior.  Especially when id has heavyweights like Doom and Quake and Raven has not as great of games.  Well some are heavyweights, but some aren't.  Actually none are really heavyweights.  But Jedi Outcast was good (Raven made that, right?).  They should make another one of those (but even if they did, it could not compete with Doom because it is made by id... or Quake for that matter (except Quake IV which was made by Raven)).  But I don't really want Doom or Quake now anyway (maybe soon though, like next week).

Oh yeah, Call of Duty... um id doesn't want to compete with that because they can sway they market with their name power, but maybe not even against COD.  Raven might try it though because they don't really have much to lose (since they are always in id's shadow).  COD is an awesome game, but I would like another Raven-developed Jedi Outcast game instead (maybe), or Quake (but not developed by Raven (instead I would want id to develop it because they are the better studio (or at least the one with the bigger power of their name))).

Man (I thought) I was bad at (using) parenthesis (too much) (sheesh!).

I think Raven did some great work with the action-beat'em-ups like X-men Legends 1 & 2, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, and Wolverine. At least those were the titles that kinda set them apart from id. It's when they do shooters that they turn back into id's aspiring younger sibling.

They also launched the best Star Trek shooter Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force. It also had an excellent follow-up, Elite Force 2, which was developed by Ritual.

Y'know what I'd love to see?

Heretic III !!!

Heretic II was a lot of fun.

Uh-oh, this ain't good..

UE3.0 Texture Streaming issues are REALLY bad in this Singularity PC, taking often several minutes to load a texture in an area.

People have found a minor work-around, though - see link for details...

For those who didn't know - this game has NO load screens throughout its 10 hour or so campaign. I wonder if that's why this game has major issues w/ Texture Streaming, since most UE3.0 Engine games load "maps" after certain spots.

No textures loaded yet...

Finally loaded...

Wow, that's pretty bad.

I could have sworn I had seen loading screens in a youtube gameplay video.. I imagine it just has enormous maps and it very rarely goes through a loading sequence as a transition between chapters.

I wonder when they'll fix it and get the patch deployed...
