NEW - July 7, 2010:
GameStop.com has The Saboteur PC for $9.99.
Shipping costs not mentioned here - which is $2.99 (5-10 day shipping) and up.

So, if you won't buy online, YMMV - you guys might want to call your local GameStop(s) and see if they have a copy of Saboteur PC for that same exact price...

OLD:
From E3 2009 - preview on The Saboteur from EA.

This game is a 3rd person action game with an open-world that takes place in Paris during World War 2. It begins in black and white, but the more you do, the more color gets added to the screen...

I'm curious given the game's uncut version that'll have nudity and all, what rating it might wind up with - maybe M or AO?

I'm totally sold.  I had no interest in it just from descriptions, but that video was really cool.  Looks great.  And nice to see they were playing it on PC.

I like the whole black and white to color gimmick this thing got going on - with it meaning that you got Nazis out of the area.

Idol - hence why I made the comment a few posts up about whether the game will get a M or AO.

EDIT:
Yeah, I knew I saw it somewhere, a while back - Shacknews.

And b/c they wanted to throw a trailer up for people to watch everywhere, under ESRB guidelines (since they rate all the commercial games), Pandemic had to remove the nudity just for the sake of the trailer.

I guess the consensus is that the gameplay kind of sucks... the visual style doesn't really save the game.  I guess I won't pick this up at its full price.

GameStop.com is selling Saboteur PC for $9.99 now.
This thread gets a bump for that.

If interested, you might want to see if your local store has it for the same price or just buy it online (shipping costs will apply, of course).

SIDE NOTE: PC version is known to have issues w/ ATI 3000, 4000, and 5000 cards, so you know...
So, you might want to check EA forums, to see if it been fixed, if there's work-arounds, and whatnot.
So, you have been warned...

Damn, I want that. I wonder if I can find a GS that has it.

According to the site, there are 2 places not far from here that have it. Hopefully they don't sell before I get back next week.

So, is it Idol's favorite game of all time now...? :P

EDIT:
Thanks for the re-reminder about this game, Idol. I checked online earlier on GameStop.com and my local GameStop had it listed as available. Called them to check - yup, they got it. Just went and just picked it up for $9.99. :)

EDIT 2:
Well, I'm running this game on my aging PC on 1024x768 w/ most stuff running on either High and Very High. No performance issues or anything. B/c it feels like a cross b/t Assassin's Creed (Sean can climn and scale any building, pretty much) and GTA games (driving elements) - I've been sticking w/ basically only the 360 gamepad - yes, even for the shooting elements.

So far....after doing the first mission and the 3 months earlier mission(s)...this game is awesome. Hope it keeps it up the entire way.

I'm really enjoying this game. Theres a lot of influence from GTA and Assassins Creed, and a lesser influence from Gears of War (though I guess most 3rd person shooters have cover hugging now). Big open world game, some climbing around, blowing up nazi installations, lots of sneaking around. Its pretty awesome.

Yes, most games do have cover mechanics - since UE3.0 Engine games (Rainbow Six: Vegas series and especially Gears of War series) made it suddenly popular.

Hell, even Alpha Protocol and Mass Effect 2 have a cover system. *shrug*

I'm wondering why reviews for this game were all the place...

I dunno, but it's surely worth the $10 + tax that I paid for it - from what I've played so far. Especially if it stays as awesome as the opening stuff was.

I haven't looked at the reviews past a quick glance, but there are some issues.

People complained about climbing being so easy in Assassins Creed. Just hold the A button and up you go, the character directs himself. Well, the alternative is The Saboteur. You have to press A every time to jump from handhold to handhold. Its just a lot slower and doesn't add anything to the process. It works, but it would have been better if it was more like AC.

I dont know if this is par for these kind of games, but the automapping is kind of funny. You know the line thats drawn on your map so you know how to get where you want to go? Yeah, that. Again, it works it just...doesn't understand the world state. There are nazi checkpoints dividing Paris into 3 zones, and you get travel papers as you play that will let you through these checkpoints without making the nazis want to shoot you. Sometimes the automapper will send you to one of these checkpoints anyway, if you have the right papers or not. So you have to bust out the map and look for a way around it yourself because generally the waypoint is NOT in the restricted zones, you'd just be passing through.

Speaking of the map, I don't think there is a button to quickly bring it up. So you have to pause, choose map from the menu, then hit the "zoom" button to actually have a workable map. They should have made it easier to access.

I've also hit a few bugs. Like a guy in a cutscene runs in backwards. And Ive had the game lock up when I receive a note from someone. But those are fairly rare.

One fun thing I just did was the first race mission. Get a fast car and race through the city. Its hard because theres quite a bit of traffic and pedestrians. Including Nazis, which look down on being run over. And if you hit one of their cars they get pissed. They also don't like it when the automapper forces you to plow through one of those Nazi checkpoints I was talking about. That made the second half the race pretty interesting.

Well, I've been missing out. I had a look at the cars in my garage, and a list of cars I have yet to collect. I notice one of them says it can only be won in a game in the VIP area of the Belle. The strip club. I didn't know there was a VIP area! So I went, and found the "secret" door. I played the game and won the car, woo! Also...burlesque shows. Double woo!

Well...fuck. I think I might have just screwed myself with this game. I wanted to get some tips on doing some of the unlockable perks so I hit a FAQ...and...well...
Quote
2) DO NOT complete any of Dr Kwong's optional missions until you have completed
the "A2.024 - Needs Of The Few... Or The One" mission.  The reason being
once you complete Kwong's first mission he then moves to Chinatown and
remains there even when you have completed his missions.  Towards the end of
the "A2.024 - Needs Of The Few... Or The One" mission when you escape Notre
Dame Kwong will spawn in Chinatown and will be killed by the Germans.  When
he dies you will fail the mission.  Its impossible to save him and so you
will have load to save before you did the first Kwong mission.
I have been doing all of the optional missions before doing the story missions, so this basically screws me over. I guess that particular quest is next so we'll see if I can do it. But if not...ugh, this is going to suck so bad. I don't want to start all over again. I dont have any saves from before I did the Kwong missions.

Where are the modders to fix the problem?  :o

I doubt EA will fix it - the game has yet to be patched.
Plus, Pandemic's (unfortunately) gone now, anyways.

After reading around, it appears some people reported being able to complete the mission. They said the guy spawns on a street corner, so as long as you watch your shooting (its one of those "shoot from the back of a speeding truck as the AI drives" missions), don't cause an enemy car to explode near him, and if the nazis dont shoot him...you can finish the mission.

So I tried it and amazingly made it through in a single go. I never saw the guy, and apparently the Nazis didn't kill him. So...hooray! I can continue the game!

(click to show/hide)

EDIT

Well, good thing I was able to beat that mission since I didn't realize just how close to the end I was. Anyway, I beat the game. Though I'm not done with it yet. I did 100% of the story missions, but only 26% of the "free play" targets. Around the city are all these sniper towers, radar placements, AA guns, etc all usually guarded. My job: blow them up. I have a LOT of them still to do.

Ok, maybe I am done with it. I just spent some time clearing some of the freeplay targets. I looked at how much I cleared, then zoomed out the map to see how many remain. Yeah...thats a lot. Like, way too many. And since theres really no reward for it (on PC, I imagine the console version has achievements and trophies), I dont think Im going to play it another 30 hours just to do them all.

Awesome, D. You're really close to the end. I'll give you a wanring and its not really a spoiler. But pretty much the next story mission is a long chain of events that takes you right to the end credits. So be ready.

So yeah, I uninstalled. I sorta need the room and I didnt really look forward to doing all those little things. It was a pretty great game overall, though. Definitely worth checking out.

Since I did a post about complaints, going to list the things I liked:

Theres a lot of stealth involved but its not annoying like in most other games. If you kill a guard without shooting or blowing him up you can take clothes and sneak around in them. This lets you into restricted areas without instantly raising an alarm when seen, but it has its own drawbacks. Running in uniform draws suspicion. You cant get too close to other Nazis or they will notice you aren't quite right. A little meter fills up and when its full they blow the whistle. But the nice part is getting caught isn't an instant-fail situation. You can still shoot it out, or run away to reset the alarm, and if you're really good you can get away far enough to quickly take down an enemy and get into his clothes, ending the alarm. Sometimes its good to go around snapping peoples necks so you have an easy place to run to grab a disguise.

Now, if you do die or otherwise fail a mission, never fear! A checkpoint is never very far back so retrying is easy. And if you blew up 10 of 20 objectives and then die and have to restart, you don't have to blow up those first 10 again. They stay gone. It makes it so its not such a pain in the ass to play (like GTA where you have to drive all the way back to where the fucking mission is before you can retry it from the beginning)

Boobies.

The Perks are nice. Kind of like achievements where you have to accomplish something and you unlock it, but these actually have in-game effects. From unlocking weapons and cars, to new moves, or even gameplay things like less scope movement, or being able to plant a bomb while in disguise doesn't alert Nazis that can see you.

The weapons dealer. Lots of weapons to buy. But the nice part is once you buy it, its simply unlocked. You can go to the dealer and switch between all your unlocked weapons for free. Then just buy some ammo and off you go. A similar thing with the garages. Once you've "captured" a car, you can go to a garage and request whichever vehicle you want for free.

About the side-missions - oh yes, those are littered like crazy all over the game-world. I probably got like 5% off those done - if that. I've found myself sometimes doing one here or another there, when on my way to say meet-up with a contact to start a mission.

Finished the game earlier today - OMG, what an awesome bleepin' game. Epic as hell and awesome action. It was so worth the $10 - and then some. I think it took me around 15-20 hours or so to finish the main quest. I got around 78% of the missions done, once the main quest was over and stuff.
