How will you be able to see anything on the 0.25" screen?  I so hate netbooks and don't understand the craze at all.

What's up with all these games being released for free?

They're old -- hehe.
Plus, probably trying to generate interest again in NEWER games in the series and upcoming games in the series.

Small, cheap, uber-portable, what's not to understand?

I love that stinking game so hard.  I have one of the later-run super-huge-giant boxes for it.  It's not a CE, but it's standing up with my CEs of Morrowind and Oblivion.

So many groundbreaking things for the industry in that game.  Also, they could get away with things they can't now.  Like certain temples dedicated to Dibella, goddess of beauty, have a bunch of half-naked people in them.

Tiny keyboard, ridiculously small screen, horrible processor...

Dude, people are obsessed with surfing the internet on their MP3 players and cell phones.  Netbooks can't really be considered all that small anymore, as far as internet-capable devices go.

They arent great as a main system, but as a secondary web surfer they are nice. I take mine to the library to download stuff (and play old DOS games). I dont really want or need a larger laptop for that.

I see what you are saying, but I don't really think of them as the same thing.  You don't just whip out and one hand a netbook for a minute.  You have to get it out, open it up, take it out of standby or hibernate...  It's a laptop-like experience with a really small screen.

I have been setting up Eee PCs at work with Windows 7 as loaner laptops for when people are visiting from other offices or need them for conferences or whatever and I curse Asus every damn time I touch one.

What kind do you have, idol?

I don't see what the big deal is.  They're easily portable computers.  It isn't a laptop-like experience.  They're less than half the size of most others, you can toss them into a bag without a second thought, and whip them out whenever you need them.  I really don't see the mystery.  I have no need for one because I'm not an internet-obsessed dude who requires constant access, nor do I really need mobility in a laptop. I just need one for work, and I want decent screen real estate... hence I have a real laptop.  But other people want different stuff.  I also don't want a cell phone, much less an internet-capable MP3 player, yet those are selling like motherfucking hotcakes right now.  *shrug*

Yeah, you can whip them out of a backpack instead of a laptop bag whenever you need one, but after that it is exactly the same as a laptop.  I already went through the rest in my previous post.

I don't get the Internet-capable music player thing either.  I guess the main reason they exist is to provide a portal to purchase music and get it directly to the player, on the go.  It just strikes me as an odd combination overall since they are capable of more than just buying music.

I never really understood the purpose of portable music players ever since cell phones could play MP3s. Most cell phones also had internet (WAP at the time) capability. I just don't carrying too many single-task devices. My current phone (Samsung Omnia) is my phone, media player (music and DivX video), portable internet device, GPS, camera, portable hard drive, and flashlight.

That's something I can't understand.  I'd much rather have separate items that do a proper job of things rather than trying to shoehorn a bunch of stuff onto a single device.  But then, I fucking hate cell phones, so where most people are used to them, I find them unintuitive.

Also, wowee are we off topic.

So, how 'bout them elder scrolls?  They're pretty old, yeah?

Most of the cell phones I had were really crappy media players.  I have a Motorola Q9m, which is supposed to be some version that's especially enhanced to be a media player and I think it sucks.

I'm still very attached to my 2nd generation iPod Nano.

I've got an Eee 900a. It was cheap enough for me to just splurge and pick it up. I wish I had gotten one with a larger internal hard drive...4GB doesn't leave you with much to play with after the OS is installed. And I read the SSDs they used in this model are kinda crap. But it does what I need it to do, so thats not that big of a problem.

The ones I deal with are Eee 1000HA.  I think it's kind of weird they are XP only.  Windows 7 works fine on them, but you have to find some of the drivers on your own.  I haven't tried Vista, but maybe they don't support Vista because it's a bit of a resource hog.  7 isn't as bad in that regard.

I've ready that most current SSDs are crap.  Supposedly there is one certain one you need to look for, but I couldn't tell you what that is because I think the technology still has some maturing to do.

Speaking of iPod Nano's, Sandy has 2 unopened ones, and just gave me one of them, along with a set of Bose earphones.  So while I would never buy one, looks like I need to learn to use one.  I assume I'm going to need iTunes now?  *Shudder*

I have 2 problems with using my cell phone as a media player, other than the interface not being all that great:  It depletes and wears out the battery, and I need to use proprietary earbuds.  The plug is completely nonstandard.

You don't have to use iTunes to transfer music to the iPod. It seems like most media players can do it (Winamp, Foobar, I think Songbird). Only reason to use iTunes would be if you were buying from that store.

I use iTunes.  While I don't like it overall, I do like the fact that I can set it up to only synchronize songs I put a check mark on.

Plus, if I hear a song I'd rather not have on my iPod for whatever reason, I 1-star it.  Then next time I synchronize with iTunes I sort by 1-stars, uncheck them, and then synchronize again.

You might be able to do this with other software by now but last time I checked, Winamp was basically standard drag-and-drop.

Wo0t! Sure are!

I can boot up Arena and Daggerfall fine under DOSBOX -- but yeah, that's as far as I gotten w/ both of 'em; hehe.

I just really ain't lookin' to go that far back old school right about now...

I been playing Witcher a bit, since patch 1.5 dropped.

The only feature that's less than its standalone counterpart is the camera. It's a decent 5MP cam but obviously a dedicated camera will do a better and faster job. Other than that it handles everything else equal to or better than individual devices, of course I'm coming from the angle of "I don't care about iPods, Zunes, or Zens." My phone has 16GB on it, it's made with media in mind. Its stock firmware comes with the most basic tools for the job, but best results come when you get creative and resourceful with 3rd-party software. Fortunately someone has figured out how to cook up custom firmware for the Omnia and I've been going by it since.

Haha seriously! Bringing things back to TES... I remember reading about Daggerfall but it didn't catch my interest until after I played Morrowind.

I just fetched DOSBox and I'm looking forward to checking out Daggerfall.

Be warned: it's wonky as hell.  Don't expect anything about the experience to be smooth.  But if you stick with it, there's a lot of fun to be had under the somewhat dingy surface.

Basically, yeah -- took me an hour to DL Daggerfall.
I has nothing better to do and wasn't doing much of anything at the time 'cept posting, so I let the DL go.

RPS -> Article on Daggerfall for Modern OS's.

Basically, as we know, Daggerfall is FREE from BethSoft to download here.
But, this article goes MUCH further...w/ modding and whatnot.
To sum up what's there...

Daggerfall - Mod Site
Go here for a full download of Daggerfall: CompUSA Special Edition w/ settings all set for you in DosBox set-up for Modern OS's.
The download also contains w/ it all kinds of optional extra tweaks, mods, quests packs, fix packs, and other stuff in there that you can select to tell it to install on set-up, if you like.

XL Engine for Daggerfall
XL Engine.
This engine is being worked on and is still in Beta.
It is to run certain old games on modern Windows OS's - Win XP, Win Vista, and Win 7.
There's DaggerXL version for Daggerfall currently.

SIDE NOTES:
Also, there's DarkXL for Dark Forces for download currently.
Eventually, he'll released OutlawsXL for Outlaws and BloodXL for Blood.
Eventually, when he's done w/ it all, he'll merge all four together for one big pack.
