Dante's Inferno is NOT coming to the PC
« on: Tuesday, July 21, 2009, 01:57:53 PM »
Right now, there's no plans to bring EA's upcoming Dante's Inferno to the PC.
Currently, only planned for X360 and PS3.

Electronic Arts revealed via Big Download that the upcoming action game Dante's Inferno is not going to arrive for the PC.

"When Dante's Inferno was originally announced in December, we attached no platforms to the project. When we came out with a first look for press in February we announced 360/PS3 and then in April we announced PSP. We never announced a PC SKU nor are there plans for any," says the report.

Double crap!

Never heard of it and it's an EA game, so... who cares.

He only posted it because he doesn't own any consoles, so any news where obvious console exclusives are announced D will post it so we can fill the boards with more redundant rage.

Haha that's like announcing "The new BMW M5 will NOT be submersible"

I never even considered it on PC. It's a God of War style game (platform/beat'em-up?), perfect for consoles. I still think it's weird that DMC4 was released on PC! Granted PCs are felixble, just plug in a gamepad and it's essentially the same experience (assuming your system meets the game's reqs).

I still don't understand what the game is even trying to do.  I'd heard it was actually trying to have something to do with the literature, which sort of irritates me.

Yeah, the trailers I've see so far leave a lot to be desired.

Speaking of games of the genre, Nier looks interesting. However, the one I am anticipating the most is Castlevania.

Oh come on now.  D posts any news about games that he comes across and thinks is somewhat interesting; PC releases or the lack of them included. He's also the least likely on these boards to ever post anything even close to redundant rage. Redundant is one thing, but rage?  Seriously?

Or when something really pisses me off.

The demo is out on PSN (I assume it's out on XBL as well but I didn't check).  I looked at a video of the demo and the gameplay looks exactly like God of War.

I tried the demo out tonight and it's okay. Not bad, but not great. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that nothing really great happens as the demo cuts out right as you enter hell and that's where all the good stuff should be. Some of the setup seem a bit clumsy though and what should be big events sort of happen haphazardly.

The game is a complete God of War clone in almost every respect. What's kinda funny though is that technically, Dante does not look much better than the HD versions of GoW (which I literally just finished last weekend). Again, I imagine that has to do with the fact that you don't really get to see Hell where all the crazy stuff should be that'll probably push the engine in ways that you don't see in a more normal settings. Still, that either speaks volumes about how impressive GoW looks or how unimpressive Dante is. My opinion is somewhere in between those two.

The demo really hasn't changed my outlook on the game for better or worse. I'm not expecting amazing things from it, but I'm still looking forward to it. Mostly, I just want to see how they pull together hell. If the game is serviceable as a God of War clone that's good enough for me.

That is exactly why I'm looking forward to it. Plus the fact that the setting appeals to me more. Though God of War does manage to make setting interesting, despite the fact that it's always bored me in other games and movies.

Oh, and it's from Visceral Games. Probably not the same team as Dead Space, since I guess they've been working on Dead Space 2, and maybe Extraction.

I played the demo and loved it. The deluxe version comes with a bunch of stuff if you preorder, like a figurine of Dante, the soundtrack, a digital copy of Dante's Inferno, and a digital copy of something by Wayne Barlowe which is completely awesome.  I don't know if it's a digital copy of Barlowe's Inferno (which I already own) or not but a lot of the characters and design looks like some of the stuff from the book and I wouldn't doubt the design team used his books as inspiration.  I am all over this.

God damn it.  Why did you have to tell me Barlowe was involved?  I own Barlowe's Inferno, Brushfire, God's Demon, and even The Alien Life of Wayne Barlowe.  That guy is awesome.

I was so ready to not care about the game.  I mean, I like the look of it quite a bit, I just find the underlying theme sort of stupid.  Nobody should ever have based a game on this.  But... damn it.  It looks like it could at least be kinda' fun...

Nobody should ever have based a game on this.

You know, I kind of thought the same thing when I first heard this game was being developed and while they are loosely basing the game off of Inferno from what I saw, they are doing it in kind of a cool way and there was a couple of moments when Dante was narrating and using dialogue straight from Inferno.  You should just play the demo.

Also, it seems Barlowe is doing the character design as shown in this article, so it might be an a book just dedicated to the art he did for the game that comes with the deluxe edition of the game.

Downloaded and played through the demo the other day.  Definitely not dropping any coin on this before I buy God of War 3, but I had a good time with it.  Blatant ripoff of God of War though, I mean this has to be lawsuit territory.

I was watching a gameplay and level design Q&A the other day. They said they knew wht they wanted right from the beginning, knew what all it had to have, so it was easy to just jump right into the development cycle. I swear I thought they were gonna actually say "it basically just had to be like God of War, but in Hell." I'm not sure why I've only heard the public complain about this and not the media or even from Sony.

I'm fine with it though, because I don't have a PS3 so I can't play God of War 3. (and Bayonetta and DMC don't appeal to me)

They are going all fucking out with the marketing on this game. I'm watching another live Q&A and they're talking about it all. Let me see what I can remember:

-Animated feature done by 6 different studios (Animatrix style)
-feature film
-comic book
-action figure
-life sized scythe from a weapons creation company (same guys that made the life sizes Frostmourne from WoW)
-letter opener sized scythe
-7" action figure of Dante (this is the Gamestop preorder bonus as well)
-re-release of the Dante's Inferno poem with game branding
-clothing line

7.5 from IGN

I have a feeling that some of those nitpicks they made about the game not being unique are probably going to be universal with most other reviewers, especially the God of War comparisons.  I really don't get what they were expecting, especially after the demo. It still looks like a fun game even if it is borrowing heavily from the God of War series in terms of gameplay and I'm looking forward to playing it when my pre-order comes in on the 9th.

Exactly. I haven't read the IGN review yet, but I've seen nothing to make me want to cancel my preorder. The more offensive it is the better, because that seems to be one of the game's strong points. I mean, it's hell. It should be offensive.

Gamepro gives it 4 out 5 stars. They liked it, the gameplay and combat feels really tight and really enjoyable. Set design is great but supposedly the narrative is a bit lacking, just feels empty. It's coming from a reviewer who isn't familiar with the poem. I'm still a little curious actually, though I keep jumping back and forth on the fence about it. The quicklook Giantbomb got me more interested.

Gamespot gives it a 6.5

They say the game starts out great, but the last third of the game is absolutely terrible.  Apparently, they made the last third like the challenge mode of God of War (which was a separate game mode altogether) and you have to pass it with certain conditions (like all air kills or no magic kills or something like that).  That makes it incredibly tedious as it's necessary to clear it to complete the game and story.  As a result, it looks like this game has a good beginning, but it starts to fall apart after that.

They also mention that the setting starts out great, with grotesque imagery but it starts to become a monotonous setting as you get farther in.  Epic scale at the start turns into a small room by room encounter by the end.

I just watched the video review from Gamespot, and it actually made me want the game more. I get what he's saying about the later sections, but the combat in the demo was fun enough, and the visuals seem offensive and shocking enough, that I really want to play it. Also I don't own a PS2 or PS3, so I've only played an hour or two of the first God of War game. Dante's Inferno (hopefully) gives a taste of that type of combat without the purchase of a new console.

Well, I just finished the game and I have to say the some of the reviewers were being way too harsh on this game.  If I had to place a score on it, it should get an 8 out of 10.  Some of the criticisms in the reviews, like the end sections of the game, specifically the challenges in the Malebolge area are valid complaints that do take away from the game a little bit, but not enough to warrant the reviews it has been getting.  Also, the challenges are not as hard and tedious as they make them out to be, I had to retry only two of them a couple of times.  The complaint from one of the reviewers (can't remember if it was IGN or Gamespot) about the levels being bland and repetitive after a certain point is completely false.  There is a ton of variety in the different levels to avoid feeling repetitive and the level design is one of the most kick ass parts of the game along with the enemy design.  I think my main complaint with the game is that it was a little too short for my liking and I clocked in around 10 hours, but they set it up for a sequel which looks like it will be interesting.  I can definitely see myself doing one more playthrough of this again.

I've enjoyed what I've played so far. I'm up to Gluttony, the part where you do the weird MC Escher like door puzzle. Then my power went out. For 16 hours. Ugh.

Oh, and here's a very EA move. There are now "Soul Packs" in 4 varieties available on Xbox Live:

Free Soul Pack: 500 souls
$1 Soul Pack: 1500 souls
$3 Soul Pack: 3000 souls
$5 soul pack: 5000 souls

3000 souls is about what it takes to buy most of the combos and upgrades, except the early ones with are like 1500 souls. So if you want to buff up your character early, just pay EA for it. I guess I do get 500 souls free though. I wonder if that works for every time I start a new game. At least it's not something you'll feel like you're missing out on by not buying it, like an extra level or something.
