This is a "fairytale" by Hans Christian Anderson, that I read a lot as a child, and found extremely depressing. I am sure most of you have read it, but I'd like to share anyway. It is half a page long, so you should be done in minutes:

I always liked this story.  Why is it depressing?  I always found it uplifting, how the struggle with the brief, transient nature of human ambition is eventually rewarded.
