Who wants the SexBox?

A console for AO games

Stupid name, they need to come up with something better.

The article starts off explaining what it is and who these dudes are, thats cool. it'll be a kind of set top box that will offer mature games and videos and a bunch of other stuff. But then we have this:

Quote
It's hard to imagine a market for an only Adults Only console, as there really aren't many games with that rating in the U.S.. Most developers that receive an Adults Only rating for their games tone down their content -- as was the case with Manhunt 2 and The Punisher -- so that retailers won't refuse to put the releases on their shelves.

As far as I know, the only released console game with an Adults Only rating is Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas due to its Hot Coffee minigame, and Rockstar eventually re-released an M-rated version (and a "Cold Coffee" PC patch) for that, too.
I think this missing the point entirely. There might be a market for those AO games, its just everyone is scared shitless by them. Retailers don't want to sell them and console makers don't want them on their systems for fear they will ruin their image. Thats why developers shy away from that rating, why they edit down their game.

But what if you had a console where none of that mattered? Where you could create that AO rated game and still get it published? Thats what this thing is trying to provide. The only hard part will be retailers. You wont find this or its games at Wal Mart. But with digital distribution thats less of an obstacle. You can market and sell directly to your customers. Its the same idea that Rockstar is using to sell AO rated Manhunt 2 on PC.

Its sort of a "if you build it, they will come" situation.

Yeah, that's just stupid.  And who's going the fuck is going to try and buy that and convince their wife that it isn't just for porn?  Sorry, that would never work.

I don't see how that would get around any of the negatives you mentioned.  Developers would still be afraid to have their image tarnished, so they wouldn't release spicier versions of GTA IV, or other big games.  Retailers wouldn't stock them (as you mentioned).  It would be hard to get the console into homes (as Que mentioned).  And the quality of what you would get would be no better than the ridiculously poor adult "RPGs" for PCs.  This has no chance in hell.

Oh yeah, I dont see this doing particularly well or anything. I just thought he wasnt entirely honest with why we don't have more AO games. Theres really no place for them to be.

Which makes AO useless, since most companies that get AO, they wind-up cutting the game back enuff to get them the M rating -- which will allow the game to be sold in major retailers on disc at Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target, etc.

Yeah, I don't see Wal-Mart would likely stock a SexBox on their shelves -- or most retailers even, either.

Only place that really has a chance for AO games is the PC -- even then, do you really think the major digital distribution places i.e. Steam, Impulse, Metaboli, or Gamersgate would really let AO games be sold on their site to download? I don't.

Well the nice part there is someone could come up with an online store that did sell AO games. Just because Wal Mart doesnt sell Playboy doesn't stop the gas station up the street from doing so.

I'm only interested on seeing where this goes because AO games are such a rarity. I've never looked into it. How popular are they? Where are they sold? I'm assuming the majority of them are on PC and in Japan, but maybe thats not true. What sort of plan do they have here? Sell the box itself and its games entirely over the internet? I guess if they had physical copies that porn shops could carry them.

And is this AO stuff going to be mostly porn games? Thats sadly what the rating seems to be used for, but theres a lot more to stuff being for adults than having sex involved. Though I guess M rated games are basically for adults already and can tackle that stuff, so the AO rating is kind of mislabeled. Should be P for Pornographic.

Sorry...rambling.

I'd be nice to see AO taken more seriously, if you ask me -- than being some sort of Kiss Of Death like the NC-17 rating is for movies.

I have no idea, as well -- a lot of good questions there.

I'd assume if anyone would sell AO rated games, porn shops would sell AO Rated games -- but, do they even have a section dedicated to AO rated PC games? Anyone got an answer to that question? I sure as hell don't know.

Singles: Flirt Up Your Life was released in its AO glory -- if you wanna call it that -- via download from Eidos. I don't think its sequel Singles: Triple Trouble got a USA release, BTW.

I think AO is useless, myself.

Well, Manhunt 2 in its full violent glory would be AO -- now, if we can get a company with the balls to publish it as such and a retailer to also do so, we'd be getting somewhere.

I think AO and M are a silly rating, when it comes to the age factor. Look at the set-up -- EC is 3; E is 6; E10+ is 10; T is 13. Then suddenly, we have M is 17 and AO is 18. That's really not much difference in age, if you ask me. One's supposed to be just more graphic than the other, basically -- whether it's sex or violence; it shouldn't matter. But, as we know, it's easier (here in the States) to get a AO b/c of graphic sexual content than a AO for very graphic violence. See a game like Singles getting AO, yet the violent-as-hell Dead Space winds up M. Am I missing something?

My next question -- why isn't there a rating designated for say 21+? We have all these games -- T for 13; M for 17; why such a short gap (18) for AO? Shouldn't AO be 21+? Or maybe M should be re-rated back to 16 and AO to 18 to make the gap not one year? I dunno.

I'm rambling too, now...

I don't know if any restriction above 18 would fly in the US. At 18 the only legal restriction on your entertainment misadventures is alchohol. You can smoke, you can drive, you can buy porn, you can consent to sex with an adult, and you can watch any rating of movie. If suddenly there were a video game rating that said you had to be 21, people would bitch. As of now the 17-18 range requirement for M games falls in line with age restrictions on most other things in the US.

The name SexBox just shows that this can't be that serious of an endeavor. It reminds me of porno names like Whores of the Ring, Edward Penishands, World of Whorecraft, etc. If they want to be taken seriously (at least in my eyes), they would come up with an original name. Not to mention I wouldnt' buy a console for porn games, but I would like to play overly violent games. Unfortunately this thing would get flooded with just porn stuff and I wouldn't buy.

What needs to happen to allow AO games a more mainstream acceptance is for a retailer to support them. Manhunt could have been released unedited on the PC, Xbox and PS2 (I think), but Walmart wouldn't carry it, and Gamestop would either not put it on shelves, or just not carry it. If there were a retailer that would support them, these games would get at least some shelf visibility. I mean if George Romero can release his Dead movies as unrated (Dawn and Day were, not sure about Night) and them still see the light of day somehow, game developers should be able to do the same.

If you take the game out right before you finish you don't need protection.

Linear, open-ended, free-roaming -- whatever is whatever, as long as it's good or better.

If Overwritten.net disappears from the internet tomorrow because I decide to finally end it, you can blame this thread.

There is literally nothing I could post to make this thread any worse. I could post a video of Dick Cheney masturbating to burning kittens* and it would improve.
