Dont buy Jedi Knight Collection from Steam.
« on: Thursday, September 17, 2009, 01:05:03 PM »
Pathetic.
Quote
    *  1. Dark Forces - Runs fine on most systems since it's using DosBox. Some users reporting framerate problems due to frame limiter. Most are running fine.
    * 2. Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight - Range of problems from artifacting, to black screen with just a HUD, to being completely unplayable. Even if you can get it working, there will be no music since the original game had CD music and LucasArts hasn't changed anything to allow it to find the music anywhere but from the original game CD in your disc drive.
    * 3. Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith - Same engine as above, same problems
    * 4. Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast - Fairly recent game, will run well on most systems
    * 5. Jedi Academy - Same as Jedi Outcast
Why sell games that are broken on new systems? This is why GoG should be in charge of old game releases. They make sure they work.

I'd love to see JK Collection join GOG.

LucasArts is more or less another Valve for me.  Everyone loves them but they really piss me off.

This isn't the first time they've done this with the series either. When Jedi Outcast was released, the collectors edition came with the disc from the first games... with no changes at all the make them run on modern systems (and they were having problems back then). Back then it was a bit of a bonus to just get the disk, so it was sort of excusable. Not surprising really, but sad. LA finally realized they had lot of nostalgia for their past, but rather than harnessing that in a good way with what would be a dedicated audience they decided to milk it like Star Wars. More and more the talk of them going back to their old great games sounds like a bad idea.

Yeah.  I didn't mind it much with the Jedi Outcast CE because I had enough know-how to get it going without much trouble back then.

Oh well.  At least I still have all the stuff and don't need to buy it again anyway.

Did the mod community do anything to keep the gaming going w/ unofficial patches to get it running better?

I have no problem w/ resurrecting old games and making sequels to these games, if they so chose.

My problem is the very lazy and half-assed job it sounds like they been doing w/ these re-releases of late.

LA should've just put all the master copies of these classics in GOG's hands and let them deal w/ getting the technical side down for these old games so they ran right on modern systems -- and them let GOG sell the game over their site.

With the trend of rereleasing 'classics' and old games, it's a step in the wrong direction to rerelease them without making them work on modern system.

Heh, I still have the original Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight game CD.  If I recall, I didn't enjoy the game too much.  Jedi Knight 2 and Jedi Academy were fun though.

hahah you know it was because of that game that I thought pyro was black for about three years.

Whenever Pyro would come on, for some reason, on my screen he'd appear as Lando Calrissian. Now, I know someone selecting Lando all the time doesn't increase the probability of them being black, but for some reason I always started picturing Pyro as some black dude.

With all the complaining going on, I hope LA patches these silly technical and lack-of-music issues out of the series.
I'd really like to add the Jedi Knight collection to my game collection...
