Eid...

Just read the article first...

OK...

Quote
The night before Eid, entire communities gather on rooftops, scanning the sky with giddy anticipation.

Never seen that happen... ever. People at best wait by their TV sets for any news of the new lunar month.

Quote
"It only needs one sighting of the moon in the whole country, and the whole nation erupts in cheers," said Qazi Arif, 35, of Sirajgong, Bangladesh. "It's a divine feeling, hard to describe."

Yes people are very pleased when Eid starts, but I am not sure about a collective nationwide orgasm. I have seen more excitement in Saudi Arabia at the winning of a soccer match than an Eid announcement. :P People are pretty happy on Eid day though, no doubt.

The rest of it is pretty accurate though.

The Eid is one of two major holidays in Islam

Can you say The Eid? It sounds strange to me. Like The Christmas.

It does sound weird.. Although I think technically it's ok since in Arabic we refer to it as "The Celebration," since the word "Eid" literally translates to celebration or festivity.

It's kind of weird to call this one "The Eid" coz the two major celebrations are both "Eid" this is "Eid Al Fitr" (Celebration of the Feast) which celebrates the end of the holy month of Ramadan, it's a 3-day celebration. The second one (which is the big one) is "Eid Al Adha" (Celebration of the Sacrifice) is a 5-day celebration which comemorates Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his first-born son, Ismail. This celebration also includes "The Day of Arafa" which is the day that Islam, as a religion, was complete with the final verse of the Qur'an.

Does it center around a jolly fat man that hands out free gifts produced from the slave labor of little people? If not, you are missing out.

Hmm.. I suppose it could. Technically, that can be arranged. The gifts would have to be food though, or at least an edible material.
